Come on Guys,
While I am trying to get up enough nerve, information, and cash to "get both feet wet" with a Thunder Stick MOAB, the least you folks could do is talk about them. Most of you have been there--I AM GOING CRAZY--wanting a new bow. I have asked around on here before to see if there is one close enough to go shoot, but 300 - 400 miles is a little too far. Man they look good in pictures.
I have tried longbows before and even though I have bought and made a few none of them have "worked" for me. I always go back to my curve. However, every few years the itch gets raw and I have to try again. A friend wants to buy the last D-bow I built, so some funds should be coming in the near future. Here I go again.
I need pictures, ideas, and comments--PLEASE--help me scratch.
My favorite bows. (http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj10/longbowben/266.jpg) (http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj10/longbowben/001.jpg)
Ben, What veneers are those? And by the way that is a nice group with one of your favorite bows.
<>< :)
I got a MOAB this time last year and I love it. It shoots better for me than some of my other longbows that are similar. Workmanship is outstanding!
You can't go wrong with Jim
Another thing tell Jim to cut close to center, that will help a recurve shooter out.The bow will shoot center instead of to the left.
The Osage and Eucalyptus bow someone (maybe Leatherneck) posted a few weeks ago was the poison ivy.
My draw is 29 ¼" and I want around 50#+ in approximately 60". Will this be too short? Will it "jar" my elbow? I know these types of questions are very broad and so much depends on the specific shooter, but would like to get others opinions.
Sorry, I wish I could help you but unfortunately I've been infected myself.
In a feeble attempt to scare myself back to reality I resorted to calling Jim and talking with him.I was hoping for a different result that what I ended up with.
It backfired on me,now it's even worse.
I feel for you!

Wow very nice Extrema312.Well im busted no deal now.
You wont feel shock with these bows and the 60 incher will be fine at your draw. They are sweet shooters for sure! MIne not near as pretty as those above. I have a 59# that is the basic diamond wood riser and real bamboo limbs. Not much to look at but it really shoots quick and quiet.
SL
What big city is Huntington, TX located by? Reason I ask is we will be coming down that way in March and your welcome to join us to shoot.

Ben, if I could get you a hundred dollars would that set off the Hatfield and McCoy feud?
All kidding aside, I knew the Gang would come through. Those pictures are great and the bow Leatherneck posted "again" is what started my itch.
Rob, what are those woods and do you draw the full 28? How does it feel?
Aw yeah! This just gets easier and easier with each posted picture...not!!!!...lol

red cedar veneers over boo limb cores, cocobolo riser with some other hardwood accents, deer antler limb tips, laced on grip. i hold at 29" so it's something over 50#. very smooth draw. this is truly one very
*FAST* longbow, even with 615 to 720 grain carbons.
Mr. Willams, it is truly ok, for I have been on the sidelines here at TradGang since before Christmas just a "drooling".
Mr. Wald, yes I understand and have talked about going to San Antonio on Spring Break (teacher).
Mr. Haner, I will pose the same question to you. What are those woods?
Sorry about the Judo, Mr. Hilt.
Man, this is an awesome site and wonderful people. Of course, I already knew this, but it never hurts to say it again.
Keep it coming.... The itch feels... I don't know better or worse.
I just got mine , from trad ganger John Hansen , finally a LH MOAB to my door so , I tested it out yesterday and was really impresed with the speed I need to get used to it but I will soon give a review and post some pics,
Jmgcurve Let me introduce myself..lol My name is Mudd and I'm a bowalcholic and tradicted in the very worst/best of ways.
I do fully appreciate that you only intended to be respectful but I feel weird when someone calls me Mr Williams or Mr anything.
I sure hope I can get used to being called something other than Roy or Mudd because GLW)it's going to be grandpa by this time next year.
I apologize for getting off track. Please forgive me!
God bless,Mudd
Gerardo lets see it.
Mudd it is and thanks. Congratulations are in order..... I have been Granpa for several years now, and it is truly GRAND.
It's Michael for me.

