Title: Eating Frogs
Post by: Cyclic-Rivers on February 08, 2010, 07:47:00 PM
I was thinking about shooting frogs this summer.  Do they have the same health advisories as fish?

Any help would be appreciated!!

If your talking about mercury warnings those are for fish bigger than 12" because it takes a few years for them to get that big. They can absorb alot of mercury over the course of several years. Frogs generally aren't that long winded. On the flip side of that coin you would have to eat fish every day for every meal before you would get enough mercury to cause you any issues. Even if you were eating all large fish.

Theyre alot of fun to shoot and theyre pretty tasty too.I dont think you have to worry too much about health advisories as long as you dont kill 10 lbs of em.Ill take you to my club pond one day this summer for some froggin.

If you are worried about mercury toxicity (pregnant women, children, etc.), yes it does accumulate in frogs.  i would think you would have to eat a bunch though!  Do a google search and then decide for yourself.

If Im not mistaken, the DEC has advisories listed in the fishing regulations for fish, shellfish, and frogs.

Oddly enough, they have lifted the limit here in Washington due to their overpopulation, destruction of native frogs, and the fact few folks hunt them.

If eating them causes health problems, I know a candidate for the "poster child".

Ok this has me pumped!  Cant wait to get a mess of frogs for dinner.

Izzy that sounds pretty darn good to me.  There must be a lot of ponds around here with frogs bountiful.

Not to change the thread what do you use, Judos?

I see an AMS retriever reel in your pic Glenn.  Is that the norm or do people just fling woodies?

Jamie, I think I will take a look at the DEC site.

Am I sick for thinking about frogs in the middle of rabbit season?     :p

The AMS reel is for the frogs.  We use Judos the Kondor with the very large springs.  A direct hit and you pin them to the ground, but if you nick them they jump in the water.  When there hit like that they usually swim on top of the water, that's where the AMS come into play.  Just shoot and reel them in.

We flew into Utapao, Thailand for three days.  One night I ordered Frog Legs Djakarta style.  I didn't know you could get that much curry on anything.  Couldn't taste the meat at all.  Too bad since they were really big.

I really enjoy frog legs, taken with either a fly rod with some red yarn wrapped wround a hook or by spear. I'll need to check the rules again but I don't think it is legal to shoot frogs here in Mich with the bow and arrow.
Title: Re: Eating Frogs
Post by: DennyK on February 09, 2010, 06:19:00 PM
Nope-can't be harvested with bow and arrow here in Mich.

I've heard people using spears to get frogs.

Chris,  I'll certainly take you up on that offer.  That video of you is funny.  Nice frog though.

I have an AMS retreiver.  Is 70# test enough?   :biglaugh:

I think I'll find ponds that I can stalk them.

Rrrrrrrribetttttt

The best way i have ever had them them was at Cloverdale in '08.  It was at "Ferrets Camp" and i believe Otto's brother was cookin them.  He dipped them in funnel cake batter and fried them up. They were unreal.

if anyone was at mojam in '02 they might remember us getting 40-50 one day out of the creek bed.  We never had anymore luck in later years. We must of wiped them all out!

Here in michigan you can't shoot them, or spear them at nite. you can hunt them at nite with a pole and fly or have some real fun shining them from a canoe then grabing them. It takes two people and some care but it is a blast.

When we were kids we hunted them with the skinny yellow wiffle ball bats. Usually had a big ball of tape on the smashin' end too!   :)

you got that right!

I did however come up with a system to make it quicker, but it still takes forever.

nice bucket lid there. I bet that beats cuttin a X in the lid. We cleaned about 100 in  15 minuter with pliers and a pair of tin snips.

I guess if I ever get proficient I will have to devise a method for cleaning. I may only have appetizers for a while.

Charlie we use to eat frogs many years ago and got them by gigging for them. But shooting with the bow is a good practice. Then just peel them, bread them and fry, can use a batter and deep fry them also. Very tasty. Going to have to wait a few more days untill they wake up over there.

Just finished a new book about Bow Spiking (like a gig on an arrow) fish and frogs in the Missouri Ozarks. I have shot lots of fish over the years but no frogs. Going to try it now.

Frog was maybe my first trad kill, as a kid in Tennessee. We would wade in the water at night, look towards the bank with a flashlight, and shoot at their glowing eyes. We took turns on the bow and the flashlight. Carried them in a burlap sack.
Now, I think of all the cottonmouths in those ponds that we waded around in!
