I just read the Wapiti thread. I'd love to go for elk. But, it didn't work out for this year so, I'm going for moose in Oct. Show me what I want to see. :bigsmyl:
I took this one on a solo hunt in Alaska. Moose are on my mind. I used a 65# Wes Wallace and Woodsman head. My total arrow weight was 730 gr. Good luck. Mike

Canada moose from Ontario, 2006. Homemade recurve, 499-grain carbon arrow, Ace Standard broadhead. Double lung complete passthrough. I would love to hunt moose again some day.

Thats an animal that is near the top of my bucket list of hunts! Great animals guys!
This is a moose a friend and I came across in Colorado. He sent us a message!

2007 Alberta 6 yards shot, straight thru the heart, he went 40 yards, Fox breed, 47 lbs 550 grain arrow, steel force broadhead. Sorry for picture quality my hard drive crashed and this is the only photo left

If I don't get to hunt but one more animal before I die I want it to be a moose. However that will have to wait a few years most likely as I am in prevet school now and then another 4 years of vet school. Keep the pics coming, at least I can dream!
This is going WAY back in time. Still shot a recurve. Alaska peninsula, circa 1985.

Serious moose envy here guys! Thanks for sharing! Anyone else?
Maybe some day I will hunt 'em!
I too love moose. I killed this Canadian bull in NH in 2003....
Last fall I shot a small Shiras bull moose with my recurve in Wyoming, then went elk hunting. Of course this guy then felt safe in walking right up to me and posing....
Can't wait for my next moose hunt!
It's been a while now! I shot this one in Alaska in 2002! 75# 3-piece takedown TimberHawk recurve, 2219 arrow, with 125 gr Snuffer. Went about 60 yards out into the lake. Had to attach a rope and tow him in this close. Fortunately, I had an amazing partner and we were able to disassemble him in the lake in about 3 hours.

Those are all awesome pictures.
Moose is on my short list to do hunts.
Since my chance of drawing here in CO is about as good as winning the Power Ball Lottery, been looking at BC.
Wish I had a Moose Pic to share!
This thread is killing me........
I'm going to have to break down and actually book a hunt. You don't want to know how many years (and how many locations) I've been playing the moose lotto. I started applying about five years ago in New Brunswick when I discovered that they have the best odds (if you want to call it that) compared to the moose states. I'll keep applying (as they say; Hey, Ya never know!)everywhere they offer one. Maybe this year will be my year!
Brian check hidden wolf he is a sponsor and this is the intrusion pattern best I have ever found i use it for every species i hunt
limbhanger that is an awesome New Foundland bull .I was on the rock twice but hunted caribou we saw some great bull moose !!
wouldnt know what to do if i shot one of those
Wissler,
That's a beautiful animal. It always makes me laugh when I hear people say that there are no big bulls in Newfoundland.
Nice pictures. Boy I hope I draw a tag this year.
Gilbert
Great thread.
More moose footage from the Alaska Peninsula last season.

I really want to hunt them someday too. Either with Eldron, or in B.C.
Great bulls guys congrats!
Quite an animal
Great thread very cool stuff.
Here's my cow from a DIY hunt in NH in '07.

Awesome bull shot with an Awesome bow!!!!!
Great photos fellows. Keep em coming.
Very nice guys. Keep'em coming. Can't wait till OCT. Hope to get one close enough to get pics like those. BTW, we're going to Newfoundland too. Been there twice, got a nine point with the gun, within bow range of course, on my second trip. Hoping for a nice bull, but I will take a cow if no bulls around.
Dang, I want some big paddles like those.
This is a pic of my buddy Yves' 2009 Alberta moose. He is Bloubow here on Tradgang. Moose are an absolute blast to hunt but they can be absolutely frustrating too.
It's hard to believe that no moose existed in Newfoundland before some were planted there. I think now they have one of the highest moose densities.

sorry for the double post, tried to make the pic larger and failed.
Good stuff!A moose hunt in Alaska or the Yukon is on my bucket list.Love the pics, keep it coming!
Here is a Saskatchewan Moose going for an Ontario Moose this fall: this moose fell to a 69LB longbow 2216 arrows and a 4 blade eskimo called in and shot at 11 yards.
These moose are huge!! One day I want to hunt a moose and an elk! Not at the same time of course. I just can't get over how big the moose are, I might even be able to hit one from 10 yds!!! :goldtooth:
Lots of great pics here, guys. Thanks for sharing.
Hope to hunt moose someday myself. Here in Washington moose is a once in a lifetime tag, if you're lucky enough to actually draw one. Thus far all I have to show for my efforts are a bunch of points. But someday perhaps the tag gods will smile upon me...or so I hope.
This guy has made the rounds on the e mail circut he is big for sure has been reported from Ontario to Alaska

