Title: Cresting help...
Post by: Iron on January 10, 2010, 08:37:00 PM
Hi, i tried to crest my arrows i used a white spray can instead of a dip... my problem is when i tried to apply the cresting the paint wouldnt go smooth. I tried to thin it a bit that just made the white come off. i dried the white for 30 hrs or so i figured it would be good. i also got streaks in my colors...  im using the bohning cresting paints and brushes. is this just a matter of finding the right consistancy in my paints?

what kinds of brushes should i be using? are there better paints?  has anyone used these paint markers instead of the paint and brush?

any help would be great..

thanks, Jason

My guess is the paints are not compatable, I used Valspar spray enamal(Lowes) with Testors model paint to crest with and a coat of minwax polycrylic to protect the cresting

The bohning paints contain methyl ethyl keytone and will disolve almost every other paint/finish except another lacquer. Rick.

For dipping and cresting as well, need to thin the Bohning lacquers -- one part thinner to two parts lacquer works well for me.

I'm in the same boat, I don't have a dipper either and have stained and applied two coats of spar varnish and now want dress them up and I don't know where or how to proceed. I was thinking of spray paint too. As for markers this is the ones I read you want- Opaque Paint Markers made by Deco Color-.  I guess I will be going to lowes for Valspar spray enamel. Steve

If you want to stay with a spray cap then switch your cresting paint to testors acrylics or any other acrylic for cresting. It is water based and you thin with water.

How do the acrylic paints hold up, once you start sticking targets?

Just asking.

the spray paint is just oil based the BOHNING IS LACQUER!! they are not compatible
what i use is rustoleum spray paint for my dip cap and for my crest i use testors modle paint!
for my clear coat i use minwax polycrylic (waterbased) and Duco for my fletchings

Same problem finding the paint. Found all the Testor paints at Hobby Lobby.
