Whitetails can be the most aggravating critter to hunt I think........
2 days ago, I went out hunting in the afternoon and and had 8 does around me. I had the wind and was well camoed. they never even looked at me, but all jsut stayed aout about 30 yds or so and just played, chased each other, browsed and in general put on quite a show for roughly 45minutes........
Today I go out again.....same stand, same time. Nothing till just about dark. then 2 does come racing in to me, pause briefly, and walk off behind me. I hear crackling coming from the same direction and before I know it, I have 4 bucks----not little bucks----4 NICE bucks walking around me, 5-10yds away. One had mass bigger than my wrist 1/2 way out his rack. Another had G2's about a foot high, etc....etc....etc...... They offered so many shots and all I can do is watch and laugh: I shot my buck during muzzle-loader season--a nice 8 pt. but smaller than all 4 of these. By the way, I hunted this farm for several weekends during Oct-Nov. and I don't think I saw ANY of these 4!!!!
Oh well, a fun, but chilly evening......time to find some more does! :archer:
Ben :coffee:
Sounds like a fun time, and a good way to get the old adrenalin pumping. :campfire:
Great couple days on stand for a late season hunt. If it was easy or made sense enough to figure them out all the time none of us would do this thing we call bowhunting.
time for your weekly dose of elk fever ben..... :goldtooth: :biglaugh:
That's what so special about hunting... you just never know what you are going to see.
Yeah..................it was a great experience both times. It was pretty cool just to watch how they act when they are relaxed, especially after all the spaced -out gun-hunting seasons we have here in Ohio.--none of them new I was there or that they were close to any danger!
Larry----ain't got time for elk fever yet: I still have deer to hunt for another 2 weeks! :D
You have a lot to look forward to next fall Ben....get out and get those sheds when the time is right
Wish we had a season this late....

Mature whitetail bucks in the late seasons are quite an accomplishment in my book. Just getting that close to those fellas is a victory!
I couldn't close the deal, but got close to a dandy this late season. I was pretty tickled about that. Have yet to fill that chapter.
I couldn't agree with you more, One of my many deer frustrations this year was a monster buck i had an encounter with in Nov in Illinois. I was getting my gear together on a 2-track at the edge of my spot and i was fumbling around my pack when i looked up to see a rut drunk huge 14 point with a drop tine staring at me from 25 yards away :scared: (thats what my face looked like) he was huge probably in the 180 class! i slowly grabbed my bow and started to nock an arrow when he had enough and took off. So I ran
around the bedding area to a tree i had set up to cut him off and sure enough ten minutes after i got in my tree he came down the trail and was going to come by at 10 yards when he got to 25 he stopped and caught some of my wind and stood there for 20 minutes before turning and leaving, never offering a clear shot. It was very exiting and frustrating at the same time , but in the end the chase is why I and we love it so much.
cool wishing my season was still open
Thats what keeps us doing it over and over and over again. Its the thrill Kinda like dating was before we were married.Just the site of a deer brings me back.
Guru----definitely want to find those sheds, esp. the one with the heavy mass!
"Morningstar" and "ipcjon2"--- that was qite a thrill... awsome looking down on 4 big bucks who have no idea I was there and telling myself to remember this area for next year! What made it even better, is that many people at work have been telling me how all the bucks they are seeing are dropping their racks----course they are not out hunting, just road-watching since gun-season.
"Boone..." ---- that had to be quite a rush though! If you were wearing buck lure, you might have been able to get him with your knife
