Very nice daniel from horseback you can approach wild boars very easyly.
That is awesome. Great looking horse.
Nice. I've never done that. What are the specs on your bow. Is your horse trained for any other sports, like reining or dressage?
That is way cool ! I wonder if I could get my mule to do that.

Pretty cool! Great pics as always. Looks like fun.
Looks like fun. Ever since I saw Vinson Miner do that at a shoot, I've wanted to try it. I had horses but no longer do. Maybe one day. Good going man.
Wow
And who said archers aren't athletes!
both you and the horse look fit!
Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Glenn
I do kinda...I try and make my horse stand still so I can shoot...LOL
Pretty cool...I watched some mounted archers at the the horse expo in Albany Oregon last year...Hopefully they will be back this year...

Good Form also! I think I'll try it on my bike :D . Pictures to come. :scared:

that's so awesome
My mules pretty smart, but it might be hard to find a horse big enough for him to ride.

Man, the Sorrel and the Bay are beautiful! That is just too cool. I want to come along. Can I bring my Burro?
MATT
Yononindo,
Is that a Tennesee Walker you are on?
Hey, what is with the split finger and not 3 under?
If I tried to combine my archery with my horsemanship it could only go bad; both horse and rider would be in jeopardy.
Classy my current spoiled quarter horse - shes been shooting with me for a while now and still learning.

Taken about 4 years ago on a app/pony cross named Mr. Pony. He was a fast little thing even with my heavy rear on him. Walking in the parade to the arena.
This could be the coolest thread I've ever seen! Can you imagine riding a horse next to the great bison and harvesting one amazing creature?!
Wow!!!!!! That is awesome!
Thats cool!
I have chased wild hog down and shot them from a galloping horse, and spear hunted on horseback for hog - a bison is a tad more dangerious as they are plain mean and out weigh a horse 2 to 1. But yeah it would be a fun experiance!!!
I once chased a deer over open pasture into the woods - but did not take a shot, more wanted to see if i could get in range and a firing solution with it - i did and could but did not shoot it.
Dave
Man you look comfortable on a horse Daniel.
I guess I am next hey. I will have to take some pics - I have logged with my horse banjo and chased black bears and I have shot off him while standing but never moving....He's a left brain introvert and doesn't have mujch GO in him..but I will work on a canter....
He is such a great bush horse (tons of bush sense and will eat what a mosse eats). Will walk 30 miles...just doesn't like going fast...his nature....suits me fine in the bush.
Well more to learn...better get him good at leg aids EH!!!!!!..
We have to get together and do some hunting and fishing and horses...that's all I can say.
Here's a pic of us getting ready to go - Five days worth of food and camping gear - bow, arrows, machete and a scatter gun.

