Title: Snow is falling silently - But crunching all the Louder!
Post by: saumensch on January 28, 2010, 10:25:00 AM
Hi Gang,

as i attempted some stalks in the last days through snow that was between 4 inches and 2 feet deep, i came to wonder if it is at all possible to waltz silently in snow.
The constant crunching or creaking with every step i could not overcome, neither by placing my feet in ultra-slow-motion, neither by trying to drag them under the snow, nothing workd.

Some of you ground hunters have a method for stalking in snow? Or is it impossible?

Best wishes

saumansch,I don't have a good solution for you. Some snow conditions are impossible to move quietly in.Here, when it gets very cold, say 20 degrees F or much colder, the snow will be like a very dry powder and if there is no thawing,it can be very silent for stalking. If you have had freezing and thawing or if the temperatures are just at the freezing mark, you may have to use some sitting tactics for awhile,if that is possible.

Also, where I am the conditions constantly change so it often is just a matter of waitng a few days and things can get better.

I suspect that where you are,the snow conditions may stay for long periods of time?

"The snow is falling silently, but crunching all the louder;  perhaps you should stay in the house and have some ale and chowder!"

It's hard to sneak up on stumps when the snow is crunching like shredded wheat biscuits under your feet.  8^).

Noise is natural in the woods.  If you play the wind sometimes it will carry some noise away from game.  But like these guys said, sometimes stalking must wait until conditions are right.
