I built my first 450+ string last night (8 strand padded to 16 w/ D-97) and one of the first things I noticed about the material is it's a large diameter thread (I had read that in the past but wow). I hit the desired length on the head but the loops look too thick/round for what I was going for. Maybe it's my imagination since I've been building a lot of 8 and 10 strand 8125 and D-97's lately and they're small diameter strings when finished...loops and main body.
Since it was a 8 strand string I padded it to 16 with D-97 but think I should only pad to 12 or 14 going forward...the fade areas were also thicker than I expected them to be. The main body of the string was a nice diameter and I don't think I'll have to double serve, the BCY .025 Braided 62XS worked well and my x-nocks fit nicely. I'm expecting .024 diameter halo will work great also with 8 strands...6 strand strings might be a different story.
So what are people padding the 450+ string to and with? I like using D-97 as I have a lot of material and color options to work with.
Thanks,
Josh
Josh, I had a friend make me several that are 6 strand, with 12 strand loops. They fit perfectly on my bows and shoot great. I have one on my 64", 55# longbow right now...same configuration.
On my 8 strand 450+ I like to pad with 4 strands of B50 per bundle,I like to serve it with BCY .025 braided. It gives me the nock fit I like, for X-nocks and Easton 3D Super nocks.I sometimes pad with the same material, but like to use B50 to pad with.Been using B50 to pad FF type strings for years.I make my 8 strand 450+ for bows 65# and heavier.A 6 strand 450+ I serve first with BCY 1D .017 and then double serve with BCY .021 braided just long enough for my fingers and nock. This combo gives me a great nock fit too.
I pad to 12 or 14 with 450 itself. i dont like to mix different materials for padding. i feel like the loops stay more consistent when using the same material. many will tell you that is "splitting hairs", so be it.
B50..450...yeah, I'm still trying to do the math!
I seen Rob pad the loops on a D97 endless loop with dacron on a video he did. It's just padding, sometimes I'll use the same material to pad the loops but use B50 dacron most of the time for padding the loop ends.Maybe it is because I have alot of B50 dacron,I only have two older recurves that I use dacron on.All my other bows I use D97,450+ or 8125.
