Post by: Onions on January 25, 2010, 03:36:00 PM
I had a moose hunt to Alaska planned for this season, however this weekend two guys had to back out. UURRGGHHH!!!
So....I am onto plan B, looking for a caribou outfitter in either, Newfoundland,Quebec, or Labador.
Any Suggestions

chris, I went two times with Twin Rivers, once in '99 and again in '03. Saw some caribou the first trip. 9 of us in camp and and 6 caribou were taken with bows. Three of the guys opted to use the rifle on the last day and killed 5 more bulls. We all had shots, but we didn't hit the "migration".
On my 2003 trip,(same week as '09) there were a total of 12 bowhunters in camp and 24 bulls were taken in 4 days. We hit the time just perfect and saw several thousand caribou as opposed to a 100 or so in '99. Good camp and staff and good meals. Extremely good meals on the first hunt. We were into bears in both camps and a couple were taken.
The price has gone up considerably since my trips. If you go to the members video section here on tradgang and look up videos and slide shows under Bolin and/or Hammenstafer you can see some bulls and get a feel for the landscape.
I suggest you also do a search for a recent post on caribou. I believe it was Three Rivers Lodge in Labrador. I have heard nothing but great things about this operation and if I remmber correctly, John, Biggie, Bill and a few others here shared their experiences in the that thread. If you have any questions I can help you with, just pm or email me. Mike

Be very carefull choosing outfitters in areas that totally rely on the migration, like most of Quebec. The migration routes have changed over the years and places that were once hot camps are now devoid of caribou. Talk to people who have been with the outfitter the past few years to see if the outfitter is getting his clients into caribou. Also check and see if the action is hot the whole season of just sporadically through the season. I suggest looking for a camp that always has some caribou around regardless of the migration so you have something to look at and hunt if the migration is off.
