Remember a Tradganger who actually had his lab with him when he stalked or still hunted then used him to blood trail. The blood trailing thread jogged my memory a little. Anyone know this tradganger??
Thanks!
J
I remember the thread, A chocolate lab! That is one cool dog!
Both my lab-gals blood trail, find lost arrows, and retrieve arrows, but I never took them bowhunting. Might have to try that. I could remote sit them a couple hundred yards out from the stand and hand signal them in when I wanted them... :D
I have never needed my lab to follow a blood trail but she has saved me a lot of money in arrows. She has found dozens of arrows for me that I would never have found and saved me a lot of time in the process.
Here in Washington it is illegal to have a dog with you while hunting or carrying a weapon during hunting season. Check your state regs first.
Bridger, a yellow lab that's white found 3 deer and 2 bears this year. At 5 years old, it brings his total to 11 deer and 5 bears. While we were hunting on the western side of the state and in SD, he got 4 calls for blood trails on the eastern side of the state. He's got a rep.
This year when looking for a deer "that's dead in that field" that he couldn't find a guy that Bridger found two deer for said to the shooter, "if that deer was dead in that field Bridger would have found it." Made me feel pretty good.
I think the guy that you are talking about lives in Colorado. I am just got a few messages from him the other day. Super nice guy, and I think he hunts with his lab. They had a post about hunting in Utah this past fall.
That is Todd Thayne. Goes by just a hunter. As stated above, a great guy and a pretty good hunter :D Although I hear he uses guys from Kansas for bear bait! :biglaugh:
If I remember right his name is Todd. I think his Avatar name is just_a_hunter.
Ben's not big enough for bait.
Todd is a wonderful guy and Gauge his chocolate lab is awesome. Proud to call both of them my friends :clapper: :goldtooth:
Ben sure smells like bait sometimes :biglaugh: :jumper:
Check out Highlights of 2009, Todd has a thread on there when he is hunting with Gauge.

just a hunter, beautiful dog!
I've got a 6 mo old black lab I'm working with to blood trail. She is doing pretty well. But when she gets to blood she wants to lick it all up before she goes on to the next spot!

So does/did Gauge. I would let her go and mark the spot with ribbon until she gets the hang of things. The blood is like her treat.. Let her have it and let her lick the animal as long as it is safe. From the sound of things, I would say she is completely normal.
Good luck with your girl!
Todd
Love those labs!! Never even thought about using one to track deer, that is cool!
Pretty cool, I have never had a Lab but they are good looking dogs.
Now that is Cool!
Thanks for the tips! She's coming along just fine, but it's mostly her and not me. The only draw back is it's hard to keep her out of the way when I bring a deer home cause she wants to be right on top of it!
Wow great thread.
Old Gauge Is a hell of a dog and a good friend. He elk hunted with us last fall and was unbelievable. I've never seen a more well mannered dog and he follows every hand signal that Todd gives him. Never does anything that would spook game, except he will dive between you and a charging bear putting himself in harms way just to protect his human friends! He'll give his all and never look back!I'll share a camp with him anytime if he'll have me. Ben
Ben ol' friend,
I'm pretty sure you rank "up there" in Gauge's book... You are certainly most welcome anytime bud...
Todd
PMed Todd but remembered seeing a post with Gauge in it. After a few years without a lab I found a good lookin pup named Mack that I think is gonna be a hard charger. Would like to keep after birds as his main priority but would also learn him to blood. He is already healing well and retrieving hard. Will see how he does stalking with me around the woods close to home this next week. Though all I may shoot is a stump!!
