Usually measured with a fist with the thumb extended.  About 7" normally.

I think it came from fist nail. Seems like I heard that somewhere.

My bow was noisy and by changing the bracemele to a higher fistheight it got real quiet.

It's a Saxon term, meaning a clenched hand with the thumb extended.  Actually, for the average guy, it's a little over 6"....for a big guy like Wingnut, it's closer 7".    ;)

Most longbows...D bows anyway...can get by with a fistmele.  The reason it's not used anymore is that brace height makes more sense with hybrids and recurves....and confound devices.  Brace doesn't signify a particular distance, but a varied number depending on the style of bow, and the makers suggestion of proper string height.

George, I have to disagree   ;)

It's really an ancient Flemish term for
those who hitchhiked back and forth to various
skirmishes between the English & French, during the
Hundred Years' War. They stuck their hand out
with outstretched thumb, just
like we do today, and hitched rides
with baggage trains and sumpter animals.