Man this thread is giving me the itch again! Went on an alaskan moose hunt back in 06 had a legal moose standing 20 yards from me ten minutes into the first days hunt! My guide tells me we can do better...yeah right "should have shot that bull" that's been my motto ever since that day. Never seen another legal moose for five days...ouch that hurts! But o well that's the way it goes. Congrats to all the lucky ones!
Should be about time to apply for my 20th time for a permit here in Maine. I can't wait to draw. The pictures have given me the itch again. Great moose all thanks to all who shared.
Great pictures. If I were to go on a hunt, the Moose is #1 on my list...someday....
Moose is number one on my list. Someday!
Hey jeanpaul3006, I saw your picture and read the story in the paper, what a great moose. Congrats.
thanks,it was a great adventure and i still don't believe it ever happened. definately the highlight of my hunting career.
Great thread all. Some great moose as well. I have had the privledge to video a couple of moose hunts, One was for my Dad. What an experiance moose hunting is. I hope I get the chance on day.
Bumped back up. There's got to be some more pics to add.
Had a talk with one of the guys I'll be going on the trip with. He says, "Leave the indian bow at home, it won't have the kinetic energy to pass through a moose at 40 yards".
1) I plan on being alot closer.
2) I disagree with him.
Will I get both lungs at 40 yards? I won't be shooting that far anyway (I hope), even if I did bring the c-bow.
Yukon bull. One arrow at 12 yards and watched him collapse at 40 yards.
Wish I could remember where to find pics of Craig Warren's bull from Maine this year. He took it with a bow he made and broadheads from his first hunting season 50 years ago or something neat like that. My only moose was with a rifle; I'd like to change that sometime in the near future.
This thread is killing me!!!! I just found out I'm on my way to Ontario this year for a moose hunt! 10 days in late September with my dad. We are party hunting and have a bull and calf tag!
I can't wait for September. Looks like I'll get to put that build-along acadian woods bow to the test!
Michael
Huge pix folks, much thanks!
While elk hunting 12K' near Estes Park, Colo had (2) record book moose within 20 yards. I froze speechless in awe! Fortunately, the outfitter was with me to verify.
2009 unguided hunt in Alaska...can't wait to be back there this September. 18 yard shot --> one wood arrow --> bull ran 70 yards and crashed.
Awesome pictures of some awesome animals!
I'm planning it this year in Northern Alberta with my son who helps guide up there and a couple of young fellow Tradgangers from Arkansas. I can't wait .If you've never been on a northern Moose hunt you owe it to yourself.the whole experience from fishing to grouse shooting with family and good friends is a lifetime experience.
Here you go, 43" Alberta Moose, called in by the mighty "MUSKWA"

That's what I like to see...some New England brusiers.Awesome moose Craig.  :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
nice pics.
Extremely jealous...one day it will happen.
WOW....ever since i saw my first moose while fishing in ontario..i want to hunt one someday!!! great pictures i envy you all...do they tase good? ive never had a chance to try a moose steak! i would asume from what they eat they'd taste great.
Great pics! Keep them coming! Most likely another 7 years before I have a chance to hunt them.
My wife has as uncle who lives about four hours drive south of Fairbanks who has always said that all I have to do is call and tell him I am coming up to hunt. About what would a DYI moose and black bear up there cost?
Maybe its me, but for some reason, to me, it seems like Moose and stickbows seem to go together.
I shot a bull back in 1980 with my bow in B.C.Canada took pictures with a 35mm wished I could get them changed over to digital, would love to go back there again,
Nice pictures!! If I keep looking at this thread I think I might have to apply for a moose tag somewhere. ;)
It's a dream of mine to get a tag and hunt moose!! Putting in for NH, VT, and ME lotteries this year! I think I got about 15 years before I draw a tag though...

You may be dead in 15 yrs. Go to Canada, it may cost more due to need of an outfitter, but 15 yrs for a hope and a prayer...
Thanks for all the replies, and pictures.
Kevin - that looks alot like my back door...funny can't remember seeing him there though.
Nice bull - heck they are all nice - 12 yards - called him in or did you spot and stalk him
Jer Bear
Great moose pics it's enough to make me dream. I have max moose pionts for cows this year, maybe it will be my year to hunt a moose.
Hey Jer Bear...
I'm kind of a sneaky guy so you might've missed seeing me. ;^)
I was hunting with Rod Collins up the White River from the Alaskan Highway...Brian's Creek drainage. It was a spot-stalk-call deal. We spotted him and then stalked into position to begin calling. This bull was pretty bold...I passed a 20 yard shot up because he was a walking zombie. Finally laced him in the ribs at 12 steps. He darn near trampled Rod when he ran off.
I love your back yard! I'm hoping to get there again some fine day.
Kevin

