Title: draw length vs. height ? REVISED!!
Post by: shortstroke 91 on January 16, 2010, 03:06:00 PM
I'm 5'5" and #150 (little feller) but I have a 30" draw length. Is this common or are my arms just too long for my body? I might mention that I anchor with my thumb behind my jaw bone (3 under)but my index finger is still in the corner of my mouth and my nose touches the fletching.

Sorry for all the confusion After measuring on different bows my draw is actually only 29.5", the bow I got 30" from has a beefier riser and it measured 30" but all others are 29.5". Measured my wingspan last night and it's right at 70" that's 5" more than I am tall. AND YES IT'S HARD TO FIND A SIZE MEDIUM SHIRT WITH EXTRA LONG ARMS!!

Ahh nuckle dragger like myself. Some people have a longer wing span than normal. As a rule your wing span (finger tip to finger tip)is the same as your hight. I bet if you check yours it will be longer

I'm 6'3" and draw 30" with a low wrist bow. I'm a little narrow across the shoulders, a 42-44 jacket fits me if the sleeves are long enough.

with regards to draw length, what matters most is how you aim and your upper body posture and alignment when at full draw, noting that you should have good back tension.  no back tension = no good.

When I shot target competition with my BW target bow, I eventually had a 29" draw, until I saw a picture of myself. I draw 26" plus a little with longbows and cannot shoot recurves at all with deep grips.  I have seen some with longer arms and I have seen some that look like they are trying to fall over backwards like me.  Either way if it works for you great. I sometimes wish that my draw was longer, myself, but it does not work for my longbow form.

I'm 6'2" and draw right under 30".  5'5" with a 30" draw....you must have to have your shirts specially made!  Well in this sport I would say that you got a lucky genetic break.  I've had some of my "not as tall" friends tell me that they sure wished for a longer draw.

I'm 5-11' 1/2" , My wing span is just shy of 6' 6" , DL is almost 31". Good for shooting a bow, bad for finding clothes that fit and ARE still in style. Oh well, life goes on

Shortstroke, you were built for bowhunting brother!!!   I've always considered myself short armed; I'm 5'10" and my draw length is 28.5" to 29" depending on the grip.

I'm 5'7", 52" chest, used to draw 30" before shoulder surgery on both sides.  Now have a draw lenght of 28 1/2.  Been pulling these things since 1964 possibly my arms stretched?     ;)

I do know that I stopped in at Raptor Archery... draw lengths came up during our conversation and Ted could not believe mine until he measured it.     :biglaugh:

My comments have pretty much been posted.
5'8" 174# 34" waist 31" inseam and 29" at full draw.
My little brother is 6' 215# 35"waist 30"inseam and 28" at full draw.
Good thing all these horses come in different colors, otherwise those Bowyers wouldn't know what to do with all thier spare time.

WOW...I'd like to see a pic at full draw...you must mega-long arms!!  I can't picture anyone your height having a draw that long unless they anchor behind their ear.......we're all built a little different...

5'10" tall, 29 1/2" draw.

And it IS difficult to find a dress shirt with correct sleeve lenght, and a neck hole that doesn`t choke me when it is buttoned to wear a tie, and NOT look like I`m wearing a tent.

Wingspan, 6' 2"...

Wingspan 6 feet, relatively wide shoulders, 27-28" draw depending on the bow. Can pull more, but lose form and get clothing interference in my arm pit at 29" when shooting long longbows.

if you anchor with your thumb behind your jawbone you are doing it wrong and your draw is actually 28 or less even.lots of compound shooters do this for speed but they cant shoot accurately with consistancy.i'm 6'2 and my draw is 30 and i have long arms.

I anchor with my the knuckle of my thumb on my jawbone and my middle finger in the corner of my mouth.  I really like the two point anchor and I find the jawbone/thumb to be a much more repeatable anchor.  It seems like my mouth might be in a different position on every shot, or the thickness of my glove prevents me from feeling a solid anchor point.  Whereas if I keep my mouth closed that corner of my jawbone is in the same spot every time and I can feel it better with the knuckle of my thumb...Mike

everybody has a special way they shoot.seems to work for them.i dont even draw to my full draw length when i practice my snap shooting, which i am getting pretty good at.my method of short drawing is also wrong but it is what it is i guess.i have watched compound shooters anchor there thumb on the back of the neck.unreal but they can shoot a much faster arrow this way.to me its about a well placed arrow rather than speed.i'll have to practice your method mooseman and see if i like it.

I am a little confused here.  I anchor with  my thumb knuckle right at corner of the back side of my jaw, index finger under the cheek bone and the middle finger just back and below tje corner of the mouth and against a tooth. When I shoot fast I tend to pull a quarter inch longer both right and left handed.  It is important to not get the feeling of my jaw bone holding the bow, but instead get the feeling of a stretch when I am at anchor to keep from jamming the anchor.  With a naturally bent bow arm when shooting straighter gripped longbows, all of the alignments fall right into place.  When I shot target form I too put my thumb behind my neck, just cannot even imagine doing that anymore for hunting.

5`9 246# 29.5 IN. DRAW 52 in.chest. when I started shooting 6 yrs. ago had a 27.5 in. draw, as long as bows are under 60# my draw has grown to current 29.5 in. anchor middle finger corner of mouth

6'2", 27.5 TO 28 DL depending on the grip.  I couldn't get comfortable or consistent with my anchor point using the corner of my mouth, now I'm using thumb knuckle on cheek bone.  It shortened up my draw length, but I'm shooting much more consistently.

I'm 6'2" and got a wing span of 76.5" and I shoot 30".  Back in the day when I was working in bow shop I found that shoulder width, arm length and palm size all must be factored in when figuring draw length when mesuring wing span.  Also the amount of bend a shooter holds in their bow arm as well as amount of lean they cant their bow.