:clapper: :jumper: That took a while. I hope you really enjoy it.
I am with Rob on the speed. Seems really fast and no mater what arrow weight I shoot the bow just seems like it still shoots at the same speed. I have to get some arrows through a chronograph with it one of these days.
I got that bow used so I don't know for sure. If I ever did I forgot. I want to say the riser is figured cocobolo with some ebony, wenge or some other real dark wood accents. The veneers could be a couple of different woods stained that color, but I want to say Tamo Ash. Could also be a curly wood like maybe birch. It was a beauty for sure. I sold it because it was too heavy for me at the time. I have another MOAB I will post up when I take some pic's of it.
I have as not so great elbow and it bothers my elbow some. Not so much on the shot, but more at anchor if I hold it a while. It is more a grip angle thing I get with any lower wrist grip bow. Mostly I get it when I have not shot a low wrist for a while.
I draw somewhere between 29 1/4" and 29 1/2". 60" is just fine, but I would love to try out a 62".
Nice bows guys...........
Hey Ben...what about you and I meet somewhere on I70 you bring the above pictured right hand (family) MOAB and I'll bring an envelope($$$) and we will trade...I'll make it worth the judo shot to the butt! Let me know when "you know who" is working and you can get it outta the house...LOL I too have been looking real hard at the MOAB's and hope to shoot a couple at KZOO.

I don't know how many you will find there unless one is on the used table or you find someone's to shoot. Jim will not have a booth.
I have one. I will be there Friday most of the night and as much as possible on Saturday until my arms fall off. :archer:
I would bring my bow, but you can't take your bows in unless they go to the for sale table or go to the bow doc. I can take it over in the truck so you can see it at least. You can come over to my house sometime on Saturday afternoon or Sunday and shoot my bow if you like.
Maybe next year I should set-up a try, buy and trade program at my house for everyone coming into town. My gun club has a outdoor shooting range plus a 3D. We could do a Kzoo expo shoot, but I don't want to take anything away from the expo. It would be fun to get a few people together and shoot each others bows for a couple hours in the back yard.
Hey Todd, Now you're talking!

Remember, I'm a Marine. The claymores are already set in the yard. Along with some other goodies. Ben, are you feeling lucky.
No not now :biglaugh:
Typical flyboy!!! No guts, no glory.
I mentioned Hatfields and McCoys; however, it looks like the Air Force verses the Marines.
Folks, Thank each of you so much for helping me scratch the itch. You do not have to stop.
Traditional Bowhunters because of our very nature, character, and morals are fantastic folks. To prove this look at the information and pictures I received from just a couple of minutes of typing. Awesome!
Another proof comes from someone on this post (to remain nameless at this point) that contacted me and offered to send me their MOAB if I would pay shipping both ways. Are you kidding me? Of course I said yes.
TradGangers go on with your bad selfs!
With deepest appreciation,
Michael
Yea and you all know how them Marines hate calling in all that firepower from above when they're in a tight spot. But I know the marines have their own planes too. Just had to keep my Air Force boys happy. :goldtooth:
Very nice looking bows.
Gerardo,
Wow, that lefty MOAB has been a long time coming. I look forward to pics and a full review buddy!
Congratulations.
Hey Mike are claymores a new 3-d target....lol just kidding....but after seeing the pic's of your bow...it might be worth a try....to bad Jim won't be at the show.
Todd...I would love to have a chance to see your bow if you are coming and don't mind throwing it in....tnx Terry
I'm in line for a bow from Jim, probably in April. I'm kind of torn between the TSIII and the MOAB. This thread doesn't help....
Anybody shoot a 62" MOAB?

Anybody shoot a 62" MOAB?
I have had 2 TS 3's and 2 MOAB's. I have shot more of them than that. For me if I draw 28" or more it would be a MOAB for anything under 64". The TS 3 is nice when longer. I had a 66" and 62". The 62" I didn't like as well as the 60" MOAB. The MOAB is the performance bow of the two and has a shorter riser.
Now that I think of it I believe I shot a 62" MOAB that is MOJO's. It was nice. He could be checking this thread at some point. I will have to shoot him a PM and see if he has a 62". He has had some nice TS bows and had a few the last time I knew.
Yup, the one xtrema shot was my 62". I shoot the 62" MOAB better than the 60". I've had a 60" and sold it. I will never sell my 62".
There was a very pretty 62" III down at Bob's Gun and Tackle in Hastings that I shot a few months back. It also was very nice, but no MOAB in my opinion.
http://shop.bobsgt.com/
If anyone ever wants a new Thunderstick quickly, Bob's usually has 10 or so new ones in stock.
I've owned a couple Thunderstick Mag's, a couple III's and a couple MOAB's.
Of all those, I shoot the 62" MOAB best.
I also agree that the 66" III is one heck of a bow too.
I've gone back and forth between split and 3 under, settling on 3 under and the 62" MOAB, with the right string and hush puppies is "wow" quiet with 3 under.
I've had a few, two 58" MOAB's and still have one of them. Also have had a MAG that was 60", also a nice bow but I like the MOAB better... I've also got a 60" MOAB on order with Jim. The onw 58" I have is 60# @ 29" with an osage riser with Tamo Ash veneers, awesome bow and shoots where I look with authority! The 60" I have on order is 70# @ 29" with an osage riser with bocote flare and cherry stained curly anigre veneers and moose tips... can't wait to meet her!
You've made a great choice, and Jim is one of the best in both skill and character!

