JAN. 27,2010...Hi everyone...I have been asked to do a "build along" from some members here on TradGang.com
So here we go. It starts with me cutting the shaft today here in south eastern Ohio. As you can see its a very nice straight shoot I found in the low land ... swampy area. (the one that starts in middle at bottom of pic) It looks to be around 55-65 # spine.

So I'll let it dry overnight and debark it tomorrow. I usually let the dry for a month or two. If You cut a bunch..... bundle them for drying (see Pic)
I'll debark tomorrow...so check each day now for new info. It will be added here at top of Topic so its easy to see all info I add. I'll put "update" date in TITLE each time I add.
See ya tomorrow for debarking ....Jeff
P.S. I'll have a free drawing here for arrow when its finished !!!!Hope You win it !!! I'll put everyones name into drawing that responds to this topic!
JAN. 28,2010 UPDATE INFO
Ok ..The Red Osier shaft is 32 inches long. I'll keep it as long as I can on this arrow.
First pic is fresh cut shaft. I took off bark with a pocket knife.(2nd pic) Comes off real easy when fresh. If you dry first it will take a little more work ...but its still easy. Get it downd to fresh wood. You can them trim off to profile of shaft where there is a small branch or blemish. If you have a small belt sander it works great! I keep checking straightness too. I then burnished the shaft sufface with a thick shot glass. Gives it a nice finish.
Thats about it for today. Next We will cut out the nock and fit the wood shaft for "stone head" !!!

OK .....MORE INFO WILL BE ON PAGE 3.
well thats very interesting roll on thursday i cant wait to see how this turns out as i have had a go at making some myself a good buddy sent me some river cane and i did not do to bad if i may say so myself.
Jeff
Really looking forward to this. Thanks for taking the time to do it, from your posts so far I'm sure this will turn out sweet!!
I'll do my best to make it interesting !!!! :)
can you add my name now for the drawing?
Also what spin do you think they will come out as?
I'll put everyones name in the drawing that responds to this topic. The shaft will be around 55-65 # I think ? I'll spine it later.
Should be a good build along! Thanks for taking the time my friend!
Will it be totally primitive with sinew, stone point, etc.? very interesting. I always wondered how the native americans found so many straight shafts.
This will be good I have made some in the past I likes using chock cherry.
What kinda shoots are they?
This is going to be interesting. You must have made tons of these things to be able to estimate the spine by looking at the shoot.
this is neat i tried some making some cane aarrows once. dindt do well
is that willow. loyd
Very interesting. I've never made any primitive arrows or seen anyone make em.
I'll be watching this one!
Always wanted to know how it's done from scratch!
Add my name as well, if it's not to much trouble!
And if the shipping is much, I'll compensate!
This ought to be a great thread. Thanks for taking it on.
who was it who said something like "for a bow any old stick will do, but for arrow, heap big work"? ... looking forward to this, thanks for the primitive arrow build along
Looking forward to this!!!
This is gonna be great!!!! can't wait.
thats awsome, i would like to know what kind of wood that is. i just picked some river cane and gonna try it. i cant wait to see this completed.
Really looking forward to this!!! What kind of shoots are those?

Ditto
Great start. Keep it going
I'll be keep my etes on this one.
Keep reading TOPIC on page one ...1 !!! It will tell everything as it goes on. I will add to it there so its one place for all info. I'll change date on title too so you will know when it was posted ...Jeff
Got to try that one of the days, keep going
What diameter is the shaft with and without the bark?
Add my name too. Stuff like this interests me. I have made a few cane arrows and I have some sourwood shoots that I have started on but thats it. I'm a beginner at this and I like to see how different people do theirs. I believe that you can learn something different from different people doing the same thing...if that makes sense. LOL
doesnt look like willow, dont think willow would be stiff enough.( what kind o stick? )
What he is using is Red osier I do believe.
yes...... RED OSIER !!!
I'm in! Been building my own shafts for a long time but not with this kind of start. Mill mine out of straight grained lumber.
Like the looks of this build-along. I am getting some red osier shafts in a couple of weeks and will be looking to turn them into my hunting arrows for the coming season.
Ok...Guys Got a "PROBLEM" I can't put more than 8 pics on ...will not let me !!! WHAT DO I DO ????? I tried to add info and pics today. I really would like to keep it on page one all together. Would make it easier to keep tracked of.,,,Jeff
next set just tell Us what page... If it still doesn't let you post pix send them to me and I'll post them.
Yeah, just put info on continuing page on the end of post #0 :)
Just don't stop posting ^^

