Title: Feedback: Military desert camo
Post by: Arwin on January 16, 2010, 02:33:00 PM
Just picked some up super cheap. It's been in the back of my head for a very long time how this stuff would work great because of it's open pattern.
I didn't get the 6 color stuff with the chocolate colors in it, this stuff is the 3 color with more tan, gray and a couple splashes of dark brown.

I have this pattern here in a hoodie and I think it does great for late season when the leaves are on the ground. Especially on sunny days.

Works great in some western regions - sagebrush flats - drier open and mixed timber regions, high country and alpine areas.  Use the pants all the time due to double knees and double seat.

Enjoy!

Shoot straight, Shinken

Yep that is the pattern.
Jon, I got the last of the large at a sale. It is the rip-stop material, should hold up for a long time.

Does anyone have a pic of it being used in the woods or on a hunt?

I used to hunt in standard green woodland camo BDU's. I think it's decent stuff for big game.

I use it because it was issued to me, and sits in my closet.  It can be a little noisy still hunting.

The digital camo pattern is great in both woodland and desert.Try Colmans military surplus on line.

I still think the old 6 color "chocolate chip" desert pattern is one of the absolute best for hunting my beloved Badlands.  I have quite a bit of it, for that reason.

The 3 color rreplaced the 6 color.  IMO it was a step backward both for the military & for hunting...

I almost got the 6 color but am experimenting with the most open pattern I can find.

I'm trying to see if shadows cast on this camo by sticks and limbs makes it even necessary to add dark lines to camo.
Deer got me to thinking about this and how well they can blend it at times. Out in the open, you wouldn't want any dark lines that make you stand out, only subtle tone and pattern changes to help you melt in.
If you are hunting in enough cover, the sticks and stuff around you will cast shadows on your clothing if it's light enough. Up in a tree you want to match the sky more than anything.
Anyway, it's January and a LONG time till turkey season. I have time to play with stuff....    :biglaugh:

I have a few pair, It's great, I kept all my issued Desert, and Woodland BDU's.  I even have some of the old solid green jungle, which will never fit into again.  Never had a chance to get some of the digi stuff.

Aren't deer color blind?

So would that make the pattern much more important than it's color?

If I'm correct, seems the military camo would work just fine for deer.

Most birds are very aware of color so it might be more of an issue with turkey.

I wore the 3 color desert camo DCU's for 12 months straight.  Doesn't do a Da#% thing for scorpions and camel spiders they always seem to find you.  It defintely did the job for hiding you from locals and wildlife.  You could even sneak up on feraql dogs in it.  In light colored and desert environments, it works great.

I use the pants all the time, but mostly because they have the double knee and seat fabric and cargo pockets.  I wear them or old khaki pants in the early archery season, as it is usually still pretty warm in late August & September.

Never wore them deer hunting, but did when dove hunting in GA.  My hunting partners warned me not to fall asleep, afraid they would never find me in the cut cornfield.

Works great walking the standing corn.

Mine was issued twice...Fall of '93 and summer of '95, they told me it was a vacation. Funny it didn't feel like a vacation.

Very good point, Arwin.  Please let us know how your experiments turn out.

I used that original,6 color stuff with the brown in it,here a lot and it is about as good as it gets in a lot of this country,as far as pattern, color and contrast.Maybe not as good in the dark timber but in the rocky, brushy, broken country,it is great. It has the contrast that keeps it from turning into a solid blob at a distance.

Anyone have large pants like Oliverstacy is showing that they want to sell? I use them while on the desert hunting arrowheads.

Let me know.

Thanks

I use it in NJ after the leaves turn it works great. I have read somewhere that even when leaves are still green there is still more brown than green in the woods. Food for thought

Here are 2 pics...wasn't sure of the camo type. My hunting partner Bamboo in similiar pants and ASAT and I'm standing with a Desert Camo sweater.
