Title: Compatible clear poly overcoat finish?
Post by: Anti-Wheelz on February 12, 2010, 03:54:00 PM
building a set of woodies with bohning sealer, white crown, and bohning cresing paints.  last set i made, some of the cresting paint ran when i used supercoat over the cresting.  i want to try a water poly as a finish coat.  anybody use this with all fletch-lac products underneath?  also, even with poly over the bohning products, do i still need to use fletch-tite, or can i use duco.  please let me know which brands have worked for you, i dont want to "blemish anymore of these nice shafts.  thanks guys. any info will be much appreciated.

Water born finishes usually do not bond well with solvent based finishes unless there is a transition coat of shellac. Everything sticks to shellac and it is often used between an oil or solvent finish that then gets a waterborn or vs versa.
However, waterborn finishes are constantly improving and I'd try it on a couple of unimportant shafts, just to see how it bonds/holds up.

i guess it doesnt have to be a water poly.  i just like how they are low odor.  what else works well with the Bohning products as a final coat. the fletch-lac seems as tough as nails until i shot a 3D target and it stipped the shaft almost bare.

Pro Fin from Daly's.

Pro Fin is a petroleum based urethane.  is that compatible with Fletch-Lac?  i have used that with wispering winds paint without any issues...

If I am not mistaken, it is possible to use oil-based on top of waterbased, but not the other way around or it will "boil"

well, i decided to go with the Pro Fin.  absolutely the best penetrating "dippable" sealer i have used.  I tried putting a white crown of Bohning on after 2 coats (steel wool between each)  but, i ended up with a few bubbles right at the nock end on a couple test shafts.  any thoughts on why?  anyone know what would work better as a crown?  or do i need another coat of Pro Fin before dipping white?

Bohning is a good product, but a unique vinyl lacquer.  It is pretty much compatible only with its own stuff.

what do recommend instead?  also, i have never had any problems with Bohning when using all of their products together.  it just doesnt seem to hold up to burn from the 3D targets well.

Try oil stain, testors paint, and water polyurethane finish, duco cement on feathers and nock, hot melt on point. Been using this combination for many years.

sticking with pro fin... just need a white paint suitable for crown dipping.  thank you anyway John.  that is a good combo.

Oil base Krylon.  You'll likely need to thin it some; use mineral spirits.

I use Testors paint and water base floor poly and it works.

I've been recently doing as John describes after having used Bohning for the last few years. The oil stain, testers crest, poly finish seems to be working good however I've only used it for the last few months.

i have done that too(except acrylic cresting).  i really like the pro fin hopefully i can get the krylon to the consistency i would prefer for dipping.
