I did when I shot competition back in the 60's and 70's.  Been nearly 30 year since.

NO!  that's for paper punchers in a controlled shooting environment, and the benefits are dubious at best if you already have a good tab.  not at all needed for hunting, imo.

My friend uses a grafite stick (spilling), the ones they use to draw lines on metal sheets for cutting.

I use Montana Pitch Blend on my cordovan tabs. Keeps them supple and slick. Back in the old days when field archery was hot most guys  and gals that shot with a tab had a little powder dispensing contraption strapped to their belts or quivers. I used a glove and one of my mentors, who then was the NY State Field Archery Champ taught me to melt paraffin wax into the stalls of my glove and it seemed to make it a bit smoother to shoot and added some longevity to them. I also found that serving my string with monofiliament fishing line made for a cleaner release.

breathing that cant be good, every release there's gonna be a small "cloud" I would think.

I use calfhair tabs I make for myself. The hair kinda acts like a lubricant but wears out from prolonged shooting. Thats why I'm thinking about cordovan to get the longevity. The powder was used as a lubricant to smooth out the release. I really think the key to a clean release is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE........etc. But my fingers hurt!!!!!     :biglaugh:

I have used powdered soap stone, no odor, and gives a smooth dust free release.

+1 Montana pitch blend.  It makes the leather a little slicker and helps prolong the life of the tab.

No, my cordovan tab is slick already and seems to get slicker with age.

Hill and John Schulz never went out without powder. Hill preferred the lilac scented talc.  Myself I like the almond scented powder, it makes me smell pretty and it does give a slicker release.
