Guys, I am thinking of skinning my bow with cottonmouth. There was a guy in the trad bow section about a month ago that had a schafer like this. I can't remember his name. He had pics up but are deleted. If anyone has pics this would be great or if anyone knows the person that I am referencing, I could contact him and see if he could send me a pic. Thanks
Spurs, I think a gentleman on this site that goes by the handle "hogdancer" has a bow that has cottonmouth skins on the limbs. You might try and pm him from the directory.
Thank you. Will do
Bob Morrison put these on (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/bsteelman70/bow/P7010012.jpg)

Thanks Benny, those are awesome. Did you send him the skins or did he have them for you?
Oh man this is gonna be good!
Yup time to get out the bib!!
Bob had them on hand.To mean of a snake for me to deal with. I do have a copperhead stapled to a broad that I need a match for. Com'on spring.
Benny

Left Eastern Diamondback right Cotton mouth for comparison.
God Bless, Pierre
These are awesome! Just the couple of pictures have made my mind up on skinning my bow. Now just what snake to use. The bow is a black widow Kingwood PSAX. I know copperhead would look good. I think cottonmouth might. Decisions, Decisions.
I think Will is right. I am going to change my post title too all skinned bows. Hopefully this will broaden the horizon, and give us some eye candy.

Sad to say, this bow is now deceased. Western diamondback skins looked pretty cool, though,
Wow!! I have been off-line too long. Kevin Dill unbelievable schafer with copperheads! I see that you have both Morrison and Schafer. From a shooting standpoint, what is your favorite? Both lookers for sure.
And Froggy, yes this is the bow that I was looking for. Thanks for posting. That bow really gave me fits when it was in the trad bow section. I don't know what was worse, not being able to obtain it or loosing the pic to drool over.
Mswickard those prairie rattlers might be something to look into for my color wood. Wander if they are as hard to come by as copperheads?
Centaur, that is sad to say that the bow is deceased. It is definately a looker.
Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to post a pic or two. Maybe this thread will stay going a while. I get down right excited every time that I get online to just see this thread. Thanks, Tom
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0003-4.jpg)This is a 1994 Robertson, the bow is pretty unused and stored properly, but the snake skins are coming out, what kind of glue can I use?
Felix, you can use titebond 3 glue. But it looks like you better peal them off and refinish the bow.
Phil there are no tracks of glue on the limbs,Do you think I have to peel them off anyway?
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0013-2-1.jpg)Another Shawnee with recurve limbs and western rattles
you could try to glue them back, and if it doesn't work properly then you just peel them off.
Felix,
If you peel them off, soak them in clean water prior to putting them back on the bow, it will rehydrate them and make it much easier to put back on. Be very careful peeling them off or you might tear them. Yes, Phil is correct Tite Bond 3 should work great.
Thank my friend, yes the skins look pretty dry after all those years, maybe I had to put some wax on them during these years.
Once you put them back on and the glue is dry, tape off the limbs and spray the skins with a few coats of clear poly and you should be good to go.
I'll do Danny.
Here's a self-bow I made using the belly of a Saharan rock viper; slight pattern, but it is different on top vs. bottom limbs:

The prairie Rattlers are easy to come by. I got mine off of a guy up in S. Dakota. Don't have the info with me but I'll see if I can dig it up.

kevin dill, great pic! gotta love those skinned bows they are nice looking.
Those are some really nice looking bows. I've only put skins on my self bows.

How big of a snake(s) is needed to skin a bow? Will one large snake do both limbs or is two snakes needed? Those bows look awesome, and even though I wouldn't skin my Super Kodiak yet, I would do it if and when it gets dinged up.
Brian, I talked to black widow. I have a 60 inch psax. They told me I would need two snakes about 25-26 inches long a piece. One for each limb. Unless you might find a 60 inch snake, you could probably do both. I hope you see him first lol!
In my case I wanted copperheads, and a 26 incher is rather large. Hope this helps.
Tom

I will post pics when it arrives.

Great looking bows guys!!
A question....I just got my first "Skinned Bow" what are your thoughts on strapping a bow quiver onto skin covered limbs? I just got a Morrison ILF and I'm pretty sure I can not use the limb bolt quiver on that bow however I don't want to chance messing up those awesome "wide band watersnake skins".
Looking forward to all thoughts and advise. :wavey: :coffee:
I use a Thunderhorn Lynx quiver that uses the boa straps, I think thats what Thunderhorn calls there strap. I have a picture of my set up on here on page 3. The quiver is on a Morrison ILF like yours. It hasn't done any damage to the skins and I don't beleave it will.
Ryan
L.E. - I've used my BOA quiver on the skinned limbs many times without any adverse effect. I would be cautious though and let your finish cure for a long while first.
My finish is tru-oil. These are up to about 20 coats on the skin side now. Not that you would have to go that extreme, but I like the look it gives to the feathered edges and fully filling in the scale pockets etc. I recently put a few more coats on, then did a satin poly over the whole works. Looks great and so far so good. One coat a day with light light sand or 0000 wool for a week or two and you feel like a pro. ;)
The real nice part about the tru-oil is being able to touch-up or fill in a scratch or rub without refinishing a large section of bow.

L.E. you should be ok with a quiver and those skins, like Ryan and Gordy I have been using a strap on quiver, a Kanati), with no ill affects...

Black Widow PSA III with Diamondback skins
I'm toying with skinnin my original Dwyer LB.
Can any of you guys tell me if the prairie rattle has a green tint to it like the others ?
The bow looks to be walnut like riser with curly maple limbs, and I just don't care for the light color of the limbs.
Would appreciate some recommendation on a dark skin ... maybe brownish...without that gree tint.
Thanks !

Thanks guys. That is a good comparison between the Cottonmouth and the Eastern Diamondback, but I have to say I like the Copperhead. All are nicely done.

TTT.
I was going to start a thread but made good use of the search function.
Hope there are some new pics to share.
I am not a huge fan of skins on my own limbs but I like looking at them. It seems there are a lot of rattler and copper head skins. I saw one picture form "MINT" with awesome skins.
Anyone have Blacksnake skins on their bows? I tend to find them a lot.
I love the way snake skins look on bows!! I don't have any myself, but I hope someday I will. Awesome pics everyone.
WOW all beautysssss,,,
Great looking skins.I wonder where they get copperhead snakes that big.I have been around those snakes all my life her in the south and I have never seen any longer than 16".
Those are some great pics guys.
Here in Illinois I think about every snake you have shown is protected. I wonder what a CPO would do if he checked you? I am not trying to be a dog here but has anyone had that experience????
I love these snake skin threads. Glad i dug this one up. Any more pics???

Here are a few that this thread made me buy. Lol. I only have the sheephorn left. I havd definately got the bow bug. I sold the shawnee last week, and sold the copperhead ilf limbs and the striped riser. I did this to make room for more projects. Enjoy. I had to edit the first post because some of my photos didn't resize properly.
I'm SO going to be looking for copperheads in the yard every chance I get. What an awesome look. Would go well on the new T/D.