Hello Muskoxman,
What about this one ??
4 year old Noriker stallion. A very good carrier.
Good to know, that there are still some people out there, with a good sense of humor.
By the way, I like the pic of your mule. Got any others ??
Daniel
I know You need a good bomb proof Horse to shot off them (standing or moving). What is some of
You're training you do with your horses to get them not to buck/throw/dump You off them as you shoot your bow?
Hey Daniel - nice horse - saw you breaking him in on youtube (got a great buck for a big horse.
BUT "NO BIT"...I love that...most ppl think a bigger bit is what you need to CONTROLL A HORSE.
What they need is a "BIT OF SAVVY" ;)
SAVVY
Jer Bear
Nice horse, and I see you got a new Samick Lightning as well :)
Do you know of Trophybow from Youtube?
I think he subscribes to your videos there.
He is also breaking in a horse for archery and spearthrowing!
It's not an easy job, I presume...
Thanks for sharing!
-SveinD-
Hey Daniel,
That is a stout looking horse your astride, but he probably wouldn't want my mule mounting him, in more ways than one Ha Ha
(http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn261/farnorthfarmboy/IMG_0071.jpg)
I've never shoot arrows off a horse but I had a good roping horse I could shoot a rifle off of.
John
Hey Sal - I do Parelli Natural horsemanship - I have been around horses for about 5 years and have learned so many things..so many.
Training:
The first thing to know when you are introducing ANYTHING NEW to a horse is some horse phycology.
"APPROACH and RETREAT" is the best thing for a horse...and US BY THE WAY.
ANYTHING I do with them I have to look at it in THEIR EYES....knowing that they are CLAUSTROPHOBICS - PANICAHOLICS - and their inate charateristi is to FLY FROM FEAR (RUN) and then turn and reaccess the danger.
Knowing this they need YOU to be a good leader. So many times we "WORK" with a horse instead of "PLAY" with a horse.
A horse needs "SAFETY" - "LEADERSHIP" - "COMFORT" - "FOOD".
To be a good leader we need to know this up front. They don't know the mailbox isn't going to KILL THEM....we do but they don't.
So many times I see ppl FORCE a horse to do something...anyone can force a horse, but what if you could make your idea his idea....hmmm
What if he would learn something and do it willingly. That's what I do as best I can...sometimes I screw up but that's learning.
Here's something to consider.....WHAT IF - you were afraid of heights. I come along and say "hey what's the big deal" and I go and stand near the edge of a cliff.....you see me as your leader and you slowly creep up to the edge and look over....you breath a HUGE SIGH of relief that you didn't DIE...and JUST WHEN you are getting comfortable I.....
PUSH YOU OFF THE CLIFF.....well that's what many people do with horses.
Horses will do just about anything if you JUST let them have the time to get CURIOUS and BRAVE instead of PUSHING them.
Take a tarp for instance.....we know it won't hurt them right.....but they don't and it makes alot of noise.
So if we TIE THE UP (which is common) or hold the lead rope REAL TIGHT AND SHORT...and just walk up to them with the tarp and start flinging it around...chances are they are going to PULL BACK and maybe hurt themselves or kick at you.
But in either case they are AFRAID.
BUT WHAT IF.....you had a LONG LEADROPE and had someone drag a tarp in front and away from you and your horse and you had your horse behind you leading him...
NOW YOU AS HIS LEADER.....were between him and the SCARY TARP. Then get the person to stop and you stop.....slowly as your horse gets more confident you shorten the lead rope - never more that ten feet though, but if he gets scared you let him drift a bit (don't hold him close) - 12 feet plus - I use a 22' leadrope for this kinda stuff.
Then have the person just drop the tarp and you walk by it (don't even look at the tarp as the leader you need to be CONFIDENT).....chances are the horse will go to the side of you that is opposite the tarp...that's ok.
Then you stop and if he wants to go investigate the tarp great if not..then I would stand on the tarp and let him circle me at a walk - 2 times max. Then turn him the other way and do this until the tarp is not a worry.
It's fun.....I do everything but let him get to the tarp - I PLAY THE GAME OF - "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED NEAR THE TARP". In no time he wants to see what it is..REALLY - his curiosity comes up and so will his confidence.
I do the same with guns.....start off at a distance with someone shooting a 22 say...we get closer and everytime he is a bit worried we retreat.....when he relaxes we get closer...keep repeating this until he relaxes...."hind leg cocked - head low - yawning - blowing out (the sound they do if we blow out between our lips - are all signs of him coming off adreniline.
