I shoot aluminum so I need a screw in, 125grn. I recently got laid off from my job so I have extra time on my hands. Thought I would take advantage and get in the woods. Any suggestions? Thank's, Jason
-
That depends on what small game you're pursuing. Up to squirrels and rabbits, Hex Heads are hard to beat. For larger animals, I'd suggest broadheads.
-
I use same G-5 small game heads I use with my compounds. But I screw them into a 25 gr booster.
-
I'll second the hex heads suggestion. The Ace Bunny Busters are excellent.

I agree with Jason on this one!

Squirrels and rabbits mainly but there will be coons, possums, etc... might want to make me a cap! HA! Jason

Mate , these SGB's (small game blunts) from Outback are what i have been using for the last 12 months, they are nice and quiet unlike some others and are easily repairable if you mangle the pins.

Jason, first Hi, and sorry to hear about the job loss, brother!
Take some 125 gr. field pts. or blunts and cut with hacksaw down the middle, best you can do to eyeball and use some scrap banding or heck even an ole hacksaw blade. Cut some triangle pieces and epoxy or superglue , in the slots. Then take a file to the leading edge!
As for the coons and possums, broadheads are the better choice!
This time of year, early in the morning, I love to look for the coons on the ground! It's the breeding period, and you can catch them heading back to the dens, or more.
Also for you Hoosiers, rabbit season was extended to the 15th of Feb. I'm not sure why, in my part of the state, they are pretty much non existent, do to Hawks, yotes, feral cats and loss of habitat.

I usually shoot judos but them squirrels are hard to kill with a judo. Wasnt there a sponser on here that started making small game heads? I don't remember where I seen them but they looked purdy wicked! Jason
-
Yes, the Red Feather Archery Talon, wicked head, can't wait to hit a rabbit with one!
-
Steve, loseing my job was kinda unexpected but I was getting sick of working there anyway HA! I still have your number! We need to get together somtime and fling some arras. If I don't see you before Cloverdale well get together there!! Jason

Thank's for the info Joe! Jason

I've shot judos, but the get stuck in trees easily.
Hex heads are great, but they don't do well for me on squirrels unless I smoke them in the head. I've had them mash, but not penetrate squirrels a couple times out of my 60lbs bows. (ya ya make a head shot I know lol)
The plain old steel blunts from 3Rivers work pretty good for me and for some reason I've had them penetrate squirrels and chipmunks and take them down pretty well that way as the arrow always stays in them.
Another head I'm really liking is the Talon by Red Feather Archery. It shoots very well even at compound speeds, the concave tip helps it stay above junk most times, and the edges you can keep sharp like a broadhead so it works well in many facets.
I've shot the G5 SGH, but have broken them. However, they are sharp and mangle well.
I haven't tried the Muzzy SG-X yet, but I will!

VPA's new SGTs (Small Game Thumpers)are wicked. This guy was DOA.

I've used Judo's, Hex blunts, and about everything else there is out there. But lately, because it's what I had that was the same weight as my bh's.....I've been using just a plain old blunt...They've done pretty well for me this fall/winter so far.....

I have some of the new RFA Talon's here that I hope to put to the test soon...they look wicked!

...for wood shafts Use cheap 38 special brass !

Hi Jason,
I do not want to highjack your thread.

I am working on a video right now that will show you how I make them.
Should be ready by next week.

I like the 3rivers archery Hammer. REALLY knocks rabbits for a loop!
-
I was hoping someone would talk about the Hammer.I have been meaning to order some. They look good and come in a wide range of weights.I needed something fairly heavy and these would get me there. Thanks Mike.I'll get them ordered.
-
Covey, I'd like to invite you to give our Talons a try. We've got 125 grain screw in points available. They are tough, designed to be sharpenable like a broadhead and pack a punch with the concave blunt tip. They can knock the stuffing out of squirrels and rabbits, but carry enough blade on them to be more than effective on raccoons, nutria and possums. You can find them at our website www.redfeatherarcheryonline.com (http://www.redfeatherarcheryonline.com)

Hex Blunts

Depending on what size alluminum arrow you are shooting you can still use pistol brass just glued over the shaft. I did this for my kids and fishing arrows when they where little just glued fish point over 2018 they fit great and worked without issue
-
Stan, The talons look great! I my order me a few in the next couple day's. Jason
-
I really like snub nosed Wensel Woodsmen...and if I'm using a back quiver I angle off the back corner 45 degrees so they come out of the back quiver easier. I also like to use old Bheads.
Gotta say....I like the looks of those Talons for sure...and will order some of them soon.
-
I'm having a lot of skwerl & bunny success using the Hammers from 3-Rivers. Failing that I like the old bodkin 3-blade head with the nose snubbed off.
-
The Talons look deadly. Will they stick up out of reach in a tree?
My reason for using Judo heads is because they will not stick up high off the ground.
John
-
I can't stress this enough: do not use any blunt-type head on raccoons.
-
John3, not sure how to answer this one. I've stuck judos into trees before, just not very deep. I designed the Talon so the rear of the blade is really wide for just that reason, easy arrow removal when stump shooting. It is basically a pyramid with concave tip and scalloped sides.
Jason, good point. I've taken four raccoons with a Talon. I do, however, sharpen them on a stone before I hunt with them. I don't think this would be necessary on smaller small game, but it is critical on coons and nutria. The diameter of the head is 3/4" and the blades sharpen pretty well.

Stan,
Any word on the glue on heads yet? I am hoping to try some on bunnies before our season ends the end of Feb.

Thanks Stan. I will get to your website.

Brian, just got off the phone with the machinist. He's telling me the 15th of Feb. :( Thought he would have the design and weight down correctly before that, but didn't hit right on the weight and now has another part he has to run that will tie up the machine for a while. Here is a pic of the one proto-type he turned out that was too heavy. I'll keep ya'll posted.

The prototype looks effective to me Stan!
I would definitely be willing to field-test it for you.
What is too heavy? Are you willing to part with the prototype?
Shoot straight, David Camp

Hate to badmouth a product, but I would NOT buy another G5 small game head. They cost $10 a piece and the edges break off of them easily.
I like the Ace hex heads, but will have to try the Talons soon.
-
The only problem I have is this, I have a kwikie quiver on my bow and I can't get a head to set in the grippers without destroying the hood. I don't know about the talons, they may be tappered enough to fit. ? Jason
-
Ace Hexheads (1.60/ea)used to be my favorite, but I've found the Hammerheads (2.00 ea) to be more durable and retain their edge better.
I really like the looks of Stan's mean heads, but 5.00 ea is a little past my breaking point for bludgeons.
-
Covey, I don't find any problems with these heads going into my Selway quiver. The taper is sufficient that it fits into the slots where my three blade broadheads fit.
Shooty1, sorry about that. I really am looking for a way to get these made cheaper while staying in the States. I understand exactly what you're saying.
Shinken, the proto-type weighs 205 grains. I don't think I'll part with this one. I'm working with the machinist on a way to offer mulitple weights without the need to machine multiple heads. Hopefully, we'll come up with something you find useful. Thanks,
Stan

"Hate to badmouth a product, but I would NOT buy another G5 small game head. They cost $10 a piece and the edges break off of them easily."
I've not found that to be true. I bought just one of those heads to try last Summer. I've shot it hundreds of times and taken a dozen squirrels or more with just the one head. I've hit rocks, stumps, trees, etc. with no ill effects. I just bought three more in a pack from Bass Pro for 21 bucks total and that works out to be 7 bucks each. They're the best small game head I've tried thus far and they don't get lost under the leaves either.
I'm curious to know what you hit to break the head.
