Title: Late season Doe Very little blood trail
Post by: Mike Gerardi on February 04, 2010, 05:58:00 AM
I had a nice doe come in last night at 20 yds. After the shot I was suprised there was no blood on the ground. I was useing a two blade head.

That was because I shut her heart down.

We've had that happen with a couple of elk.  I think if you hit the heart right, it stops and blood flow is only gravity.

Congrats on the doe!!

Mike

My son shot a doe the first day of archery through the chest and hardly any blood. It was because of the fat the deer had from eating acorns and corn. I never saw deer that were so fat as this year because of the unusual acorn crop.

When they drop over dead within 30 yards you don't need a blood trail!

I gotta say I enjoyed taking my turn being the guy just standing there telling you how wrong your field dressing technique is and how you should watch you don't cut yourself...

How's the finger?   ;)    :archer:

Congrats on the kill & fine shot placement...

There's just no rhyme or reason to how much of a blood trail you get.  I shot a doe a couple years ago exactly as you did your's with a 2 blade Magnus which went 50 yards before going down and the blood trail was enough to give a coroner the dry heaves.  Last year in December I filled an extra tag with the same broadhead placed right over the heart, and the deer was down in 20 yards with a blood trail a rookie could have followed.  In November I bumped of a 136 & change 5 point with a 3 blade replacable blade that passed through about dead center of the lungs which made it 70 or so yards and hardly left a blood trail at all...

Point being, I don't think it matters a bit if you are using a 2, 3, or 4 blade broadhead, as far as the blood trail goes...

I've heart shot a 10 pointer and a cow moose. There was not a blood trail for either of them but it wasn't necessary as both went down in sight. If you shoot thru the heart you essentially stop blood from pumping because the heart stops working and there is a loss of blood pressure. My animals were shot with 3 and four blade heads so the number of blades seems to not matter.

Nice going, Mike.  Way to seal the deal before the end of the late season.  Soon time for you to get after the rabbits.  Nice shooting.

Thank you all for your much appreciated congrats.  After the shot she did not go 30yds, stopped and fell over. Total pass through. Very happy to have her. I agree it does not matter the broad head used as long as you hit your spot. I change from three blade snuffers to Grizz 190's.

Curt! You have no idea how bad I wanted to get a deer with Ms.Hope. However I was just happy to have the chance to hunt with her.

Frank. Are you going to get out for bunnies?

Tim. Finger was still attached last time I looked!

Just wanted to share my pics with like minded folks who appreciate trad hunting as much as I do.

Pat, Hogs & turkeys baby!

The last deer I center punched the heart on went 250 yards with a marginal but maintainable blood trail.  That was with a Razorcap.  The arrow stayed in that deer and didn't break off, I think it spooked it much more than a pass through would have, leading to an adrenalin surge and a 250 yard dash.

Amazing animals, I wouldn't have made it two steps.

Great shot.

I think we forget how good a job the layers in an animals chest muscles, etc. do in closing a hole once the animal moves from the position it was first hit.

Excellent K9! Just goes to show. Definitely agree, BH's must be razor sharp regardless. Last heartshot painted both sides of the woods. Helen Keller could have found it.