That sounds like a nice looking bow. Be sure to post up pic's of that one. I can't disagree about Jim at all. He has been real helpful with info on my used TS bows.
I used the link to Bob's but wasn't able to locate any traditional bows of any kind on his site. Help!
Thanks in advance!
God bless,Mudd
PS Once I figure out what time zone they're in maybe I'll just give them a call.

They are in Michigan. I grew up about 6 miles from there so know it well. I spent most of my money there when I was a kid. It was mostly a gun store, but they have grown over the years and now all kinds of stuff. The trad bow section is small, but better than any other non trad bow shops or outdoor stores. They wouldn't list the trad bows on the web site I wouldn't think. I was in there a few weeks ago and they had a couple TS bows. I want to say a mag or two, a TS3 and one MOAB if I recall correctly. You can call for inventory and spec's. I have tried to shoo the MOAB a couple times, but can never wait until they sell another cross bow to get any help in the archery department. You can PM Arwin, and see if he would go take a look to see what he thinks of the ones in stock. He lives in Hastings.
I think there's 2 guys there that shoot trad bows. Scott is one guys name, if I recall. If you call Bob's, ask for somebody that knows trad bows.
It is mostly a gun/compound shop, but it's the only place you'll find new TS's on the rack, that I know of.
Another place to call in Michigan is Traditional Outdoor Supply.
http://www.traditionaloutdoorsupply.com/
They have a used boo Thunderstick III, 55lb 66" RH there for like $350 I believe, if anyone is looking for one. I was just in there the other day.
Mudd....go to Bob's website and you can send them an e-mail....they have 3 MOAB's 62" 54# to 60#....they will send you pic's. Or you can call and ask for the archery dept....very helpful folks.
Well there you go. They sometimes have used TS's there too. You may want to ask if a used price interests you.
But I admit, at least for myself, a new bow has it's attraction.
A new bow has the mojo you give it. LOL
That said, my 62" MOAB was bought used here.
Both deer I killed this year was with my MOAB.
I just shot in the basement for a while with my Toelke whip, Whisperstik mojostik and voodoostik and MOAB. The MOAB is equal to all of them. And that's great company.
I did thanks. still waiting for e-mail with pictures. Of the 55#. Thanks!
God bless,Mudd
I am also feeling a little pain in my elbow with the MOAB , has someone felt this?
Another one for ya...
I love the picture, thanks Seabound!
Gerardo what is your bows' weight&length and how much have you been shooting it? Is this something new or has it happened with other bows before?
God bless,Mudd
I just got the bow last week , and it hadn´t happen before I will try heavier arrows and increase the brace height , the bow is 54@28 and I usually shoot 56@28 , i will post some pics of the bow it is absolutely beautiful
I keep all of mine at 7 1/2 and arrow weight in the 600 area.
Gerardo what is your setup?
I finally got to see and shoot one today. As stated earlier, a TradGanger sent his to me to try. I did not know him or him me, but true to form there are still GOOD folks out there. Most of them are traditional shooters.
Shot the bow with various arrows and it shot great. Looks good too!Going to shoot some more tomorrow with a dacron string I built today.
Longbowben, is that to the throat?
Yes it just shot better with the higher brace height for me.
Jmgcurve Are you just having a fling or is MOAB fever still hot?
The one I shot kept me going back again and again. Every time someone else put it down, I looked around to be sure I wasn't keeping someone else who might have been wanting to shoot it from having their way with it. But I made sure I was free to shoot it when it was free to be shot.
I just couldn't get enough of it. Please don't tell me it was just that particular bow?
God bless,Mudd
QuoteOriginally posted by Gerardo:

