Was wondering what everyone's bow arrow and broadhead setup were going to be for the 2010 spring turkey season? I will be totting my Bear Kodiak Magnum 55lb @28 Easton 2016 Gamegetters and 125gr Magnus head. Please post specs and previous kills with your setup, im getting cabin fever! I'm ready to climb in to my blind and make some calls.
mine will be a golden hawk 3 pc take down 48 at 28. Grizzley stick sitka's and WW elite 200 grain heads. And the secret weapon a john Pususta custom box call (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4016/4279076310_c72f2fd92c_o.jpg)
Morrison Shawnee with Arapaho limbs, 60", 60# @ 29", Goldtips with 160 Snuffer on the end.
This particular bow is pretty basic... Boo limbs and dymondwood riser... I'm thinking really hard about sending it to Bob and getting it dipped in Predator Green Deception and have 1/2 pinecones added to the grip. I don't use the bow exept for Turkeys in the spring or if it is pretty foul weather. Shoots right with my other Shawnees but isn't as pretty so I don't feel so bad exposing it to these conditions. And it doesn't have snake skins on the back which will foul up a turkey hunt in a heartbeat. Them birds really don't like snakes and they pick them out right quick, even if you are not moving!
Bear A mag with #1 limbs 47#, 1916 Eastons with 100gr magnus 2 blade. Will be using this set up out of a pop up blind.
Will depend on my mood the day I get up to go 8^). Typical deer hunting equipment though.
3pc 62" 48# Firefly with either a Heritage 150 + 50 brass wt
or a GT Traditional with a 2blade 150gr Muzzy stinger. My Matrix Darkhorse recurve blind and a simple hen decoy.
Terry
I was successful last spring using my old 55# Browning Cobra and Jack Kempf Longbow. Cedar shafts and 160 Gr Snuffers.... This year no hen decoy...bad luck...

I agree with George, same set up I use for whitetails although the bow may change from hunt to hunt.
Sounds like some good setups guys. Joe nice photos!! I had the same thing happen to me last year except the longbeard was in bow range I just didnt have the right window open!!
Black Widow PAX Bocote with Mammoth Tusk overlays 60" 54#@28, footed hexshaft, 160 gr Snuffer.
This will be my first year hunting turkeys with archery equipment. My set up is a 58" Whisperstik Voodoo 45#@28" that I'm gonna get dipped in Predator green deception, and I'll either be using 2016's or cedars. I haven't decided on a head yet but I'm thinking something with a big cut 1 1/2" or so. Any of you guys use those heads with the 4 big blades called the guillotine? I would rather use a fixed blade and shoot for the vitals but if I were skilled enough to make head shots they look like they'd be pretty good.
I'll be using my 50lb wolf long bow, shooting 2117s and 150 grain woodsmens for a total of 612grains of turn a turkey in side out madness!!!! hahah I hope so anyway.
I plan on hunting the last half of spring turkey here in Texas with Miss Faith!!!! Woo Hoo...
My first with trad, this year I'm going to set up a string tracker, I got that idea from Guru. Titan recurve GT3555 with a Bear two blade
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y275/420W/1241369728.jpg)
James, did you have difficulty recovering the bird? Is that why your going with the String Tracker? BTW very nice bird!
Unless I get something else worked up, I'll be shooting my Super Shrew 54# @ 30", CX150 W/170g Woodsman.
Eric
A Rick Ray custom longbow 58" 55# at 27". Works nice in ground blinds.Arrows POC with No Mercy broadheads.
My set up is simple a shopping cart and a super market...LOL :biglaugh:
I see turkeys all year(especially when deer hunting) and when I buy all those permits(it's ridiculous in NJ) they all seem to vanish.
Mossburg 3.5" magnum
I will be using a martin x-200 51 at 27 with gt 55/75 and 100gr brass insert and 125gr snuffer!!!!
Unless somthing changes, but don't see that happining... I will be shooting my Firefly TD 58" 50@28 with GT 3555 100grn brass insert, and a 125 grn snuffer up front.
I kinda like Biggie's idea!!!
My setup this year is going to be a heritage 58" classic recurve 60@26" with cedar arrows and Magnus I 160 gr. broadheads.
Not sure what bow, but I'll be in the double bull with a bunch of reeds and slate.
Don't know what bow I'll have but I hope I can actually hit them this spring.
Maybe one of my bows will call my name when it's up for the test!
Josh
If Dick Robertson gets it to me on time, I am sure he will, a 62" myrtle handle and myrtle lams over bamboo longbow 51 or so pounds at 26", Wapiti tapered shafts holding tan Bear Razorheads with the bleeder blades, my butt pad, one jake decoy, a pocketful of apples and another pocket full of various turkey calls. Oh yes and cotton camo with a nice coating permethrin. Gotta be careful not to ingest the stuff and keep it off my apples it's poison.
50lb# martin savannah,gold tip 35/55 arrrows,100 grain brass inserts,125grain muzzy phantoms.
QuoteJames, did you have difficulty recovering the bird? Is that why your going with the String Tracker? BTW very nice bird!
Yes I did, it walked away then flew off, it ended up landing in skunk cabbage totally hidden from view i had shot it first thing in the morning and found it at noon. If I had just given up it would have been a wasted bird, this season I'm going to follow a string  I would say the best spot to hit a gobbler is about the size of a fist unless you hit them in the head, they are plenty tough.

