Title: Veterans
Post by: Chris40 on January 20, 2010, 02:44:00 PM
From reading posts on here, I've noticed there is a lot of Vets that frequent this site.

I'm retired Navy.  22 yrs (Hull Tech.  The sailors will know what that is)

Veteran of Desert Storm and the Iraq War.  Stationed mostly in Norfolk Va and a little stint in south east Georgia.

I did't get to bowhunt much while I was in, spent a lot of time deployed and at sea.  Feels great to have some time to get out in the woods finally.

Give a post of who and where you served our great country.  Thanks in advance of your service and sacrifice.

Washington Army National Guard 1997 - 2005

A Co, 181st Brigade, WARNG, Actived to Regular Army, 14th Combat Engineers, 555th Engineer Group, Fort Lewis, Wa.  Served 18 months as an Army combat engineer, 12 months in Iraq 2003 / 2004 with the 3rd ACR.  We were light engineers ( wheeled ) attached to an armored battalion.  Spent the war shooting it out and blowing things up while running around in light skinned aluminium dump trucks. We were the fastest and quietest company in the battalion.  Guess who got all the QRF missions and raids.

It was a lot of fun and a lot of bad times all rolled into one wild ride.   We had a 3 month train up and demob. on either end of the tour in the sand box.  I got out at the end of my 8 year contract.

U.S. Marine Corps. First Mediterranean float I went to England, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece,  Israel, and Mombasa Kenya. My second Med float we got dropped off in sunny Beirut Lebanon for 4 months of R&R. My third float was a NATO, I got to see Norway, Denmark, and Amsterdam Holland. My MOS was communications, I was attached to an artillery battery for 4 years, then a wing squadron for my last three years. In the middle there somewhere I did a year and a half teaching at a comm school. I don't regret a day of my service. I'll admit a few times I said to myself "what the hell am I doing here".

Active Army from 97 to 02.  Most time was spent in aviation, Apache's, as a fueler... driving 2500 gallon fuel tankers around. Spent most my time in TX, some in KY and a short stint in Bosnia.  Never played in the sand box, which was bittersweet (didn't really want to go but didn't want my buddies to be there w/out me.)  My wife also served 4 years, same time frame as a truck driver (moving tanks mostly) TX and KY also.

Picture from the dedication of the Veterans Memorial in my hometown on Veterans Day 2009.
