Title: Coyote in a tree stand
Post by: Kip on January 18, 2010, 09:50:00 PM
I was in a tree stand Sunday morning and saw something I almost couldn't believe.I hunt some bottom land hardwoods with a solid palmetto understory from three feet to eight feet high.We climb high to look down into it.I heard some crashing noise which means either a buck chasing a doe,a spooked deer or hogs on the move about 200 yards away.I then saw movement about 70-80 yards away in almost the same direction,a tan reddish animal but then saw it climb one of the hundreds of leaning or down trees from the last hurricane.I though a bobcat but after looking in my monocular I saw it was a coyote climbed about 6-7 foot high and looking also in the direction of the noise. It was the weirdest feeling both of us predators up in each a tree waiting for game to show itself. After about 3-minutes he got down headed their way and in a few more minutes I heard a deer blow and move way out of range. Here is the terrain we both hunt I can understand why they are climbing trees to hunt also.Kip

Cool story! I've seen goats in trees, makes sense a coyote could do it!

I've seen gray foxes climb, but never a red. That's one reason reds are such easy prey for yotes.

Neat to witness Kip.  Yep, looks like Cajun palm trees.

Coyotes can learn. When they grow thumbs, we are all in a heap of trouble.

Seen a Black and Tan Coon Hound climb 35' out a leaning tree 15' up over a swamp.  There was no coon at the top and the dog couldn't turn around........SPLASH!

I have seen that too and was amazed. It was a dead tree leaning at about 45 degrees, big ole yote walked right up and sat down. Stayed there for ten minutes, then kept on keeping on.

I also saw a gray fox climb about 10-12' up a tree, but a coyote, I'd never guess they would.

The first time I've hunted out of a groundblind I caught a yote slippin through the woods. I lip squeeked off my hand and he jumped into a blowdown about 20 yards away. He was 5 feet off the ground lookin to see where the noise came from. Unfortunately a doghouse blind is not bowhunter friendly, even with those short wheel bows, and my elbow hit the back of it and yote was gone. Very cool to watch though.

One of the great reasons to hunt, besides the hunt itself is getting out in the woods to witness things like that.  Thanks for sharing the story and pict.

I have never seen that either but I'm not surprised. The intelligence and adaptability of coyotes is amazing.

Where I hunt is about half open prairies and half timbered mountain country.Where the timbered mountain meets the prairie is a transition zone, where the pine trees are smaller and sparsely spaced.White tailed jack rabbits like this edge zone. These rabbits are big,as much as 8 lbs for a large one and they turn white in the Winter.

Several times,I have watched a pair of coyotes hunt this edge zone in tandem.Always,it is exactly the same. The terrain is gently sloping and one coyote is high and one is directly below it about 20 yds. They cruise through the sparse pines in tandem, just like 2 shotgunners, waiting for one to jump a rabbit toward the other.

When one coyote starts to get ahead of the other,it sits down and waits for his partner to get even with him again, then he stands up and they continue their hunt.I was amazed the first time I witnessed this.As soon as they started,I new exactly what they were doing.

I never did get to see a chase but I have seen them hunt that same strip at least 2 more times and it is always the same.An amazing animal.

My old dog, Sheba the Magnificent, would climb a catalpa tree out behind the gun store, just to have me make much of her. It had a short, thick, leaning trunk and a bunch of branches that she would walk out on. She was a shepherd/husky mix.
Here is a shot of her surveying the banks of Accotink Creek from the middle of a fallen tree.

She looks like a damn fine dog!

When I had Walker Hounds they would run 15-20 feet up a tree leanin'at a 45-50 deg angle after a coon, and think nothing about jumpin' out and carrying right on with the chase.

Pretty cool to see a yote up a tree!

A few years ago one of my neighbors had a Chesapeake, there was a squirrel that barked at him all afternoon.  When his owner took him off his chain he shot up the nearly vertical maple tree and caught the squirrel.  he laid across a large branch and ate the whole squirrel.  His owner a single girl was horrified and screamed for help. Her dog, Bear, didn't need any help at all.  He had no problem skinning and eating that squirrel.  But the funny part was the hysterics the girl went through when ever Bear dropped a piece of hide to the ground.  When he was done he just skidded back down the way he went up.
My cocker spaniel climbs trees all the time when we are squirrel hunting, he learned to jump out so I can catch him.
