Title: String Material Question
Post by: zinndl on January 27, 2010, 11:01:00 AM
I want to learn to make my own flemish strings; I have a GN Bushbow that takes FF and an older recurve that wont handle fast flight.
How much performance etc. would I lose on the bushbow if i switched to B50 string material? With the cost of FF I'd be tempted to just use the B50 on both. I'd love to hear alot of opinions on the pros & cons of both.

You probably won't loose a lot of performance.  The main advantages to using a FF type material, in my opinion, is the increased durability, lack of stretch and creep, and reduced hand shock.  In the long run, I believe it's actually cheaper to use a good FF type material, because the string will last longer, and you can use fewer strands so you get more strings per spool of material.

With proper tuning and the right strand count, a FF type string can be made just as quiet or quieter than dacron.  The only "down" side to FF type materials is some bows aren't made for them, and the added up-front cost.

Chocolate or Vanilla. I shoot Dacron out of most of my bows. Very little loss of speed and a lot quieter for me.
