Back sometime in the 1980's there was a video (VHS) that towards the end of it, our "one and only" Barry Wensel had a rope with some antlers tied to it. He was on the ground, running from tree to tree......peeking out from behind the tree's trunk.
Finally the camera-man says "What are you doing?" Barry says "Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.....I'm trolling"
Does ANYONE remember the name of that video? And even more so......if they do, and if they still own it.......I would love to have it. I would be more than willing to pay for it, and shipping.
That scene has been "burned" into my mind every since I saw it the first time. A true classic.
Thank-You.......in advance.
Winterhawk1960
I look through some, maybe it is on one of their DVDs, along with some other funny stuff.
I am not sure, but was it Hunting October Whitetails?
It was "Bowhunting October Whitetails or High Noon Bucks"....you can get a copy of both on DVD at http://www.brothersofthebow.com./.
>>--Ron--<>
it was the instinctive shooting video or high noon bucks. i remember Rick Blase shoots a little spike buck in a corn field from the ground, there were some other cool hunts too. i might still have it, i was a teenager when i got it, but i will check around. some of my favorite videos!
I think the guys above are right Oct. whitetails. I laughed when I saw it the first time and still laugh when I see it today....good stuff...they were thinner then...lol!!!!!

That was my thought also. These videos were some of the very FIRST ones that I ever watched. I remember renting them and watching them in my Mom and Dad's living room TV. Back in those days a person most likely only had one TV.....let alone more than one VCR. Doesn't seem that long ago, but I guess it was.
There was also another scene involving Barry that I distinctly remember. There was snow on the ground and they were driving deer. Barry was a "stander".......and this buck comes busting through and he shoots and mmmmm......mmmmm.....misses. He calmly and collectively goes over and retrieves his arrow, cleans all the snow off of it and returns it to his quiver. When the "drivers" come through, one of them asks "Did you see anything?"....Barry says, "Nope......nothing". The guy goes, "You had a shot, didn't you?".....Barry goes "No, look at my arrows"....and they were all clean.
Now remember......this was all taking place in front of a video camera.....LOL.
I have all the DVD's that thy sell off the Brothers of the Bow website, I'm gonna have to get them out and "make sure" that these aren't on any of them, but I am pretty sure that they aren't.
Winterhawk1960
There was a set of Videos that came out at the same time..I forget the exact names.
WT's fast and far..was about shooting deer on the move and at long range and the rest were also subject specific... Rutting areas.. etc. etc..
Anyway I think the end of each video in that series had the scene your speaking of.
I tried typing in BBW productions but all I get is videos of hefty chicks....lol
I'm pretty sure it's the video "High Noon Bucks" I have the others, & it's not in those. Imo, those early videos w/the Wensels, Rick Blase & others are the best!
Those two guys are not normal....especially Barry. I think his elevator got stuck early on.
Let me say this about those two characters. I have been watching their antics over many decades, and how they convey their methods of bowhunting, as well as their affection for the sport. A young archer today, would do well to emulate what they have done....and I don't mean chasing big racks, I mean being true icons for the sport of bowhunting.
These guys are folks who show the sport in the proper light....respectful, even when goofing around, knowledgeable, and never braggard about their successes. They are both a light to follow, not to snuff out; they are ambassadors in the real sense of the word. I can tell you I'm grateful we have them in this sport.

Well said George (as usual). The hunting youth of today need to absorb much more than what they are getting by way of hunting TV hornporn. These two guys walk the talk........let there be light!!!
Ah yes.........No way am I touching on the first part about Barry (he's bigger than I am!).
George, are you trying to get back on the Wensels Christmas card list? If it's any consolation Barry and Gene I agree with George.

George, my sentiments exactly. My two sons (27 & 23 yrs) still pull out those old videos prior to deer season every year. Grew up on them.
Thrilled when they got to meet them at K-Zoo Expo yrs ago......remember the Rambling Rednecks?
October whitetails was the first hunting video I ever saw. I don't think I have ever seen a better one.
Thanks for the nice comments guys. Back in the early/mid '80s when normal VHS tapes were 90 plus minutes and selling for $39.95 (remember VHS OR Beta?) we brought out what was referred to as "The Technique Series". They were only a half hour and sold for $10. I'm sure it was at the end of one of these but can't frankly remember which one. I'm thinking it was on the one called "Tips" or something like that. I know I have a copy somewhere in storage but I can't put my fingers on it right now. I lost a bunch of that stuff in my fire in '99 so hopefully someone out there is old enough to have one on hand. Thanks. BW
I got a 2 disc set of Bowhunting October Whitetails. It is on there. I got it from 3River or Kustom King. Both the antler rattling and the corn field hunt are on there.
Praise from George Stout is earned and revered.
I think this is all a myth! Barry running? That just doesn't sound right!
Whenever I practice a running deer shot at my range, I always think of that video with the rolling tire and balloon inside and how I was (and still am)in awe of them.
It is a cult classic for me, I remember renting it.
I still watch it every season at least.

