Lonnie,

Was that HS Black Widow you did a while back the "Oak Leaf" pattern?

I think I'm going with Predator brown on my hunting bow this year.  Going to look good with my outfitter camo clothing.

LOL

Mike

Actually I'm serious.

That is mighty nice! And it goes on right over the finish? Is there any going back if you change your mind in the future or are we talking paint? Does the product help protect wood from moisture?

Very nice look.

Thinking ...... very.......hard.....on...this!

Hopefully this price goes on for a month or so.....my deer season is still in full swing and can't part with my bow yet!!  :bigsmyl:

I REALLY like the Predator grey and brown patterns.................

reallly glad you opened this back up Lonnie!!  I'm gonna send my wifes bow and one of mine in real soon.  I like the Predator camo and I'm thinking carbon fiber or something else for hers.

How tough is this camo finish? Does it hold up well being out and about in the woods?
Title: Re: New Camo Dipping special
Post by: Blackhawk7204 on January 14, 2010, 06:25:00 PM
Steve, that is orange leaf.
NorthernCaliforniaHunter, The original finish has to be at least lightly sanded and a base coat of paint is applied for color and to make sure the wood is completely sealed and then the camo dip. After that dries it gets a few coats of clear to protect it.
Ben, the clear coat I use makes it as tough as a regular bow finish.
By the way, it can be removed by careful sanding just like a clear finish if you ever want to refinish it.

I have had one of Lonnie's camo finishes on some of my bows for about 2 years. The finish he uses protects the camo dip, I have no scratches etc in 2 years and I do not baby my bows. The only problem I have with the camo dip is picking out the type of pattern I want, they all look good.

No, we do not dip regular firearms.  The pictures on the website are of muzzle loaders, those we can do.
Bow quivers are an extra $25.

Post by: BEN on January 22, 2010, 10:23:00 AM
What is the best way to ship a recurve bow?

Also, any prep work needed(removal of side plate, rest, etc..)?

I really like the Predator camo---looking at the fall grey and brown deception. Anyone have a better pic of the brown deception on a bow? The pic  on Lonnie's website doesn't show much.....

Still need to keep my bow for about 2 weeks though-----deer season is still in swing and I'm zeroing in on a small herd of large does.

Title: Re: New Camo Dipping special
Post by: Blackhawk7204 on January 22, 2010, 08:01:00 PM
Ben, if it's a one piece recurve I would get an oversize box so you can put plenty of padding around the bow. Also I would use Priority mail, packages just seem to get there in better condition.
And yes, take everything off first.
Here is a better photo of brown deception.

Title: Re: New Camo Dipping special
Post by: wingnut on January 23, 2010, 07:26:00 AM
OH man!! That brown deception is the one.

Now I just have to get this new ILF riser finished and have it dipped.  Going to be my go to moose bow this year.

Mike
Title: Re: New Camo Dipping special
Post by: Blackhawk7204 on January 23, 2010, 08:05:00 AM
owlbait ,The dipping process starts with a base coat of paint for background color then the dip and then at least 2 coats of clear. Should be impervious to rain or dunkings.

You guys asking about shipping, go to the post office and they will give you tri-fold boxes.  You will need two of them for a bow.   The are very durable, free, and you ship the bow priority mail....and insure it.  It's not all that expensive, probably less than $20.00.

Post by: Blackhawk7204 on January 23, 2010, 12:31:00 PM
Oh, by the way using those little triangle boxes taped together is probably the surest way to have a bow damaged in shipping! I have never received a one piece bow shipped that way that the package was not severely damaged.

Those things are just not sturdy enough when you put 2 of them together. It's a miracle that the bows inside were not ruined.
Now if you reinforced them with a long stiff piece of wood you would be fine. Most people ship them in a 6" pvc sewer pipe. Just be sure to pad the ends very well and it would be almost impossible to get any damage.

Lonnie,
I didn't read every post so this might have been asked. What is the general turnaround time to do a bow?
I have a Bear magnesium take down I'm thinking of having you do. I think I'd like the handle done in Carbon Fiber and the limbs done in Leaf and Woods Mix. Is there an extra charge for two different prints? Would I have to do any prep work like sanding off old spray paint from the handle? I know I should take off the latches, window sight plate and side plate and grip, etc. Should I do anything else?

VA Bowbender, turn around is 1-2 weeks. Just take the stuff off and I'll take care of paint.
No extra charge for 2 different patterns, just be sure to put a note explaining how you want it with your bow.

Does the process have any effect on the original preformance of the bow, i.e. heavier draw weight??? And have you ever dipped a Black Swan with the metal riser? It really has a lot of "dimples" in it.  Thanks
Title: Re: New Camo Dipping special
Post by: VA Bowbender on February 02, 2010, 03:02:00 PM
Ok, here's some pics of the Bear magnesium riser and limbs I sent off to Lonnie.  I asked him to do the limbs in a burl and the handle in a carbon fiber. I did tell him if the burl wasn't one I cared for he could substitute for a camo pattern.

When the bow comes back I'll post the end result.

I got this bow used, I didn't do the damage. Someone made a really poor atempt at refinishing.

SkottyBoy, I've never seen any difference in performance. Even on A&H ACS limbs.
That dimpled surface you're talking about is just the paint. The metal underneath is smooth.

Well I asked you if you wanted me to do any prep work and you said no it would be fine.  You know the old expression...be careful what you ask for.

Important news! after this friday 2-12-2010. we will no longer be accepting any camo dipping work.
Big Jim's Bow Company has purchased Precision Hydrographics (camodip.net).
I will dip anything that gets here by friday and get it right back to you. After that all orders will be going to Big Jim's in Georgia.
Big Jim will be honoring the Tradgang special.

I will be partnering up with Jim Gainey of  www.blackcreekbows.com (http://www.blackcreekbows.com)

I appreciate the support from Tradgang and all it's members and looking forward to this new adventure.

Got the wifes bow today and it looks GREAT!!!  Thanks a bunch Lonnie!  Wish I'd had some different rest material, the beaver fur I put on it looks out of place.

That Bear was close to the roughest bow I ever dipped, but it did turn out nice. It really was mostly just the outer layers of finish that made it look so bad.
Once I sanded it down to the bare glass it only had a few minor problems.
