Title: carbon xpress heritage shaft help
Post by: trick00 on January 25, 2010, 04:14:00 PM
Need some help figuring what shaft to use on a 60# 28" recurve, my draw length is 28" and my arrows will be 30" with a 175 gr broadhead. The carbon xpress chart bases everything on a 125 gr point. I think im borderline needing the 350's but not sure. Any help here will be appreciated. Thanks

Go with the 350s and add a 50 grain brass insert up front with your 175 grain broad head and you will be good.  I shoot the 350s with a 100grain insert and a 125 grain out of a 68# at 29".  But they also fly fantastic out of my 60#er aswell.

My guess would be a 250 Heritage with a 175 gr. point,it has a .373 spine. For me I don't know what length my carbon will end up at.I pick the carbon size at full length with the point weight I want to use and trim and tune from there until I achieve the dynamic spine I want. And the length they end up at is where I leave them.

The 250's will work the 350's will probably be too stiff. A gold tip 5575 with 175 grain head and some weight behind the insert (50-75grains) will work too.LCH

This looks like a job for Stu's Calculator!...

On first blush I would be inclined to think a 250 Heritage would work, but I could be wrong...

trick00, do a search for stu millers dynamic spine calculator and it lets you figure out the dynamic spine needed for bow and for different shafts based on different variables.

A lot would depend on the cut of the sight window, -3/16 is going to take a lot different spine than +1/8.

my bows are 64-60# recurves and the 250 with 100 gr brass insert and 200 gr points at 30" is the way to go, fly like darts. I agree, the 350s will be too stiff.

Here is some info that may help  in tuning your arrows:

I'm currently tuning some CX Terminator Selects 45/60 for my Wapiti TD 60@28 and a LaClair Grayling Spirit 62@29 (59"at my draw length).  The CX Terminator selects spine around 0.397.  My draw length is 28inches and the only differences between these two bow is the Wapiti TD is cut to center and the GS is not and the Wapiti uses B50 and the GS is D97.  Based on my measurements both having the same type hair sideplate, the wapiti is at +1/8" and the GS is around +1/4".

So, I've found out that I can shoot the same shaft set up in both bows even though I need a lower dynamic spine for the GS bow. I'm cutting my shafts to 29.876, 160 grain point w/ 75 grain steel adapter, CX insert and nocks w/ 3-5" sheild cut feathers.  Total arrow weight around 545 grains.  Bareshafting revealed sightly weak.

USing Stu calc was really spot on.  Biggest factor is how the sight window is cut.  So comparing I'd use the 250 shafts.

If you need any help let me know.

Mike

I shoot 250's cut to 30.5 out of my Roy Hall t/d recurve, 65# @ my 29" draw. 200gr tips & they fly real nice. I agree th 350's will be too stiff.

I shoot 60" 60#@28" BW . CX Heritage 250's 29.5" 100gr. insert 3-5" shield cut feathers.I get good arrow flight with anything from 125 to 175gr. points/ broadheads. Good heavy arrow that flys good and hits hard. Hope this helps, Thomas3

150's or you will be over spined-too stiff IMO.

I shoot 56lbs from my recurve and I have my 250's cut at 30". The 250's will put you in the neighborhood. You might get away with the 350's, but if so you'd better like heavy arrows because you'll need lots of weight up front to soften them.  I'd try to buy a single shaft of each size if I felt like I was between sizes - that's worked really well for me in the past.

250's for heavy heads, you might be able to get away with 150's if you keep the front light and shafts cut an inch past your draw length.
I'm shooting Heritage 150's cut to 29 inch shafts with 200 up front out of a 51@27 longbow. Seems to be right on for this draw weight.

250's for me, cut at 30", with 250 gr. up front....out of a 62# recurve

I think 350's will be too stiff for you

Ditto on the 250's.  I shoot them out of similar set ups.

I shoot cx 250s out of my 60 lb longbow with 50gr insert and 145 to 200 grain broadheads.  The biggest varialbe is how your shelf is cut, either + or - of center. dino

My 60# @ 29" longbow likes the full length 250s just fine.