Ok I'm back !!!
Lets start cutting out nock. I like to use a dental lab die cutting saw. You can find them on popular buy site with 100 blades for around $35. There very sharp blades and cut nice and fast. So be carefull using them.
I like to cut about 3/8 inch deep nocks. Look at your string to see how wide you want to cut it. (you can snug it up later if it gets to lose...I'll show you how later in build along)
Ok ...now I use a small dia. chainsaw sharpner file to round off the groove
(http://i842.photobucket.com/albums/zz343/getstonedpimitivebowhunt/cuttingnockout3.jpg)
Take some fine sand paper to it now to make it final shape you like
Now lets get to cutting out slot for stone point !!!
First set head on top of shaft to see how wide to cut.
You can mark it if you want. Also ...mark how deep to. I like wood to go a little past the notch area. (You'll see in pics)
When you cut out don't over do it. I like a snug fit but not to tight. Take your time....You can file, knife and sand groove to get final fit.
One more thing...be careful ... you can cut yourself easy here with stone point (see pic ...ouch !!!)
When you get close to final fit spin arrow shaft on hand to check that point is on straight and true. You'll learn the proper fit the more you build. Its a little tricky to balance head sometime because of shape and thickness of head. Try to get tip even spin on top. Look down point and shaft at the tip to nock. Its a "feel" you'll get with time.
Good luck ... Next we will mount point !!!!
More info tomorrow !!!
Don't know that I'll ever do this, but it is sure fun to follow along - thanks!
Tim
.....Thanks , Tim I do it for guys like You ....Jeff
UPDATE !!!!!!!
Tommorow ...WE will mount Obsidian head.
This arrow will be Semi-primitive as I will use glue on head and artifical sinew. For most of you its a better way to start off making a primitive arrow. I will in future go through 100% primitive way ...but for this build along we will do it this way !
See Ya tommorow .... Jeff
Sorry Guys.....I'm having trouble with my camera. It might be a day or to till I get a new one and post pics and info again... I will be back to finish this "BUILD ALONG" Thanks ...Jeff

Looks good so far. I am wondering where did you get the obsidian head or did you made it? That is one sharp looking rock!
you wouldn't happen to know the latin name of this plant would u.? I live in mo and ppl call plants different things here. Lol. I don't know If it even grows here?
Please Add Me to the hat!! I Love that Arrowhead!! Beautiful Colors!!
Randy Eason head !!! I'll get the arrow going soon ! CRAZY WEATHER MESSED ME UP !!!
I live in AR and have 9" of snow in my front yard. I know what you mean about the crazy weather. I can't wait to get to the final parts of the primitave arrow, that is where I have trouble.
...soon ..Brother !!!! Thanks ...Jeff
Looking good so far. Do you think Salt Cedar shoots would work for this project? They are about the same color as what you are using. Looking forward to seeing the finished product. Thanks for starting this post. good remedy for "cabin fever".
Shawn ..I'll look it up ! Head to the lowland/swamps. Look for any solid shoot that is straight. Try them after dried. You just might find the right shaft of your area...Jeff
Jon .... cut a few and try them. want to trade a few. fun to try something different
Is Randy a member here? This is some crazy weather we are looking at another 10-18" of snow today.
OK ...I'm back !!!! :)
Today heres some pics of the head being mounted !!!
