Title: New to me, Morrison Dakota
Post by: pdk25 on February 02, 2010, 07:27:00 PM
I received this bow yesterday after work.  It is the first morrison that I have shot, and I am very happy with it so far.  Got a great deal on this bow from Dave Stinson(hunt it).  It has a bacote riser and bamboo laminations, with copperhead skins and some type of antler tip.  It shoots like a rocket launcher and is quiet, to boot.  It's not taking me too long to get used to the weight of this bow, which is around 79# at my draw length and around 4 pounds heavier than any other of my bows.  I was surprised by this because when I recently drew a bow to around 83# it kinda felt like my shoulder would fall off.  Anyway here are some pics.  Oh yeah, I was really surprised at how small the grip was for this weight of bow.  I have average sized hands, so it fits nicely.

That's a beauty!  Thinking about drawing it hurts my shoulder though, I'm gonna have to think about icing it now.
I do love my wimpy 55# Dakota.

That is a beauty.  Bob is an artist with the little extras; your skins look to be his typical super quality and I love the way he beautifully blends the tip colors and the limbs.  I suspect some do like the use of the often seen brilliant white antler tips on bows with wood and skins such as yours but to me they are garish.  Good luck with your joint soft tissues holding up under those pull weights, some guys have no problem, some of us pay for it later in life.

Adam:  How do I answer that?  Uhh, that would be no.  Gonna have to sell some before I get to Oklahoma.

easyup:  I'll just have to see how the shoulder holds up.  I don't really push it and have no problem taking a day off of shooting at the slightest twinge.  I'm really just playing around.  I certainly don't shoot the heavy ones as well as my bows that are around 60#, but I would like to see if I can eventually.  (not to say that I'm completely satisfied with the 60# bows either, lol).  In the back of my head I keep on thinking that if I ever have the money and opportunity to go after cape buffalo, I want to be able to handle the equipment that I'm certain will get the job done.

Glad you liked it Pat! Those are kudu horn tips. Also, remember that is a very rare Dakota, it's the only one Bob ever labeled Cougar by mistake. He offered to fix it up but it made no difference to me or any of the critters it slayed.

Your right Jeff I have more! Guy can never have two many Shawnees! I ordered two more from Bob last weekend at Kazoo. The one piece was getting to hard to fly with and I like how my Shawnee's pack much better. I have 73# Shawnee limbs to replace this one.

Yeah, I know Tom.  It's funny.  I'm in the worst shape of my life and pulling the heaviest bows.  Go figure.

I noticed that also.

I owned a Morrison Cougar for a few years...flat smoked an arrow. It made my recurves jealous!

Nice bow there

Just think of how well you will be able to shoot your 60# bow though after shooting this critter.

I used to practice with weighted pucks too for hockey...then you would get a real puck and it was like a feather.

Same idea.

Huntryx and Dusty,

It says Cougar but it is a Dakota. Early Monday production for Bob, he was out of coffee! He says it is the only Dakota he ever misslabeled Cougar. Bob offered to fix it up but it made no difference to me and all the stuff I shot with it.

I'll probably bring it along for the ride, but I'll probably be hunting with my RER's.