Biggie, I gotta agree with you.
Eric,
Thanks, I was sure that was the one. I'm gonna re-watch mine and will let ya'll know, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't on there. That was just "too good" of a scene to have "not remembered".

Now that kinda has a ring to it, "The Wensel Cult" ..........they have come to have quite the following.
Winterhawk1960
i know I saw what your talking about and thought for sure it was on one of the 2 discs. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. Deffinately worth the watch to find out.
George nobody could have said it better. I have loved these two guys most of my bohunting life there vids were the first ones I had ever watched and is the gold standard by witch all others are judged against. I have gone to see them every time they are around my area and its a joy to hear speak. My girlfriend has been a trad girl for less than one year and after seeing one of there vids is a big fan and wants to have lunch with them. That has to say something when a newbe with all the archery choices out there see's how special these two are to the sport. Widow
Terry, you bet Barry can run. One of the videos has him chasing an armadillo. Now that was a hoot. It did get away but he gave it good go. The armadillo was better in the corners but Barry could keep up on the straights.
My father had that video when I was a kid, Man I must have watched it a billion times. Wonder if he still has it around.
It's called Techniques for Instinctive Bow Shooting. I still have it.
Yea Bowhunting October Whitetails was the first hunting video i had ever seen many many years ago.
I still cant get that music out of my head.
Littlejake might be right. I remember I was a little embarrassed when that particular tape came out. I recall stepping off the plane and they shoved a microphone at me saying "tell us all you can about instinctive shooting". No time to gather my thoughts, etc. I recall a lot of my opinion and some stuff I thought important was cut and left on the editing room floor. I wasn't real pleased with the final product. I got over it though. Ha. BW
Ol' Herdbull must of been paying close attention. Uncle B, you should have patented that "trolling" technique--it is now "puppet fighting" HAH!
it was tips & techniques, Tricking Whitetail Bucks,
Jeff is right.
I still have it. I love it when Barry takes the apple cider in an atomizer(intended to spray in the air for cover scent), and sprays it in his mouth for a refreshment.
I still laugh when I see it every time!

I think you may be right. I went upstairs to the spare bedroom and under the TV stand I have about 50 old VHS Tapes. I ran through the end of October Whitetails I and II and also Instinctive Shooting and did not see it there.
Boy, I forgot how slow and loud VHS recorders are. They moan, groan, hiss and sputter and it takes forever to fast forward through a tape.
I have some good old ones like Bob McQuire walking through the woods talking about deer hunting dragging a microphone with a cord on it :)
I am going to have to watch some of these old tapes soon.
25 years ago my new bride told me my honeymoon was going to end quickly if she had to watch how to hunt a corn field one more time! It couldn't have effected her to bad, she took me to New Brunswick bear hunting this fall on our 25 anniversary. She even came and sat with me every day in the treestand. I loved the Wensel's videos and wish I could go back to those days when hunting was the reason people made videos. Today it's all about sponsors and what something scores. Thank You Barry and Gene!!
GLENN
Barry, you're the best! Gene...are you kidding...no tags filled this past season? No hero pics from my hero? Were you holding your mouth right? :^)
Have any of you guys seen the one where Barry explains the REAL reason he wears his hat sideways?? It's so he can bury his face more fully into the nearest watermellon!!
Grew up watching the same videos everyone is discussing. I am fortunate to live in an area with plenty of deer and was very successful with compound in my early years. Been hunting with the recurve for 12 years now and have had tag soup a few times, but mostly due to my choosing to pass on young deer in general. I took my son to the kzoo expo a few years ago to meet Gene and Barry. (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f217/drr324/7af86cd5.jpg)
I have always been in awe of the way Gene and Barry stay grounded in life. They seem to truly be blessed with great friends, great hunts, and I enjoy reading all the posts they are a part of. I have finished reading both books, and have started re-reading Genes again. I continue to squirrel away a few dollars in hopes of making a trip with my son to hunt texas with them, as this is truly one very high on my wish list- spend a few days in a camp with the 2 guys I most admire in our sport.....
My favorite Wensel funny is where they are examining a pile of bear scat and both end up tasting it. Now that's funny!
ttt- for Barry
Marty did Barry REALLY say he wanted to get in the 300 post club????

Lol - that's the one on Bowhunting October Whitetails (2, if I recall) - not the trolling thing. Great stuff!
Biggie- He never said that, but I wonder if he's thinkin it.
.... dang after all theses years ... I'm still dragging antler ... and no deer :( !!! I have that tape somewhere ...let me see if I can still find something to play it on...lol!!!
Those videos cost me many an arrow back in the day. My bro-in-law and I watched them and then spent lots of hours - and bent/lost many arrows - trying to bust a balloon inside a rolling tire.... :knothead:
ttt for Barry
it said you Wensel fans...sorry I've not seen the video your asking about but I would love to plug Uncle Barry's book.If you ai'nt got one yet you better get em while there hot outstanding read.Gene and Barry are two of the best of the best in our world guys. They understand who we are and I love for that.Make sure and pick up a copy of both Uncle Barry and Uncle Gene's book.
