Title: another string question
Post by: bornagainbowhunter on February 03, 2010, 05:06:00 PM
I use B-50 on most strings that I build.  Looking at all of the posts about skinny strings has got under my skin.  I want to build one.  My question is what strand would I need of 8125 for a 67@28" longbow. I will have the loops padded with B-50 to about 12 or 14 strands.

Might sound like a dumb question, but I don't want to goof up my baby...

I would probably go with 14 strands. My opinion if you draw 28

Dont forget that only lighter bows shooting light arrows really show alot of improvment from using a skinny string.  So at that weight if you shooting a big heavy arrow your wasting you time to gain 2fps.

When BCY published breaking strengths, they gave 8125 a rating of 120# (static load, not shock).

Personally I'd go with 12 strands, with 18 in the loops.  I pad my loops with dacron.

I wouldn't expect any big speed gains, but it might make a difference in noise.  That's what I've heard the most about--rarely if ever a noticeable speed difference, but often it can make even a quiet bow quieter.

With 8125 you will have a more durable string that has a lot less stretch and creep than dacron also.

Thanks Chad for mentioning, "static, not shock strength".

I hope folks will pay attention to that statement.