When he is fine with that...start the same process with a shotgun or rifle at a distance.
They say you can shoot a gun off ANY horse.....ONCE.
I do the same with the bow as the tarp thing...
I would encourage anyone wanting to really become a horseman to take the Pat Parelli home study course.....IT"S WAY MORE THAN RIDING.
Jer Bear :bigsmyl:
Neet thread folks!
I think I would need the 20' lead just to get over my fear of the HORSE :biglaugh:
I've always been attracted to and afraid of horses. Cool as all get-out though!
hey Juan - you want to go to the
ATWOOD RANCH in california and see the parelli horses there.....these ppl are great. - if your interested in horses at all you should see if there is a Parelli demo going on anywhere near you...you will be impressed.
go here to look - actually everyone should go even if your not into horses.
http://www.parellinaturalhorsetraining.com/Parelli-Across-America
Jer
Daniel,
You truly lead a charmed life! :notworthy:
Oh....my buddy's wife has a little crush on you. :biglaugh:
Parelli Natural horsemanship, been doing some of his stuff with horse when I lived in New Jersey, when I was working at a stable.
Now that I'm back in Texas and once I get to work and find a nice stable near by I'm going to volunteer for stable rental. then I'll fine a nice Horse or 2 and start working them.
I'll get the Parelli books & DVD's. I want a Horse that I can shoot a bow from. Then when I can do all that. Go hog hunting from horse back..
Sal - you can shoot a bow off most any horse...Hate to say never and hate to say always, but USUALLY you can get them to do things with you if you go about the training keeping their dignity intact.
Now to chase hogs on one - well thats a new leadership level for sure...alot of trust there.
I remember Pat walking up to a mountain lion on a tether and that horse was absolutely calm...BECAUSE he trusted pat and he had done the proper and prior preparation to do exactly that
Horse and owner:
You need to know what kinda of horse you want (horsenality chart they have is great) and what kinda personality you are.
I would look at the horses at the ATWOOD ranch for sure - my next horse will be from there.
http://www.atwoodranchnaturally.com/
They are great ppl and they tech parelli to the young horses from the get go.....they like ppl - trailer load and if you actually go there they can set you up with a horse that will suit you and the horse.
good luck
Jer Bear
Jerry - Looks like your horse has shoes on, the next step you can do to respect your horse is to remove those shoes and let him go bare feet (more info on http://www.barefoothorse.com/ for example). I have a horse that has been shoed for 14 years, I thought he had bad hoofs and really needed shoes, but since he goes bare feet his hoofs are better than ever.
Phil
Already doing that now - started the last trim. Problem was none of the farriers here new how to do it. So one of the local guys took a course and is teaching us now 9those that are interested). Seems the winter is a good time to prepare them also.
Yeah i have been asking for about 3 years...nobody would touch it. Said these are not wild Mustangs and don't have the terrain etc. My horse is out on 160 acres and he paws alot anyway so it keep his feet naturally trimmed a bit.
going to take a bit of time to get the whiteline built up though.
Never ending learning cycle with horses though. The more you know the less you know ---you know...hmm
jer
Jerry, Parelli- Parelli who This is the order.
God - Dorrance brothers - Ray Hunt- Buck Branaham- then Dennis Reis LOL
I train horses on the side- goes back generations
www.blueroanhancocks.com (http://www.blueroanhancocks.com)
I have done mounted shooting but never shot my bows off of them.
I would use them to find the hogs first, then work on getting closer.
First things first... Get back to work and make some money. Then look for stables, then horse(s). Old Police horses would also be looked at. Since they are bomb proof and well trained to start with.
Plus, they would like the relaxed off duty and hunting/trail walks. There is one Horse I would love to have. My Wife worked/volunteered at a horse rescue and they had a Horse that didn't like Males. You could get 50 yards from her with Her running off or charging at you and wanting to hurt you. Only the Ladies could feed, water, walk and groom Her.
I went to pick up my wife and as I was talking to Her, She show me Margaret. She was on the other side of Her paddock. She saw me as I just stood next to the fence. As My wife was finishing up, Margaret started to walk up to me. Took Her about 20 minutes and Everyone hit the floor as I was rubbing Her head and eyes.
When She first got to mylestone rescue.

