Title: Target Help!!
Post by: Bonecracker on February 05, 2010, 10:50:00 AM
Ok guys, I can shoot around 35yds max in my back yard but have one very big problem! At one end of my yead is a big concrete wall that likes to eat my arrows! It is really the only way I can shoot and I have one Block and two Morrell's. Any suggestions on what to put up to stop the occasional destruction of my carbon arrows.  And please be nice!!  :knothead:   I hate it when one of my arrows glances of the target and hits the wall. I just cringe!  :banghead:

Find some old truck mud flaps and put them up on the wall. I have friends that do this and it works great for them.

Build a 2x4 wooden frame(to what ever size back stop you think you might need.Place it about 5 feet or so  in front of the wall behined your target.Go to a local carpet store and get a used piece of carpet(preferably foam backed) but any will do.Attach it to the top of the frame and leave it hang loose. It will last a long time.

I did like some,I made a frame and hung a piece of old carpet to make a target catch, when the carpet is hanging it will absorb the hit.

I built a frame around my target thats a lot bigger than the target.

Took some left over carpet and put it around the frame and it works great.

Very easy way to do it and it only took me a couple of hours to build and if i can do it anyone can.

The cost was around $20.00.

I must be doing it wrong.  Carpet won't stop my arrows -- even using blunts.  I've been reading where everyone does that so I hung some up in my basement to make an indoor range.  First shot (with a judo) went through both pieces of carpet and hit the wall behind.

Went to cartridge case blunts on flu-flu's.  It will go through the first pice of carpet and makes a dent in the second.

Carpet is hanging from the ceiling using bungee cords to help absorb even more of the shock.

Put several layers if you want it to stop a field point.

Marvin

I'm afraid to try field points on it.

doubled carpet over a 'goal post' is a good back stop.

my practice 'butt' of choice is a doubled over piece of heavy rug laid over a two stakes that stick up about 15" from ground level and about 12" apart.  small mound of dirt behind is the backstop.  i do all of my backyard shooting with judos, right into that rug from 10 to 35 yards.  sometimes i even hit it.  :D

1 4x8 sheet of 3/8 cdx plywood, about $15. I use a brass hammer to bang out the stuck arrows.

This may be the best solution if you don't mind the price:  http://www.bupsports.com/

Marvin M. there must be something wrong with your bow--shooting blunts thru two pieces of carpet--it seems that it may be imparting too much kinetec energy into your arrows--in the interest of safety and the well being of everyone in your household you should send that bow to me and that should take care of your problem  :)

I'm with you.  Carpet does nothing for me but rip my feathers off as the arrows go zipping through.

Rick,

See GingivitisKahn's comments.  I'm not the only one.  That bow shoots good, but I don't thinkt it's excessive.  I've given up on a basement range.  I've got a bag target that I shoot into some, but there's too much risk of damaging something important down there.  Two pieces will stop it, but I make a hole in the first layer every time I shoot and damage the second layer.  Sooner or later, I'll send one out the back into something important.

It's not "cheap" carpet, but probably not the best in the world either.

If you're going to use carpet, test it first to make sure it will stop your arrows.
