Title: Went for a walk...
Post by: Cyclic-Rivers on February 01, 2010, 07:06:00 PM
My wife and I took the horse out for a trail ride.  I brought the bow to see if the horse would spook at the sound of an arrow discharge and to kill some stumps.

To my surprise the horse not only didn't care about me shooting the bow around him, he even let us shoot from horseback, it just kinda stinks having to get down every few minutes to retrieve the arrows.  However, the deer usually just hang tight and let us pass while out trail riding.  I have an idea

Next year there will be more getting shot at other than stumps.  I wonder how the horse will react to a deer getting mortally hit and crashing off?  I may be finding the ground quickly...

Hate to argue with you Art but I live next door to a CO and he told me there wasn't any law specifically against it. Now he's human too and I've never seen anything about it in the regs one way or the other, so if you can show me where it says it's illegal I sure would like to see it.

I have only seen where shooting from a motorized vehicle, including boats was a no-no. Never heard anything about a horse....would be interesting to know!!

That's alright, I would keep the horse at the stable because its just too much work to make it enjoyable.

If I get a deer and want to drag it out, well that's a different story...

Reminds me of the punchline to an old joke: "OK, you can have the deer, just let me get my saddle off it".

No joke about leaving the horse. I almost had a runaway once while trying to load a dead deer on a horse.

Plus your horse is just about the right color for some idiot to think it was a deer in the woods. Unless you are for certain there is no one else out there. May look good on TV. But might caution on the safe side and leave Spunky home.

Firstly if I thought a person could see the size of a horse and think it was a deer - well somebody had a baby that should not have survived..teehee.

But if he shot my horse - my shotgun would be blasting back.

Shooting off a horse is the ultimate....I shoot gophers of him and rabbits all the time..just haven't trained him to retrieve the arrows.

as far as loading game on a horse..again it a process.....don't just think you can throw something on his back without some preparation...some things can happen that a fella might not be ready for ...yup that's what I would say.

It has to be trained not just expected. I had a friend that was a guide and they had to pack this Grizz back...the horse was freakin.

NOW THIS ISN'T THE WAY I WOULD HAVE DONE IT<<<
He took a handfull of the bears blood and plastered it on the horse nose and muzzle....well when the hopping and rearing stopped well he just rolled that bear up in a tarp and tied him on..

Horse just followed along

I posted these here a couple years ago....not shooting from the horse, but dragging out.  Killed this doe back of our house late season and she died just outside our pasture....the wheels started turning so instead of the quad my wife and I just hooked up Ole and Angar, our Fjord geldings, and away we went.  The big guys didn't pay any attention to the dead deer....but I might have had just a little bit excess horse power here!

You could always do the Jeremiah Johnson thing and hide behind the horse to walk up on them.

Jeremiah Johnson: [Jeremiah and Bear Claw hunt elk] Wind's right, but he'll just run soon as we step out of these trees.

Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Trick to it. Walk out on this side of your horse.

Jeremiah Johnson: What if he sees our feet?

Bear Claw Chris Lapp: Elk don't know how many feet a horse has!

I love that line...

Ryan Nice pics. Thanks for sharing! That's a huge Doe!  Our horse is also a Palomino.  He is a quarter horse cross.

My horse won't drag, I already know he'll freak out at the ropes rubbing against his body.  I do know however I can throw anything on his back and he'll take it.

If he gets shot I will look at the gun club next door where my wedding reception was held. Did I say he was desensitized to gun shots?  It's a nice bonus to our location.

You'll only find wheel guys over there.  Notice I said wheel not real.  Periodically they hit their releases while trying to draw and launch arrows in the air! Just another reason not to shoot there. (which implies unmanageable draw weights.)

I'll stay right where I am thank you.

Hayslope -

Norwegian Fjords - Viking horses, old breed with primitive markings, considered a draft pony (but pretty BIG ponies).  Mainly big lovable oafs.

I thought I would share some horse dragging pic's. This year my brother John who helped me out from a heart attack drag on a eight point I shot on the far back side of a corn field this year. His horse that did the pulling is a two year old tennessee walker named Rex. My crazy brother broke that horse himself. He says it is one of the best horses he ever owned. That was the first deer Rex has ever dragged, he did real good.

Ryan - Those are some great pic's, have to show my brother.

Brian, Do you tie the rope to the saddle horn?

I have an english saddle but could probably tie somthing to a running martingale or through a strap on the english saddle my wife uses.

Walkers are excellent horses and that's a fine deer.

Congratulations!  :clapper:

Charlie- I had to ask my brother today what he tied the rope off to on the saddle for he was the one that did all the rigging. On that particular western saddle it has a extra set of belly rings or tie rings on both sides that he tied to. I have to tell you my brother is the horseman, all I really know how to do is ride.

Hope to meet up with you at Shawn's bunny hunt in a couple weeks.
Happy trails, Brian

Cool,  I'll be there.

I thought I knew how to ride until 2 years ago I ended up looking up from a bed of poison ivy.  didn't know I could fall so fast.  I  like trail rides but dont care to run any more! Nice and slow on half dead horses is my speed.

I'll push a bunny your way at shawn's.