After a few years at Mylestone rescue.
I agree that there were many ppl ahead of Pat and he always says "what i am going to share with you is so old it's new again"
Pat says it all the time....he is just putting it out there where you can do it systematically at home if need be so we all don't have to take 30 years to learn it.
He credits his past mentors all the time. I think his heart is inthe right place and that's with the horse first.
I have Tom Dorances book "horsemanship through Feel"
It's where I started but I didn't have enough savvy to know what he was getting at "what the heck is feel anyway...I DO NOW
I thank Pat Parelli for making it easier for us to learn without being close to clinicians.
I pretty much have to do this on my own - nobody here teaches anything usefull and the closest clinicians are 1600-2400 miles away from the yukon and some of them - well they aren't so good.
I learn from video/reading and practical. There is NO SYSTEM that I have seen that compares to the Parelli system atleast I haven't seen it.
Is there other great horseman - YES - is there ones I can access easily - NO
I have seen some horse trainers come to the yukon - some good some bad (in my eyes only).
I watched a guy do a reining clinic - he was awesome, but his ground skills with this womans horse was less than desirable (yup i think a fella could do better is all if a fella was looking at the horses point of view).
I learned some things, but I wasn't very impressed on a bunch of things he was doing to get her horse all fired up and white in the eyes.
He got a different bit then she was using instead of getting the horse to learn to stop with her seat first...hmm maybe I am wrong there.
Then she asked him after the class to help her with trailer loading....have seen some ppl do it real smooth like and I have seen 40 foot ropes through the windows and three ppl - one pulling and two smacking the horse on the butt to get him in.....this fella wasn't much better...alot of undue force on the horse and not much feel being presented to the horse that he could use intelligently.
he got him in but it wasn't to nice and he closed the dorr before the horse was calm about the whole ordeal.
After the session (and I am no expert i'll say that) she was no better off and the horse...well I think he just plain hates a trailer now...so I offered some assistance after the fella left for the night.
We unloaded that horse and he came outta there like a longtailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
I took us just under 3 hours (you or pat probably could have got it done faster) but I am still learning lots and faster wasn't what the horse wanted anyway (he'd just been through that).
He just wanted some leadership and a way of going that was right for him...yup that would have made it better for him.
So to make a long story shorter..he loads pretty well now, but we made a program out of it and she is happier now too.
Don't think her sliding stops are any better but she can sure get her horse to the events easier and get him home easier now....I'd say that.
Jer Bear
Sal - Bomb proof horse....hmm...theres a statement......NEVER SEEN ONE.
I have seen some pretty wide eyed horses with the right person and a little leadership go along way adn I have seen some supposid bomd proof horses BLOW up with the wrong person on them.
I want to be with a horse that respects me (after I earn it) and that he looks to me for guidance when he is unsure.
If he gets worried that's fine......just don't want him to BOLT.....been there done that.
My horse shys, but he doesn't bolt...he might stop FAST, btu he waits to get a signal from me.
I like that. It takes time....IMHO just because a horse does something for someone else doesn't mean they will do it for you.
jer bear
Jerry,
I may have used the wrong term and I know a horse will reacted different to different ppl. I just meant it as the horse would be used to more things going on around them.
Yes, having the horse trust You as much as you trust the horse makes for a sounder bond.
No disrespect meant ok - this is jut a discussion and it seems you knwo some things about horses so
Even a horse that knows what's going on around them knows that from what they have been exposed to - their environment and the confidence in their leader to date.
I have seen arena horse that are AWESOME in the arena just freak at a small trail ride....well so small they didn't get out of the gate.
My horse (bush horse all his life) freaked when he saw his first mail box - silouette of the cowboy leaning against the door jam (those cutout black ones).
Then I took him in an arena - WHEW what a time that was....but we took it slowwwwww...tehn cones were introduced - it was amazing how many things bothered him.....
We chased black bears - he finds all kinds of game...never even flinches but it's what he was used to.
So we have some along way and now we trust each other...but I am still the leader.
We were going through some really thick brush and he wouldn't go forward....I couldn't se anything so I urged him forward and he nickered at me...so I stopped and looked - there infront of us was a hornets nest in the ground.
We backed outta there and he looked at me and nickered...i knew what he meant.
that's so cool.
I hope you get your dream horse...yup that's what i hope.
jer
True, I know what you mean and I didn't take it in any kind of bad way. I have had ppl tell me I don't know horses and had Horse proof them wrong.
What I mean is the horse trusted me and worked nicely around me and gave others a hard time.. NOW I AM NOT SAYING I'M A HORSE WHISPER IN ANYWAY. Just that some horses liked me around them better then other ppl.
I just wish I had land to have a horse on the same property as Me. Time will tell if I get that.

THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE!
I ride with Dennis Reis several times a year at his tour stops. I can deal with the really bad horses and the students that I am trying to help because it is a timeing issue. I have a hard time dealing with horse people that really do not listen. Dennis told me "Welcome to my world". It can be discourageing. I make everyone that comes to me for help must get training themselves. I never have a problem with the horses, It is always the people. I could talk for hours about horse psychology but it would be hard to grasp the concept.
You learn by being around the best in their field. Everytime I am around Dennis at the clinic or out to eat just talking, I learn something.
I am going to shoot with Rick Welch because I really want to see how his perspective on shooting is and how he tunes his bows to shoot were he looks.
If I am not on horseback, I am shooting my bow and that is how its been for thirty some years.
See that's what I am talking about....I am so far away from the experts that I have to rely on what I can get my hands on.
I don't get to sit and have a coffee with some of you folks so here is where I get the info....some I take...some I don't, but I am sure glad I have the choice.
Not right or wrong...just the way it is.

Hello to the " HORSECRAZY "
Please let`s keep this thread on course, otherwise I am afraid the Administrators will close it down.
Do not understand me falsely - No disrespect to you "horse crazy" folks out there !!!!!
This thread has been started about HORSE ARCHERY.
I am more than willing, to share my experiences about how to train a horse, but, if we continue talking more and more about Horsemanship (and leaving out archery), chances of thread getting closed, will rise.
Again, please do not get me wrong.

Hi Jer Bear.
Come on folks, giddy up !!!
Lets do the "HI HO SILVER" and give Mr. Wald a visit.
Can you imagine, a whole bunch of mounted Trad Gangers riding cross country, all the way up - north to Alaska.
That would be some kind of adventure .... :bigsmyl:

Daniel
Good Call Daniel....I thinking the same thing bud.
This is a cool thread about horse archery...lets keep it archery/hunting related...thanx guys
Good example of gentle reining in...lol Nice save! Thanks guys! I was enjoying the pictures of mounted archery.
God bless,Mudd
I agree...sorry got all excited is all. I know it's real hard to do horse archery though if you can't get your horse used to shooting off his back.
that's kinda where it went "cwazy" " like a widowwww wabbitt.
My appologies....whoa horsey whoa.
Jer Bear :o
Daniel,
How long did it take the horse to be OK with you shooting the bow off it's back when running?
Also I have read that you are better off shooting when all 4 hoofs are off the ground, Do you find this to be true?
And can You post pix of game you have taken off horse back?
It is a VERY cool thread, as I've stated before... Thanks to all of your comments, I think I can feel a little less intimidated by such fantastic creatures, and can also imagine myself astride one while loosing arrows!
It's part of my big dream, you know? Open land, bow in hand, a trusty horse. Ahhh... if not in this mortal coil then in the Happy Hunting Grounds.
Daniel - I would suggest (if you would be up to it - being that you do this already and look pretty darn comfortable at it btw)....starting a thread called
"preparation for Horse Archery".
You could list the process in order so that maybe WE that are interested could practice and follow along.
It could be somewhat of a "Horse Archery - online course"
I think the Moderators would be ok with that approach.
We could do something every week and we could post our progress...i always do better with a PLAN.
Would you be interested and more importantly would the moderators be willing to allow us to do this.
I think it's a very important subject because it is a big part of our history in the archery world.....and it's just plain cooooooool.
Jer Bear
You could even do Vid's of you riding and shooting targets, Give pointers and Tips.. This way when others ever go on a horse back trip to a hunting camp and they get a chance to take a shot at say a wabbit, ground hog, grouse what ever. Not saying doing this on a outfitters horse, but their Own.
I love Pat Parelli, I also like Clinton Anderson. Im would consider myself a rusty level 2 in the Parelli training system. About 6-7 years ago I bought 2 colts and raised and trained them and then went on a solo packing trip in the New Mexico, Gila wilderness. Still have the horse just not the time.
Here is my boy. The real Amicus
(http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc214/amicuspaint/Amicus.jpg)
I used to be able to shoot my bow and my shot gun from his back. I havent tried it in a while.
Great pictures. I love that spotted Stallion.
Take care

The horse part - no problem
The form part - well, most of the time
The form part while doing the horse part - well, let's just say you appear to be a bit more advanced than me!
I often pride myself in my ability to multi-task........but you appear to have taken multi-tasking to a higher level! There's got to be a Lakota Sioux somewhere that's smiling.
Daniel,
Please tell us a little about Andorra. Looks like beautiful country.
Thanks,

