Got a whole bunch of red osier and wild rose shoots I'm in the process of making into arrows. My question is; some of the osier has small stems growing out of it. Nothing big, and they're easy to trim. Will these make servicable arrows, or should I toss these for safety's sake. Thanks guys...
Stems on the side are common. I used sandpaper to reduce the little knots left behind.

Have fun, Chris!

Sometimes I feel like I should just go back to carbon, Killdeer. That thought goes away quickly, however...

...... I like a few stems and flaws. It makes for a good "LOOK" !!! See my other topics on "primitive" arrows. I'll be putting on a BUILD ALONG soon !!! ...Jeff
I have a small belt sander that makes them smooth fast. But by hand works good too. (I do a bunch)
"Carbon" is so.............. HI-TECH!! :scared: :scared: :archer:
What? Carbon is older than dirt.
For More on PRIMITIVE ARROW BUILDING...go to my new topic ....birth of a Primitive Hunting Arrow...build along in PowWow Thanks ...Jeff
You want the shoots with small stems on them. For shoot arrows you want to use second year growth. The first growth year the shoot has leaves along the shoot. The second year these small stems come from below the leaf scar from last year. First year growth will make an arrow but usually they are flimsy and spine light. Second year growth makes a stable, heavy arrow that spines well.
