Title: WI Turkey tags are out...
Post by: BowHuntingFool on January 26, 2010, 11:18:00 AM
Looks like a spring tom with the Longbow is out of the question! I got a tag and my 14 year old son didn't, what a bummer! Now, I gotta get in line for the remainder 3900 for zone 2 and TRY and get him a tag so he can hunt the youth hunt and the last period... or I transfer mine to him again and he uses mine. Ugghhh....

Did you put in as a group?  If so he should have gotten one unless his application was filled out wrong. It's worth the call to DNR to check things out.

No, didn't really know about the group thing Bruce! I'm bumming now!

Have they posted the unsold tag quantities? I'm curious which seasons are available for Units 1 and 3.

Jason, there are tags for the last 3 hunts for zone 1 and 3, a lot as a matter of a fact for the last 2 weeks, 20,000 or so for each...

Thanks, Joe. I see there are only 206 available tags for third season in unit 1. I know where I'll be when they go on sale.

Yeah, me too! I don't think the last 2 season in zone 1 even sold out last spring! I wish zone 2 was like that, I have no idea where to hunt in Zone 1...

Man I'd really be bummed if I couldn't hunt turkey's in my home state every year!

Gotta be terrible not knowing weather you can or can't for a while...only to get worse when you don't draw! That would kill me!!

Is the population low or is that just the way it's always been in WI.???

Curt, there is talk of changing it soon, everyone that applies for a tag will receive one, kinda OTC if you will! Our Turkey population is very strong in my eyes, they are everywhere! I'm just glad I can transfer my tag to my son so he can hunt if all else fails. We do have left over tags for the later season hunts, just not to many in my zone where I hunt on state land! I need to find and scout some land on the west side of the state in zone 1 for more options!

I've never heard of this for a resident.  If the population is strong then it shouldn't be a problem.  This usually happens to the nonresidents, very unusual.

Right  now... we have 6 seasons, each season starts on a wednesday and goes to the sunday, then, monday and tuesday are no hunting days, then wednesday - sunday as so on... I love the season break up but just the lottery drawing sucks!

It's meant to even out hunting pressure to help insure quality hunt.  Has worked well in my opinion.  Turkey's have taken a hit where I hunt in central Wi. Last couple of winters have been really bad with corresponding bad nesting weather. We've also had an increasing Fisher population that I think take out many eggs. I've applied and got a permit ever since the 1st drawing in 1984 but often don't get 1st choice of period,

When folks apply, they get to state their preference for time period.   Most folks ask for the first or second season and those are filled quickly.  However, applicants can also select up to four other seasons in which they would take a tag.  People who say they will take a tag in one of these other seasons almost always get a tag.  And, as Joe pointed out, there are thousands of tags available for the last two seasons.  It's not a matter of not getting a tag, it just may not be in the time period one most wants.

Seriously BH Fool, our DNR is so f'ed up. Both my son and I didn't get a permit for zone 1. I think I had season 2 as my #1 pref and he had season 3 as his #1 pref. I didn't check my other son as I didn't have his dnr number handy.

Let's see, ruin our deer herd and promote an over population of turkeys - brilliant.

Looks like I'll be settling for the 4th season bonus tag.

OK - Ignore my last post - lmao!

BH Fool - I just did the "online chat" function on the DNR website and she said the results were not posted online yet - even though online it said "no" by the "permit issued" section.

Both myself and my 2 sons got the time zones we requested.

Boy that's confusing!  Just checked mine and it said "No" by the "permit issued" section.  Hope they told your right Tim!

Smoke:

Just go to "contact us" and connect to online chat. She said the "no" is there because it isn't posted up on the web. She just asked my name and DOB and gave me my season.

Pretty quick to condemn the DNR aren't you inn8?  Glad you got the units/time period you asked for.  A lot of folks can't even fill out the application correctly.  Then they blame the DNR when they don't get a permit.

Yes Orion, very quick - lol. I think the whole turkey permit thing is crazy, especially the Dec. 10th deadline when someone really isn't thinking about turkeys at all.

I see way too many people not get permits because they apply for too early of a season or they forget the deadline.

I retracted my post - lol, but I don't have much sympathy for our dnr.