Hello HORSECRAZY,
Hi Jer Bear, hello Sal.
I really do appreciate your suggestions about starting a "HORSE ARCHERY - ONLINE COURSE".
Instead of an "ONLINE COURSE" - I`d like to suggest the following:
I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER YOU MY FRIENDSHIP INSTEAD OF BECOMING A TEACHER WHO IS TALKING TO STUDENTS !!
Sharing my knowledge about Horse Archery would be a pleasure for me.
Daniel
Amazingly cool!
... I have a friend that bowhunts off his mule..easy drag too !!!
Hello Daniel and others. After a while i stayed off from Trad Gang, i am very happy you started this topic!
I have 13 year old Wesphalian mare and we have been training horse archery together / alone here in Finland. But now i have found 6 more persons in my country who are interested in this sport and my wish is to start first finnish horseback archery club soon.
It is great this sport is coming more and more popular all over the world and these forums about it are very wellcome. There sure is lots of things to talk and share.
And to Daniel! Great to see you shooting from horseback too!!
Here is a link to Youtube about me and my horse shooting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AasQY8QD7bk
Greetings to you all!
-marko
Marko that was great....yipper want to do that to...getting the horse trained up right now so he'll be ready when I can shoot.
Lots to do before then
Jer
Great pictures.
Thanks Jerry and go for it! It sure is fun! Just remember to proceed slowly with horse. If it scares something (arrow, bow, quiver...), you have to take few steps back and start training again. Step by step on terms of your horse. But it is one of the greatest feelings i know, to get that connection and cooperate with horse and shoot from gallop.
Have fun!
Greetings!
wow like a youtube gathering on youtube, looks like we are all here, Daniel, awesome as always. Marko, we need to see more of you on here!!! You definatly have the experience and you are most definatly a heck of a shot!
Hey Chris, nise to meet you here too! Thanks, it is allways nice to visit here too, it is nicest atmosphere on these forums and so much to learn!
Marko - no problem with the bow etc - I can shoot guns off of him and we have chased bears and caribou.
What I am working on is a nice extended canter with control.
He is a great bush horse, but doesn't have alot of go in him. I have really needed it for what we normally do 30 mile return trips in the bush.
So the go part is what I am working on and moving off my legs better. My parelli program has helped heaps with the rest so i will trust it to help me here too.
thanks - I will keep you updated.
Have to figur out how to tape with my camera so the file isn't so big for youtube or photobucket,
WHAT DO YOU AND DANIEL do
Jer Bear
That is to COOL!!
  :notworthy:
Simply amazing!
Jer- Ah,i see. Then you have only "fine tuning" i would say LOL. I have been training those similar things- the control without hands, and also my balance for riding. I started it last May (2009) so i have LOT of work to do, i am just a beginner in horsemanship and riding. ( actually my whole "career" is in my Youtubechannel LOL )
But i am so anxious to learn more and more all the time. Thank God i have patient horse and she is good teacher to me also.
I have found that bareback riding is a great way to practise my balance better. And ofourse your parelli program is great thing to go forward.
My horse was not in good shape when i purchased it with my friend last june. So our trips in woods have been only like one hour trips. I am trying to be carefull not to break her legs. I want to build her hape carefull and get her good condition / healty soon as possible but without risks for injuries.
I have only pocket digital camera i use for filming. Then i make my "movies" with Windows Movie Maker (came with this old computer) That packs the movie smaller when you save it. But i am not good with editing and my movies are ot so good quality. (in fact i am so stubed that i dont know how i would add my picture to my messages LOL)
Daniel has MUCH more better advices i believe.

I think you are doing great myself....
Cavelettes will help with conditioning and to stregthen the back muscles - not too high but walk her through them 2-3 times a week for about ten minutes.
hill therapy if good too. Get her on a long line and get her to trot or canter on a side slope or through ditches...easy at first though

My main riding horse is " bow broke " but unless i keep up the practice he can begin to shy without a gentle re introduction . i'm actually about to break my older anglo arab " Jake " to the bow . at present i'm just going for walks withy him where i shoot the bow from the ground , rattle my quiver etc .
now , if only i could get those rabbiots to strand still ...lol
i'm taking " Longshot " my main younger horse on a pig/goat hunt later this year ... should be interesting !!!
