Post by: razorsharptokill on January 28, 2010, 03:36:00 PM
Vanilla Gorilla (Cam), myself and a friend of mine went to hunt with Curtis Kellar of 7th Age bowhunting. Here are some pics from the hunt.

Very cool looking area.  Where are the hogs though?  More to come?  I know I'll be watching.  Thanks for sharing your trip.

Great pics.  Let's hear how it went.  Man, pics 4-7 look awfully prickly.  I thought multiflora rose was bad.

I went 0-2. After all these years I still forget to pic a spot. I am pretty disgusted with myself.

27?  Man,  you guys had a heat wave!    :D

Fantastic pictures!  Sorry you didn't get one, but I know you had to have had a good time with Curtis.

I took about a million picture of windmills, but never got one as cool as yours.

Thanks Gregg. My camera crapped out on me my last day just as 8 Javis came in. I had them all around my pit blind! One young one was 6 feet from me.

I watched the big boar breed two different sows, watched a stand off between a cow and a valiant young Javi. Very cool animals!

I'am stuck in a motel in Oklahoma City and hope to be home by Sat. AM will try to get some pic's up hear.

My daughter Mattie and I had a great time and Curtis did every thing in his power to put us on game. More on that later. I drove 10 hours today and only got 390 miles on the truck. No offence guy's but Oklahoma need's MORE snow plows and LOT'S MORE salt truck's.

It was good to share camp with you and your daughter Doug.

I left ahead of schedule due to the storm and my disgust with myself for the bad hit on that Javi boar. It is really icey here now.

Ft. Sill, which you passed on the way to OKC, has a huge hog problem. I think we are going to try to get after them there this spring.

Hope you get home safe Doug. We were just ready to get out of the wind. Hope it laid down and you got to actually hunt. It was brutal for our hunt.

Curtis was a good host and I will definatly be back.

Thanks for postin up my pics jim..I'm still trying to get settled back here at the house.

I loosed an arrow also at a javie and a rabbit, but both proved too quick for me!

Although I left a bit early to try to beat the ice, I had a GREAT time!  Met some great people, ate some spectacular viddles, and saw territory that I'd never stepped foot in before.  I saw critters and plants that I'd only seen on Wild America and in books.

I loved every minute of this trip (except for the temperature dipped...) and I plan on coming back in October and hunt the heat.

Doug77, hope you and your daughter got home safely. Sorry I didnt' call you back last night, had to spend time with the girlfriend...I didn't exactly tell her I was leaving on this trip.

Curtis, thanks so much for your hospitality! Looking foreward to doing it again.

Cameron

Thanks for posting guys! It was a sincere pleasure to host a hunt with so many great guys and gals.

Week 1 was as brutal as it gets in West Texas. Before the hunt started I was seeing animals around every bend. THEN came the rain and wind to 55 miles per hour. We had one good day and then the wind gusted to 65 miles per hour, sending me from my camper to my truck. I truly thought the camper was going to flip.

Between the wind and the rain the animals seemed to have vanished from the earth. This really gets my hackles up and makes me work harder to get clients on game but sometime Mother Nature wins out. There were only a couple groups of javelina spotted on week 1. Those who went after hogs did well but the javelina just wouldn't cooperate.

Week 2 had the rain puddles drying up and the wind actually returned to normal. This brought out the javelina and the hogs and everything went back to normal. Two evenings had 10 hunters afield with only one hunter not sighting or shooting animals. I think there were 7 javelina stuck and I lost count on hogs. Unfortunately, there seems to be some difficulty bring down the javelina. They are very fast and are incredibly hard to hit correctly at 15 yards or more. I try and advise all hunters to wait till they are inside of 10 yards but adrenaline normally wins the battle and arrows start flying at 20. Oh well, it's all a learning experience when we are in the woods. I'm sorry that the learning curve is riddled with painful events such as woundings.

I thoroughly enjoyed each and everyone that attended this hunt and I do hope to see you all again in the future. It looks as though the 1st javelina hunt for October of 2010 will sell out really quickly. Thank you all sincerely for choosing to hunt with 7th Age Bowhunting, LLC.!! Your business and your friendships are greatly appreciated!!!!!CK

Got some now time to talk about the hunt with my 8 year old daughter Mattie. Texas proved to be  big for a 8 year old girl. Most nights on stand when it started getting dark she got real worried about the coyotes howling and wondering if we could find our way back to the truck after dark but I finallay convinced her we would be OK and after that she had a great time. About the only other problem I had was when she stepped on my quiver full of arrows and broke them all and had to go back to the truck to get more. My fault I guess for leaving the lay on the ground with an 8 year old stumbling around. We saw a coyote about 20 yards away and 2 javies about 5 yard's away, didn't bring the javie home but thats another story. She spent time tring to shoot some quail and seeing how far she could shoot her arrows down the roads and picking up lots of old bone's, stones and other treasures that only an 8 year old can see. All said and done we had a great time together and Curtis was great at helping find some game. The weather was not the best so I guess I will have to go back next year and see what happens. Thank's to Jim for posting some of my pic's and also to a fine gentleman named Phillip Fields for giving Mattie a very nice kinfe.

Hope to see some of you guy's and gal's back at camp next year. It was a good time and nice meeting you all.

Also congrat's to a young man for getting his first big game kill with a recurve.

It was nice to meet you Curtis!
Unfortunately I was one of the ones in camp when the javies seemed scarce.  Hunted five days without seeing one and was to hard headed to switch over to chasing just hogs (really wanted one of the javies).  Some beautiful weather, with two wind storms mixed in and I left with rain coming.  A lot of days I was wishing for my 20 gauge or .223.  I seen hundreds of quail and loss count of the coyotes I saw.  I did see one nice young mulie buck and a few jack rabbits as well.
I can say that Curtis moved me around when I asked and did his best to put me where the javies should be and had been in the past, but hunting is hunting and the game doesn't always cooperate.
I can also say that I had a great time and shared camp with some very fine folks!  It was truely a pleasure and my thanks to all!
