Title: Switching from Recurve to Longbow
Post by: String Tracker on April 15, 2007, 06:48:00 PM
I just recently switched to longbow from shooting recurves for 3.5 years.  now mind you when I shot I was straight up "olympic" style. now Im canting the bow and my stance has changed from trailing foot steped back to trailing foot steped forward.  Im having major issues with yardage in switching.

Is this "normal"?  feels like i just started shooting all over again.

Not sure I recently switched but had no problems. Someone with more LB experience will weigh in soon.

Not forward as in becoming your lead foot right? Just more forward?

I just switched to longbow from a recurve and aside from the draw characteristics, it shoots better for me.

I'd say step up close for a while and move back as your brain processes the new data. You may have to learn your yardages again if that makes sense.

Just shoot it like you do your recurve.

After you get the basics down with how the long bow likes to be shot, then have fun and try diff. things. Good luck and have fun. Alan

I just feel that when i stand the way i do when i shoot recurve that im off balance.

recurve i have open stance but trailing foot is maybe 6-8 inches back from the line my shoulders make.  longbow im about 6 inches foreward.

I shoot both and stand the same with either one. Not to be picking apart your form, but in your picture you seem to be leaning back and your elbow looks pretty high to me. I don't know how that would affect your distance estimation though.

I have recurves and a longbow. I have them tuned to hit in the same spot. The only difference is the longbow has a flatter trajectory, so beyond 20 yards, I begin to notice a difference. The difference is negligible inside of 20 yards. Is your longbow much higher or  lower in draw weight than your recurve?

that pic actually was taken by my wife while laying on the ground under me while i shot.

only 2# differance heavier on the longbow.  think it might be the sight window.  Im use to gauging the distance by the vertical of the window on the recurve.

maybe the whole thing is mental game.
