Title: Would you drill 5/16’’ holes in your longbow?
Post by: Bowkill7 on February 03, 2010, 07:42:00 PM
I drill holes in all my recurves for Selway side mount quivers without hesitation.  I was going to do the same to a longbow but when I got it in today it doesn't really look like there is enough room and the wood looks amazing and I hate to drill in it.  Have you or would you put bushings in your longbow?

If it was one of those longbows that has a chuncky recurve-ish riser, probably fine. Most lb's just dont have enough wood to safely be drilled for bushings.

With all the good quivers out there, I don't see any reason to drill a longbow. Eagle's Flight, Thunderhorn, Kanati, and so on all make excellent strap on quivers. Save yourself some grief and buy one of them.

No. Used a, er, used a Grt Northern.

Longbows do not look good with taps in the riser IMO. Recurves on the other hand often carry them with grace.

I had quiver mounts on a 3 piece Bob Lee longbow with the big recurve type riser, was always shot with the quiver on and is a great solid mount.  Would never put a hole on my lite weight longbows, either the Morrison or the Ragim.

My thoughts exactly. Although all three of those quivers and the Great Northerns are very nice, the best bow quiver I have found so far is the Eagle Flight Archery Navaho Chief with the Totem. It is just about perfect, and don't ask me how to improve it because I haven't figured that out.

I have a couple of bows that have inserts. I wish the guys who ordered them that way would not have, but that's what was there when I bought the bows. I never use the inserts and they detract from the beauty of the bows and decrease the resale value.

I don't understand why anyone would put holes in their pretty bows when there are excellent strap on bow quivers on the market, but if someone wants to mess up his own bow, I say "go for it". It's a free country, thank God.

Personally, I wouldn't drill holes in any of my bows. I use a Thunderhorn Mini-Boa Quiver or a hip quiver. I'm going to get a bowfishing rig, but will use a strap on adapter to secure to bow.

Yes.... I have done it before and I'll do it again. If that's the Quiver you like and want to use, go for it. I have gotten away from bow quivers but still use a Kwikee Quiver on a couple, then take it off when I get set up. DRILL THAT BOW!!!!!!

Well evidently it IS possible to get away with it since 3 or 4 have said they did it to theirs.

You need to think about the type of wood the particular part of the riser you want to drill is made of, how much wood is there, how close to the fades you want to drill etc.  I bet you could get away with it but my concern would be long term.

I had a Herters recurve that was drilled and tapped for an insert from the back side right at the throat of the grip.  Must have lasted a lot of years as it was an old bow but it broke completely in two there during shipping to me when I bought it.  I realize getting broke during shipping is different than being broken during use but still, the insert was very obviously the weak point and I have to wonder if the bow would have made it in one piece if it hadn't been drilled?  No matter how careful we are with our bows, hunting brings unexpected opportunities to damage our gear.  Ever fallen while carrying your bow?  Ever fall on it, drop it from the tree or have to throw it aside when you start to fall on a steep climb?  Just think of the possibilities.  Longbows are wicked tough.  Why weaken one?

Personally, I wouldn't do it unless you could find a smaller insert.

I would never do it myself but i let the guys at Black Widow put KwiKee Kwiver inserts on my PSA X and then i had Art from Cedar Ridge Leather Works put a cool leather pattern on my quiver.

It doesnt effect the way the bow shoots and i love being able to pop the quiver off when im in my stand and lay it in my backpack.

I also love the Eagle Flights Quiver and they are pretty simple to remove if you want to remove it from the bow.

Im one of these guys that likes to hunt without my quiver on the bow so i may get the quiver inserts on my next purchase.

I use to put them in my personal bows because I really like the Great Northern sidemount quiver. I put to much time in them overlays to cover them up with straps!

I quit doing it when Lost Creek bowyer Chad Francis and I were hunting and he had dropped his bow, it must have landed just right on the quiver and the insert popped out taking a big chunk of the riser wood with it!

So, no, not anymore!

I just sold my Martin Venom (great bow) but not in line with how I personaly view longbows,,,it had the bulk to drill mounting holes and it wouldn't of distracked from it's over all look or feel.
The bow I've just replaced it with is a straight limbed, mild locator gripped bow designed an built in the tradition of the American flat bow.
There's no way in a million years I would drill this bow.
It's personal thing,,,you do what you want,,it's your bow.
