Title: need help choosing a new bow
Post by: tradsniper on January 23, 2010, 10:43:00 PM
I currently shoot a recurve but I really want to try a longbow and there are a couple that have really caught my eye. One of them is the first one on Big Jims Bows website  http://www.bigjimsbowcompany.com/  . The next is The Orion from Dryad Bows  http://www.dryadbows.com/Fiberglass%20Collection/orion.htm  . If anyone could give me any information on these bows it would be greatly appreciated. I am not the greatest shot so I am looking for a bow that is easy to shoot. also i would like to see some other pictures of these bows if have them

In the latest issue of Traditional Bowhunter magazine there is a whole write up and test on the Dryad Orian. If you are looking at one it gives a lot of info. I read good things about Big Jims bows, but unfortunately I haven't got to check one out. We ordered some arrow shafts from Big Jims a month or two ago and they were very helpful in answering questions when we called and had great customer service.

The best way when looking at a new bow is to get your hands on one. Everyone has their own preferences on grip style, shape, etc. It's a personal decision on what fits you best and works best for YOU. Good luck in your search.

Big Jim's bows are very nice. His workmanship is excellent. Good prices too.

for what's been mentioned, they're ALL good bows - and all the opinions in the world of others ain't gonna help ya wiggle outta making up yer own mind.

what's most important is the holding weight and bow length - get that figured out and the rest is pure subjectiveness .......

He asked about two particular bows.

You really need to shoot them if you can. Everyone tends to chime-in with their "dream bow" concept, or what's best for them.  It may not be what's best for you.

Figure out your draw length and preferred draw weight, call Dryad and Big Jim and see what bow lengths they recommend. Decide from there where to go. Both great guys to deal with, the bow styles are not real similar so that should help you too.

I can understand what caused your interest in that bow from Big Jim. It is one of the prettiest bows I have seen and has that neat looking two piece connection. I have no idea how it shoots, but you will look good with it in your hands no matter what, and it is certainly reasonably priced.

I have been doing the same thing as you have tradsniper. I decided on the buffalo bow for sure. Now I am trying to decide between two different limb wood options.

good luck on the search!!

I wouldn't buy any bow before I shoot or shoot the same style @ brand or test drive one? Just my 2cents worth J.T.
