Picked up my mount tonight. When I shot the deer it's velvet had started to shed. I didn't know whether to leave it or tear it off before mounting. As you see I decided to leave it and I'm now glad I did.

Well, there sure is more than one advantage of killing your buck in September! You're first in line at the taxidermist!

Hey TJ- That buck looks NASTY!!! ( I mean that in a good way!!!)

Steve/Curt, I wanted have the blood painted back on as well but I thought about all my 10 year old daughters friends that funnel through our house and didn't want to gross them out anymore than my "Man Room" does already.
My buddy shot a deer this season as well in shedding velvet. He is putting the blood on his. I'll post a photo of it when he gets it back. I saw it laying on the floor almost done so it won't be long.
Very Cool!!!
Bill

Nice deer Tom, and that velvet is cool.
I caught a buck on a trail camera while he was coming out of velvet but I've never seen one in person.
To see a buck like that and get in the small window while he's rubbing the velvet...it is amazing!
Nice mount!
Josh
cool! Wish WV would open up season earlier, congrats on a beautiful trophy.
That is a beautiful buck. You made a good choice in keeping the velvet on.
Congratulations.

Mark, Larry Thomas mounted him. I had him cut down on the white paint around the nose, ears and eyes some (on Guru's suggestion) and it looks much more realistic. He is a fantastic taxidermist and I highly recommend him.
Looks great.. congrats...JMHO, a lil red paint on the showing tines would add to the mount a lil bit still looks great though.
Also... is that a Pucketts Broadhead on that arrow on your wall?
Great mount TJ, looks real "GNARLY"!! Clearwater taxidermy in JTown also does surperb work. Check them out if you get a chance.

It is a "Pucketts Bloodtrailer" Broadhead. That is the arrow I shot the deer on the left with in 1995. I feel victim to the expandable craze for one year. I shot that deer right through the ribs and that broadhead looked like you ran over it with a truck.

David, Clearwater taxidermy I assume you are talking about (Jim and Barb). They do good work I have a mount they did. I like Larry much better. Stop by one day and I'll show you the differences.
Looks real good!
VERY COOL !!! ...But I need to know who mounted the Buck? Amazing work of art !!!! Great lines
NICE!!!!
velvet is cool
That is great looking mount. The velvet really makes it unique.
TJ- Did the taxidermist freeze-dri the velvet? or use some other form of preservative?
Formaldehyde is not reccommened any more due to safety consernes for household residence. Mike

Mike, yes it was freeze dried like a turkey head.
Looks AWESOME! Great deer!!
sweet :clapper:
Beautiful animals, nice job!!!
Awesome lookin mount TJ! Wish you coulda saved that hunk of velvet that was hangin down off of him when you shot him....I'll save judgement on the "red" till I see him in person, but can guarentee Larry's normal quality is there.
Congrats again! Cant' wait till season opens again and can't wait till' Larry has my mount done in April !
Yeah Mike thats actually a funny story. He said while he was working on it his yellow lab snatched it off and ate it. Hahaha.
Awesome looking mount. I only hope mine comes back half as nice...Mike
very cool
Man,
He needs to feed that dog more often!!! He's gotta be "real" hungry to be eatin yer velvet!!!!!!! Good thing he didn't gnaw off a tine or two!! :biglaugh:
TJ that is sweet....really like the velvet look.
I didn't think that I would like a velvet mount. Your buck changed my mind. Very Very nice!!!
You sure chose the right taxidermist Tom, Larry Thomas and his wife are old friends of mine. He began mounting my critters years ago when he was a Louisville firemen. The guy keeps getting better and better, doesn't he? I took Fred Pape bearing hunting one year when he took his first bruin. I immediately INSISTED that he have Larry do the mount. He never regreted that decision! Larry mounted the bear in my TG avatar and too many other animals to recall. He has two javies and my daughter's buck up at his place right now. Guys are always asking me about my mounts, "Who did those, they looks so real??" Excellent taxidermy work and great people.
Yeah Gary, Genie is a great lady for sure. Glad to know you use them as well. I have six mounts they have done now and the extra $75-$100 is definitely worth it to me.
very cool, looks like you have a bunch of nice mounts. the velvet partially on was a great choice :)
TJ
Very impressive!!! Like it was said earlier - lots of character!!
You did good leaving the velvet on. Thanks for sharing. Now if I could just get out early enough to get one for my wall.
Excellent!
Here is a trail cam photo I got of him from last August.
