Im thinking about buying a Tred Barta bow from 3 Rivers. I was wondering what people thought about them. I was thinking about getting a 60#
I have one and although it is a decent bow, I wish I would have surfed the classifieds here longer or bought a cheaper custom bow instead of the Barta Bow, just my two cents.
Whats wrong with it? Im a little edgy on spending 500 bucks on a bow when i can get one for 300.
Patiently watching and shopping the classifieds is a great way to check out some bows. If you decide you want to try something else, you can usually get most or all of your money back.
From what I have read on here the people who own them seem to really like them. I can't recall a bad thing being said about them and the ones I have seen on the classified adds here, tend to move quickly.
Jacob, welcome to tradgang.
Have you ever shot a #60 longbow before?
I'm sure the Barta bow is a fine bow, have never shot one though.
I just sold a 50# to a Tradganger.
They are a good shooting bow.
Check out Maddogg Archery's Mutt. It is wood that is mitch matched, but I hear they shoot well and you can own 2 for the price of a new Barta Bow.
Good luck,
Paul
Jacob, if you can find one for $300 I would say go for it. I was under the assumption from your post that you would be purchasing one new from 3 rivers archery. My fault for the assumption. I am not saying anything is wrong with the Barta Bow but IMHO you can get a lot more bow for the $499.00 new price tag from some of the other sponsers here.
I was not impressed with the two I've seen and shot. A father and son had them at one of the bowhunter ed classes I taught and I played around with them after the class was over.
They sure remind me of a Martin Bushmaster. I love the Bushmaster......

Nice bow,great prices!
Desert Dude is right on. The Barta Bow is a Martin packaged with his name brand. I thought that it was a Savannah but I don't remember exactly....but it is a Martin model....no more...no less.
Correct the Barta Bow is made by Martin with a birch riser and maple core limbs I would have to agree with Desert Dude that it is close to the Bushmaster..... Jacob if you are still interested in the Barta Bow let me know, maybe we could work something out and I'd ship mine to you to try out.
i love em. had two now. the grips feel good and they shoot good. i personally would say get one!
Amen on the SiegeWorks Vote!! Awsome Bows, Not OverPriced, Excellent for the Beginner and "Frugal" Archer too!
I Just Got an "American LongBow" from them and Coulndt Be Happier!! Or More Impressed with the Bow!!! Awsome!!
I had one two years ago, 50@28, wish I hadnt sold it, smooth bow, nice gruip, but I was just starting trad didnt know what I had.
elbow, that was the same thing we did. got one at 45, wanted more weight and sold it for a savannah--which is probably the best mass produced longbow made, but still hard to replace the "first". we just got another one yesterday in 50 lbs and it feels great and shoots just as good. shooting 3 under it is still surprisingly quiet with no tuning at all in reference to the arrow--i just grabbed one and shot it a few times
if its anything like a bushmaster then its a fine bow I love my bushmaster
As I remember Howattman said the Brata bow is built on the Bushmaster forms with just a little differant grip and maple in place of the nicer woods (red elm and Oka) that was on the
bushmaster.
The Bushmaster was my first longbow and I still love shooting it although I now have a few more to pick from.
Can't have just one longbow.

Do yourself a favor. Order a Custom Made MOHAWK for 475.00. My 2 cents.
i looked at the siegeworks.com. Ive been shooting bows for a while. but not one with as much power. I may just get a american longbow from them. Will 50# drop a deer????
Jacob,
50# is PLENTY for deer and then some.
You probably don't need 60#, especially if you are new to trad shooting.
Start low poundage and work up. Your form is much more important than the weight of your bow.
Later on if you get to hunt moose, bear, elk etc...
then go to 60 lbs.
Do a search here, plenty of deer sized game killed with MUCH less than 50#.
John
Ok i was just wondering. The bow i have now is actually one i made a while back had it tested and the guy said it was 45#. It just doesnt feel that tough to me so i dont really know.
Go for it!
A 45 pounder, and one that you made would be a great hunting weapon!!
Wish I had the skill to make one.
45 is plenty, get arrows that shoot well, and go hunting!
It may not feel tough to you, but at 45lbs, it will feel "tough" to what ever you shoot with it!
(For what it is worth, my "go to" bow is a 44# Black Widow longbow)It has killed everthing I have ever shot with it from squirrels, hogs, to deer. And our Florida whitetail isn't much smaller than your South Carolina deer!
Good luck my friend!
John
another great option is to get a custom built by big jim!!! big jim makes some super fine bows for around $475.
Jacob, sent you a PM with another suggestion--excellent looking bow at a fabulous price!
What bentpole said. A Mohawk is a better bow for less money.
Love the bushmasters, great bows. Names mean nothing to the target, if martin/howatt makes it on the bushmaster form this is a great shooting, well made bow.
I have no problem with the Barta Bow. I've heard great things about them.
Hefty price tag for a manufactured bow. You could get a Samick Red Stag or Bear Montana for cheaper. Or as others have said you could get a Maddog. I would add Elk Ridge Archery and Bama Bows to the mix as well.
All custom bows for cheaper. I own two Bamas and can vouch for Nate's quality. So many here stand behind Mike's bows at Maddog, and Elk Ridge Archery's Pilgrims are a great bow as well.
I would have a very difficult time paying $500 for a remake of a longbow that Martin discontinued years ago and never sold for that high of a price to begin with.
For $500, there are some top-notch bowyers who can custom build you a world class longbow; Thunderstick and Big Jim just to name two. I've shot the Barta bow, which cost the same amount of money as my Thunderstick MOAB.
If I were to use the MOAB as a baseline of comparison, I'd have to say that about $200 of the Barta bow's price tag is in the name itself.
ok. i have one more question. Whats the difference with a reflex/deflex bow and a regular??????
If you look at unstrung pictures of longbows A Hill Style has straight limbs flat A reflex /deflex longbow has reflex/ deflex in its limbs. A Kick up and a kick down to the riser. Hard to explain. Go to a couple of bowyers sites here and you will see the difference.
Go to the Great Northern website www.gnbco.com (http://www.gnbco.com)
and click on bows. This page will illustrate the reflex deflex. Look at the difference between the the traditional longbow (straight limbed) and the fireball (heavy reflex deflex).
