Title: Sharpening Heads??
Post by: Cmalone1 on January 14, 2010, 04:50:00 PM
I didn't really know where to put this but since i'm going to be hunting hogs with them i figured i would put it here..

I have some magnus IIs and zwickeys coming...and i'm wondering what a good sharpner to put a SCARY sharp edge on them...i am using them for hog hunting but will prob use them on deer next fall...so i want something i can keep them really sharp all the time...i will be using broadhead sheaths to keep them sharp in my back quiver...

I have heard that to finish them off strop the blades and it will put the best edge you can get!!

any info would be great guys!!

Thanks,
Coty

Yeah KME or a Lansky will do it. Lansky is 20 bucks at your local Academy.

anybody know where i can get a KME for decent price? I have heard really good stuff about them but don't know if i wanna spend the 80 bucks for it...also should i get a leather strop and run my heads over it? i have heard of some kind of 21kt gold oil people use on their strops...

The KME sharpener is not as expensive as you say.  It's only that expensive if you get the stones as well.  You really don't need to get real expensive stones initially.  A coarse and fine stone, then some cardboard and you'll good to go.  It's a great product and the customer service can't be beat.

KME...Ron's product is the best out there if your not proficient at using a file. Plus, if you have any questions, call him and he'll take you through the process.

Get a KME. You'll be glad you did. Try posting in the classifieds forum on this website that you want a KME Broadhead Sharpener. That's what I did recently and got one pretty quickly. Awesome product and easy to use.

I've had a Lansky for years. It has always helped me put a great edge on my magnus broadheads or knives. If I were buying today, I may very well try KME. I've heard great things about there sharpener and customer service.

The KME is a w/o question a great system with one drawback, it's price.  The full set up is well in excess of $100.

The Tru Angle offerings are good too.  I know I have every one. They are a bit less costly than the KME.

What I've used for the last few years with excellent results is a G5 Sportsman's Sharpener (a carbide pull through type) and a leather strop.  I can take an out of the pack Magnus and with my G5 & a strop, have it scary sharp in well under 5 minutes. I've killed deer just peachy with broadheads sharpened on this set up.

It's KISS simple and affordable...

I had a lansky but not the skills to use it. Also I was always afraid I'd cut myself when sharpening w/ the lansky.

IMO, the KME is more user friendly and safer. I use my KME over sandpaper, not stones.  Sandpaper does not last as long as the stones but it works much faster for me.

Good luck

I got the KME knlfe sharpener instead of the broadhead sharpener and it works great on both BHs and knives. I'm not really sharpening impaired but my heads and knives are now really scarey sharp like never before. Ron's customer service is second to none in my experience!

IMO they all work, all you have to do is practice. File, and strop on cardboard, is as good as any-and you have to practice.
Some of the systems will require removing the head from the arrow to sharpen-that's OK for screw ons, and too much trouble for glue ons.
Check it out and remember to practice.
