What do you do with your elk ivory? Put up some ideas that you have or pictures of things that you have used them for.
Back in the days when men wore pocketwatches and not wristwatches, elk ivories were very popular as watch fobs. Especially among members of Elk Lodges.
I'v seen some nice rings, and some string ties, and neck chains, if you are into jewelery. :bigsmyl:
How about a inlay in your bow, on a quiver or knife handle?
I have seen a Zipper with them inlayed into the riser. They looked awesome.
I like what Steve at Voodoo Kustom Bows is doing :)
He builds one of the most awesome looking TDs I've seen! All Elk risers :)
I had two rings made, one for each of my daughters. The jeweler used just the top (crown?)
of the ivory. The shape was sort of oval-like, with the surface of the ivory flush or slightly above the gold ring. Not gaudy at all; a beautiful ring. This was about 9 years ago, I think I paid about $225 per ring.
As I recall the jeweler had to do the work after hours, because the grinding of the ivory had a pretty bad smell to it. Wish I could post a picture for you but neither ring is available to me. I would do it again, they turned out beautifully.

I inlaid one tooth on the side of my knife sheath. Don't know how to post pix.
Rocky Mt. Scrimshaw in Colorado make some beautiful stuff with Elk Ivories,Bear Claws,Cat Claws etc.
I'm waiting for a few good ideas. I don't wear a necklace, (not that there's any thing wrong with that) but some like to wear them on a chain or leather string.
Rings are nice.
That Zipper with the Elk Riser is awesome looking bow!!! :clapper:
I like to hang the pair from my last elk on a leather thong around my neck while elk hunting. It reminds me of past hunts and puts me in the right mind set to make the next kill. It also reminds me that I am carrying a piece of that animal and every time I succeed in the field an animal losses its life.
I have several sets on a braided rope necklace with a mountian lion claw and a some bear claws.
This is because You stik with the same girlfriend.LOL
They are in my freezer don't know what to do with them?
I have half a dozen lying around. I was going to make some cribbage pegs out of one to complement a moose antler cribbage board a made, but a buddy told me that ivories are hollow. Can anyone confirm or deny if they are in fact hollow?
Yes, hollow. My wife had a ring made for me from one. The jewler sent the remainder of the ivory back in a zip lock bag and it was hollow. Lin

This is what mine look like now. I have another set to add though. I know there are some very creative people here and I was wondering what others do with their elk teeth.
elk ivory will be solid in a very old elk and even then you may find that there is a small hole in the center.
newb question.. are those teeth?
Are they really ivory or do hunters just refer to them that way? Do other critters have ivory (besides elephants and whales)?
They are real teeth.
These are the types of ivory.
Types of ivory
Elephant and mammoth ivory from the tusks of bull elephants and mammoths. Walrus ivory from the tusks of a bull walrus. Sperm Whale and Killer Whale ivory Narwhal ivory Hippopotamus ivory Warthog ivory Elk Ivory from the bugling teeth of bull elk.
Saved the Ivories from my 1st Trad kill elk knowing someday I would use them.Got Jack Kempf to inlay an Ivory in the riser of my Kwyk-Styk. Turned out looking pretty cool. That my friends is one of coolest things I have seen...mine is a necklace but perhaps it can be converted to something like that!
Here are a couple I have done. One in a friends longbow I built for him, the other on mine. Neither ivory is mine :(
One of these days....

A man in Alaska made this knife for me and I had him put a brass lined hole in the handle.....Ken Jeffries (http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac265/lurefish100/Picture1167.jpg)
Wow! That is cool. Wish I had the opportunity to get one myself. Those are very nice.
For you guys that shoot cow elk, don't forget.....cows have them as well.
Well I'm relieved....I thought elk grew tusks while I wasn't looking.
I'm not into jewelry and such but figured they'd look good on the hat band.