Hey brother, I understand what you mean. Are you a typical longbow shooter? What I mean is, I shoot a takedown recurve as my go to bow. I feel that my one piece MOAB longbow gives me a little more shock to the elbow than my recurve. I have had elbow issues in the past but it seems the recurve is a little "softer" so to speak on my elbow. This is my opinion anyway. I still love shooting it(MOAB), just cant overdue it. In my case I feel it's just not being used to a one piece longbow.
I shoot around 7 1/2" brace from the throat myself.
Mike
Thanks Mike,
yes I think I need to increase the brace height, I shot it at 7 and a little lower, that is the brace height that they usually recommend but at 7 1/2 I think it will be better, got a javi this week I will post pics soon for motivation
Save a couple for us Gerardo!!!!
Mudd, it is hot, only cooled slightly because I have one on loan to shoot right now..sent you a pm. I am going to buy one just don't know what configuration right now.
Leatherneck, Longbowben, guys thanks for the offer to catch up with you to shoot your bows on your fishing trip. However, after shooting the loaner, there is no need. See my note to Mudd..going to buy one.
And of course, all this said if the LORD wills,
Michael
If you change your mind, we'll be invading Texas on March 18th. :bigsmyl:
OK, I let the string go this week. Called Jim and ordered a MOAB. I will send the loaner home Monday.
This is a BIG Shout out for Jeff Cooper in Alaska, for he is the TradGanger who shipped and loaned his bow. Sorry Jeff if you are bashful, but the world needs to know who good people are. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Mudd, How did Jim's trip to Missouri turn out for you? Great I hope, so you can tell me about the 62" verses 60".
The bad news is that Jim couldn't make the trip because of a winter storm. The good news is Jeff Struberg was nice enough to drag out his 62" MOAB for me to shoot today at the UBM Festival In Jeff City.
The conclusion is both the 60" and the 62" are real shooters with great point-ability(hit where you look). I wouldn't turn down either and could live with either one.
What made the difference for me was after talking with Jim and finding out he had one that was as close as I could ask for a bow.
The result is........ wait for it....lol
My bow is being mailed out Monday!!! Yahoo!!
Bamboo with bacote diamond wood riser. 62" and 54@28.
I can't say the fever is better... in fact it might be worse!!...lol Congratulations on your bow order and I'm soooo very glad I don't have to wait very much longer.
God bless,Mudd
Mudd, Pictures and comments when it arrives!!!!!!!!!
I know my fever is worse. May have to quit getting on the computer for a few weeks...
Naw, a guy once said, and I am too "Traddicted".
Mudd, glad to see you're joining Club MOAB. You will never be disappointed in it, that I can assure you. I own 2, a 60 and a 62". I shoot the same arrows from each, and can shoot pretty much any arrow I have laying around, they are very forgiving as far as arrow spine etc. I have shot other longbows, and no disrespect to the others, I always find mself comparing to Jim's Thundersticks. My wife bought a T-stick III a couple years ago at GLLI, and its a shooter too.
Jim is a top notch bowyer, a great guy, and makes a helluva bow.
ALLERT FOR FEAVER SUFFERERS
There is a MOAB on the LW for sale.
Like new Moab 60" 51# at 28" right hand. The veneers are eucalyptus, very pretty!
I saw that bow too check out how many time
seller has posted.
PM'ed ya Mudd.
Check out the thread "Straight from the wilds of Michigan"...lol You been asleep Jmcurve?...lol
God bless,Mudd
Naw, just missed it I guess. Really, I spent most of the evening last making an assessment for my 5th graders--Unit Test. Therefore, I only glanced at the TradGang.
Checked it out, replied, and awaiting pictures and further evaluation. Keep me up to speed on the skinny harness because I have never used them and plan on trying after reading some of George Stout's comment about old dogs and new tricks.
Michael
I sent you a pm with all the scoop. It's all good!!
God bless,Mudd
Mudd, don't hurt yourself shooting those new strings in tomorrow.
Got the scoop and the "glue". Thanks man, as a science teacher that link was great. Knew about laminin, but not what it looked like.
My "glue" is an awesome GOD!
Michael