My black 56" 58# Kempf Kwyk Styk has been perfect turkey medicine the last couple years. Carbon arrows and 160 Snuffers on steel adapters.....
But this Bob Lee Dark Archer, that was sent to me last spring, worked just fine as well....54", 58#...same arrows....

I use what ever old broadheads I'm not using for deer hunting. I like three blades the best.
Great birds Curt! Do you have pretty good success with the strutting decoy? I tried a tom decoy last year, had a bird come running in only to spot the decoy and take off. I'm assuming because he wasnt the dominant bird in the area.
Shooting my usual Great Northern Super Ghost 51 @ 27, carbon arrow, 50gr insert w/ 150gr Woowsman, might be shooting new Javaman longbow, Bacote riser, Olive ash limbs, w/diamondback skins, hope he gets it done soon. Todd
My New SiegeWorks LongBow :archer: PLUS a WHOLE LOT of PRAYING and HOPING!!  :goldtooth:
That strutting decoy was the demise of all those birds except the last one...him and his buddy came running to a regular jake/hen decoy set-up.
The strutter worked awesome! Especially the first half of our season...
Guru, I guess that is where you had the decoy set up also, meaning that close to the blind right?
Planning on using my 56" Widow PSR, I know it well and it works great in the blind. I've got a 58" Kanati on order, so that will likely get some blind time as well. Either way, a Snuffer will be on the arrows.
No, They're just there for the pix. I have them out in front of me , with the strutter/or jake decoy exactly where I want to shoot. Because that's right where they go...straight to the rival!
I set him about 8 paces out....
Will start out in an ASAT leafy suit and switch to the Eastman leafy blind if I need to. Shooting a 58" Timberhawk recurve, 52.5#@28" with tapered cedars and 145 gr. Snuffers. I am ready for spring! Mike
Heres a few of my K-Mag. Looking foreword to using it in the blind this spring.

zipper sxt longbow, scored it's first boss gobbler last spring, when she was only a couple weeks old. 47 at my 29" draw/ 60". I will add that my yukon tracks blind is just as important to me, it is so big, I'm thinking of taking a cot with me this year for those looonnnggg sits.
I'll be using a 58# Kanati with a centaur big game head.
Strutting dekes work well!
My setup this year will be my morrison shawnee 58" 58lbs@28 with cedar shafts and WW heads. Can't wait till spring, yelp, yelp...
Has anyone tried a mechanical head for turks out of a trad bow? I'm not looking to get flogged but some of these heads look like they would work well for turks and smaller game. Just curious I guess. I would think the bigger the cut the better for an old gobbler.
Possible, but what would wing quills do to the head if they were snagged on impact.
I haven't decided, but will probably go with the 53# limbs on my chek-mate with grizzlystik woodies and 175 gr. woodsmans. Worked last year.

2Blade....I have the exact bow! Have yet to kill a turkey...period. I will harvest one this year with the stick and string this year I know it.
Horne T/D Brushbow 47 @ 28, GT 3555, and a Magnus 175 up front. I may try a Bullhead.
I will probably use a string tracker this season. Turkeys are incredibly tough if not spined or hit very well.
I'm excited about this spring's turkey season also. I have harvested 2 with a compound before.
This will be my first all trad year, so I am a little anxious to see how it goes...
My bow: Volcano one piece recurve, 58", 50# @ 28"
Arrows: GT 35/55's with 125 Phantoms, 100 grain brass inserts up front, 3 - 5" true flight feathers in rear.
Man, I love turkey season in the spring.
Can't wait!
Super Shrew 58" and 53@27 with AD shafts and muzzy phantoms.RC
Bear takedown with 50# limbs, 125 gr snuffers on POC arrows. That choice is easy. Now, what kind of call...?????
THAT is some Fine Turkey Hunting GURU!! :help: But Ya Did A FINE Job of It!! :notworthy:
These spring pics are helping cope with the gloomy winter weather. Keep em comin boys!!
Never thought about the quills messing up the mech heads. It might not but why chance it. After shooting and tuning my new to me Voodoo it looks like I'll be using 55-60 cedars with 190gr. VPA Terminators or 2016's with 200gr. Terminators.

Kwyk Styk 55#. 2018,160 snuffers = Dead Birds...
BW PSA III, Trad Only carbons with 100 grain brass inserts, string tracker and WW 125 grain broadhead.
The bow used to belong to Blacktailbowhunter. Can't wait!!!!
Trying to decide between my Toelke Chinook or my Black Swan Sniper, both short bows taht pack a punch. Now I just need a good blind.