Here is a moose I shot up in Maine a while back after putting in for a draw for 20 plus years. It was worth it. This moose was shot at about 20 yards. It was double lunged and it still went about 500 yds pouring blood out the whole way. 48 1/2 inch spread. 10.5 years old. They are an impressive animal. - jwingman
Kevin C'mon up maybe we can do a hunt together - I think I am up for a C guide licence again
jer Bear
Hey! Not fair to tease me. I love that Yukon country. Whitehorse is a lot of fun for a traveling southerner.
You know the good folks out at Northfork Taxidermy?
Kevin
Buchanan's - NOPE - tee hee.
I know Chuck better than the son....WHY.
Jer Bear
Hey, Shane mounted my ram and moose and did an outstanding job. Hannah was always nice to talk to!
Did this Rod Collins guide for different outfits? I think I met him at Blackstone. Old guy, gray hair, looked like he could smoke 3 packs of cigarettes and then walk you into the ground? He came in just for moose season this Rod I met.
Here's my bull, taken on a DIY hunt in Alaska, with a 65lb selfbow. Called him in to 5 or so yards.
I was just curious Jerry. They have a pretty cool place out there. They handled a moose and a bear for me, and did nice work.
We stayed at a hotel up town near the old rail depot. The prime rib was fine!
Hey Steve...not sure of Rod's overall career. He's a few years younger than me...didn't smoke on our trip...used about 2 cans of Skoal every day and swallowed 100% of it! Tougher than a spruce knot. A genuine northcountry cowboy. I liked him immensely.
wow!
Hey DIY guys that hunted Alaska. How did you deal with all that meat and packing every thing out?
Jerry...
Books have been written on your questions. I could write a post answering this, but it'd take 20 min to read it all. Suffice to say you need a number of skills, and you need to know ahead of time exactly how you're going to 1) butcher, 2) pack, and 3) hang/care for many hundreds of pounds of meat. A plan is needed.
It's extremely hard, tough work.
WOW!! That moose hunting looks like an unbelievable adventure...
If someone didn't want to put in for a draw for years upon years and decided to go to Canada and hunt, what would something like that cost? Is there one province in Canada that is better than others for size of the moose, if so, what is it?
what about Alaska? Do you have to put in for a draw up there? I bet you have to have a guide if you are a non-resident don't you? If so, that would put the cost WAY UP THERE wouldn't it?
Lastly, the pic of that moose walking across the street is Photshopped isn't it? That can't be real.
Thanks for all the pics and stories....really enjoyed them. Now I want to hunt them....
Nalajr
Short clip of a little bull a few weeks after the season a couple Falls ago. Was out looking for a new place to trap & he was alongside the road. He was pretty silly with the rut and let me get close, but if you know moose behavior, you can see at the end he was getting snotty so I shut the camera off & left him alone.
(http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/chinook907/th_MVI_0032.jpg) (http://s258.photobucket.com/albums/hh271/chinook907/?action=view¤t=MVI_0032.flv)
A superb thread, gentlemen. Thank you.
Congrats all, moose hunting is a dream of mine and I would like to do it with friends more than with an outfitter.
Jerry once you get it out of the bush, then you are left with another decision, how to freeze it and transport back home. You better prepare for the price of success as well, because cutting and packing will cost you about 0.50 per pound and freezing is extra, then you have to pay for shipping it back. So after packing all the meat out (as much as 700# boned out), often portions of it are given away or traded to help supplement cost of shipping. If you do ship it all back, you need to have freezer space at home as well.
I spent 7 days in NW Ontario last September. Never saw (or heard) a moose but did get about 1000,000 bug bites. Truthfully, except for the bugs, it was a great time with good friends. Saw wolves and bears and caught alot of walleye and pike. But unfortunately, no moose pics. :knothead:
one of these years soon here I'm going to try my luck at one of these brusiers.
I am going to start saving my pennies for a moose hunt. Im 42yrs old so maybe in 4-5yrs i could go on one of these dream hunts.
I hear that Joe, I'd love to stomp around in the Alaskan wilderness. Great bull's guys.
Currently, you do not need a guide to hunt moose in Alaska. They talk about making it mandatory every year, but last I heard it can still be done without a guide.
The moose meat is fantastic and it better be because by the time you get it home it would be cheaper to buy filet mignon!
I actually donated some to a church and was able to claim it's value as a charitable contribution.
Bumping back to the top for whatever more pics are out there, new and old. I leave next Friday. Been shooting all summer out to 40 yards.
Tatersalad, how did your trip go?
I just got back from Elk hunting in Northern Alberta ,and man I sure wished I had a moose tag,we saw lots .In the area we were hunting in the general moose season is a draw ,but elk were over the counter.I'm very tempted to go back next year solely for moose two weeks earlier in the Archery season which is OTC .I grew up on moose meat when I was a kid and even today I crave moose roasts,NONE better and the gravy is to kill for,Hey half a million wolves can't be wrong. In all honesty. The king of animals to hunt AND eat.
Theres a little Italian fella that lurks on here that may be in for a differant treat in the future LOL!
If I could only hunt one animal, it would be the Moose. You can call them in (a lot of fun), You can't believe how tall they are, maybe the best meat to be found and lots of it. BIG JOB though. So what, you get what you pay for.
Newfoundland would be my choice for a Canadian hunt. LOTS of moose and Newfies are the finest kind of people. Quite the accents though, take you about a week to figure out what they're saying! Drive up, long ferry ride across the water, big province, big trip, big fun.
Pick a mid size bull - bit of a rack for the display (still lots of bone to hold) and the better eating variety. My 3 kills have been with a rifle, so no pics here, but the smallest was able to be cut with a fork. The big rack is the most impressive though....
