For those of you that do cresting, do you topcoat your cresting with anything for protection? I have been dipping my crest with a water based Urethane but was wondering if there is a better product that provides more protection to the cresting.

Works great for me. I dip or brush, whatever method I'm doing at the time, with one coat, then do my cresting and then finish my dipping or brushing process. If there is not one coat of finish on the shaft the paint used for cresting will follow the grains in the wood and fine lines are not gonna happen. Just my way and works.
Have a good'un.

I paint over my Testors enamels, with water based poly.
Do it right at the crester, an hour after the last coat of enamel.

3-4 dips of Spar Urethane, crest with Testors, wipe over crest with shellac, and dip x2 with Spar Urethane.
Presto waterPROOF arrows with no smear crest!

Lately I have tried a couple dips of Gasket Laq. The stuff goes over Fletch-lac products with no problem. Also works so far on RC car paints that I like for carbons. My only complaint about GS is it has to be at least 70 degrees to dip.The warmer the better.

x2.Learned the hard way about putting a coat over the stain and cap dip before cresting. You won't be doing any fine lines without a base clear coat.I use minwax quick dry poly.

This stuff should not be used outside the desert, it ain't even water RESISTANT! For target arrows only!

I have used Bohning Blue Clear for years. I just dip one coat after scresting, then flatch.