I was worried as I had a "no" status on my login, but after contacting them via the chat webpage (thanks for the suggestion and link!) it turns out I got the zone and time I wanted!  2B!   :D    Hopefully the snow will be off the ground, I had a great time a couple years ago in this period!  Now to see if I can get a lateseason bonus tag!

Can't wait for spring now!

I wish the DNR would do away with the 6 seasons.  And have one season like the fall hunt.  Sometimes I think the DNR has the Deer and Turkey numbers turned around.  Plenty of Turkeys, you can even find them up North in Iron Cty.

IMO, the nice thing about the six seasons is it spreads out the hunter density.  If we didn't have them, 90% of the hunters would be out the first week of the season, and few thereafter.  It would be just as crowded as the deer gun season.  Now we maybe don't need six seasons, maybe three or four would work, but I wouldn't want to see it go to a single season in the spring.  It works in the fall because people are also hunting a bunch of other stuff, deer, ducks, upland birds and other small game.

Orion:

My only problem is that the success rates really go down as the seasons progress. This would be too problematic I'm sure for them, but 3 seasons -each being 2 weeks but staggered.

I.E. Group 1 (season A,F) Group 2 (B,E), and Group 3 (C,D). That way every group would at least have a pretty decent week. For those of you not from Wisconsin, A-F are the six weeks of season with A starting in April and F going into May. Each season is Wed - Sunday.

What I don't like is that if you have something going on during the weekend of your one weekend hunt - you miss half your season. Many people, including myself, just can't take off more than one, maybe two days during the week.

Of course, with a system like this, the DNR prob. couldn't make extra money off of all of the bonus tickets.

I have to agree with badgerArrow.  Though what Orion offers seems ok, the bureaucracy isn't worth it.  And don't forget it costs us and that money would be better spent elsewhere.  For example, last year the permit system was screwed up and the IT contractor had to give back $100Ks to the state - What did it cost that the fine was that big?

I also believe hunters would spread out - over the whole period - and being able to pick and choose days vs. being stuck with the 5 days you get, would make hunting more enjoyable.  The latter would outstrip the downside of some pressured days.

Also think of the rut, I don't feel the pressure of other whitetail hunters and I know most of you are out there all at the same time.

I agree with Jerry on this one, I sure hope they don't go to a 6 week season, I really like the way the season structure is now!

I agree with Jerry and Joe. I've enjoyed the variety of periods as Spring unfolds from hunting in snow to gathering morals in May. Each period offers challenges but isn't the journey worth it? I've had success in all seasons since 84.

LOL - awesome photo Joe. When I have a May season, I tell people I'm morel hunting with a shotgun on my back.

I could careless about turkey hunting once the morels come out - they are all I can think about. I had a few 10# days last year and that is good for the limited amount of farms I can hunt them on.

I'm working on a 500 acre farm in SE Mn, but can't get permission on it as the farmer's kids hunt them 1 or 2 days a season - it is killing me because I think it is a gold mine.

I like having the woods all to myself when bowhunting turkeys. I agree, I like it the way it is.

I have actually had some of my best action and shot some of my biggest birds in the later seasons. It's just a great time of the year to be in the woods. Especially when those morels are out!

I also like the 6 week season. I've put in for the 4th period and have never failed to get a tag since 1990. And now you can buy extra tags for 5th and 6th periods. Joe i love that picture of the morals.

The problem with 1 season is pressure...you'll have ALL of us chasing birds at the same time.

Be happy you have SOMETHING good.  The area I was hoping to hunt in Mn has had some over 'managing' on turkeys AND deer...now it's not worth the nonresident prices to hunt either, though I still do only because I have since day one.

A free for all is not a good option, if you havent hunted MO in recent years you should!  We started hunting this longbefore the 3rd week was added...shotgun starts are not always the greatest thing invented.

Not to mention you can draw 1 tag AND buy a surplus tag for a later hunt, 2 birds yay!

Yeah, the best part of the 6 seasons is the Monday/Tuesday no hunting days! It gives the birds a break and a chance for guys to do some last minute scouting if needed without molesting others hunts!

I can't speak for Wi but the turkey hunting gets better as the season goes in Pa. We kill the biggest birds usually the last week of the season. The hens start nesting and the goblers start to get easy.

That's a cool pic Joe.  My dad and I were drawn for Zone 1 Season 1 (first choice)  I like the 6 week season.  Reduces pressure.  Good luck fellas.
