Post by: crack a toa on February 03, 2010, 10:27:00 PM
how many guys use the factory bevel ? and do you find it good or is it worth changing the bevel to 25 degrees? this is for deer purposes.

I do not use the factory bevel but make it flatter (more acute)...yes, I change it to 25 degrees or maybe even a little less.  The hardness of the Grizzly (R54?) can handle the more acute angle IMO.  I  have never had an edge roll and have been using them for over ten years, at least.

Pretty sure the new ones are 25 degrees.

Years ago I used the factory bevel we are talking 10yrs ago. In the last 6 or so I have flattened the bevel and gone from the 125 to the 160 to the 190 elgrande. Now I make my own trade point version in 190 left bevel 25 degree. I had no problems killing mule deer with the factory bevel heads in 125 and 160 grain. I would go with Dr Ashby's recommendation of flatting the bevel, if you have the means.

I did 2 and they came out nice with a lansky kit I have had for ever. but even with a file and the extra course it took forever! I sharpend one with the factory bevel with the lansky kit also and it came out pretty sharp too but you can tell the differance for sure with the 25 degree bevel. I'm shooting a fairly light poundage bow so was wanting the best "mechanical advantage" I can get. plus they fly awsome!

I have only shot the factory bevel.  They seem to work for me, so I've left them alone. I don't think the animals I've shot with them know the difference!  lol!
