I just received a Shrew Classic Hunter from a fine fellow Tradganger yesterday. This bow is a complete blast to shoot! I've spent the last 2 afternoons, in freezing temps and blowing wind, shooting it nonstop.
It is definitely a different beast from the full size, heavy riser, takedown recurves that I'm used to shooting.....but man what fun!! I was pleasantly surprised with the performance as well.
Here are a few pics, for the truly addicted!! LOL

beautiful bow allen!those limbs are killer.i've been doing the same thing with a vortex i picked up a few weeks ago.
gorgeous bow ive been keeping an eye on the classifieds and kicking around the idea of ordering one. Have an itch for a short one piece bow that needs to be scratched....best of luck with a beautiful bow (even if the riser is on the wrong side  )
Purdy :saywhat:
Nice bow!
Beautiful bow Allen, and it looks kinda like it may suit you too.
Man! That's one good lookin bow!
Allen, they are a blast to play with, but I bet you would'nt have pulled that one arrow high out of the dot with you go to bow. LOL. have fun. by the way , that is a very nice looking quiver. don
Thanks guys, it soesn't hurt that it has some awesome limb veneers!
Don, that was the first arrow that I shot from it that ended up outside the dot. I'm sure it won't happen again!! :archer:
They are great bows. I love hunting with mine.
Sorry about the mismash of arrows in the quiver. I was a little impatient to get out and shoot it, I just grabbed some arrows out of the bucket to fill my quiver!!
Allen congrats,it is avery nice bow and I like the limbs.Well you are a lefty too so on my next strings order send it to me I'll give it a test drive for Boar capability.LOL.Felix
Felix, I think it would do a great job on a boar! I made up one of my strings for it last night. It's really shooting well now!
its a beauty
They are fun to shoot and a BIG change fron the larger heave recurves.
Nice bow and pretty arrows.
Tim
DEATHMASTER
I've got the same sickness Allen, ain't it great!
Sickness??
You are only in the early symptom stage! :D
I'm sure amar911 will be chiming in soon.
HE has THE Shrew sickness along with the most unbelievable collection of Shrews.
I'm wondering if the name Allan/Allen has anything to do with it. If so, you are sunk!
Welcome to the ward.
One of the biggest mistakes I made was selling mine.
I even contacted the buyer a year later to see if he would sell it back to me, he just laughed...oh well.
Good looking bow. Nice group as well.
nice bow and gooder shooter by the looks of it
Sweet looking bow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What are those veneers?
Allen,
Nice looking bow! How do you like the grip compared to your widows and acs? I had a shrew a couple years ago, but 1. it was a little to heavy draw weight for me and B. I struggled with the grip some.
What's that big target you are shooting those arrows into? That look really nice!
Chris
I do believe you owe me dinner Mr. Shafer! :goldtooth:
Another beauty and a straight shooting lefty! Congratulations on adding another keeper to your stable Allen.
Sharp looking bow, what's the veneers
Bob (Lost Arra) knows me too well. I have been trying to resist saying anything, because I am suffering from a few viruses right now, with the Shrew virus making my wallet the sickest. That is a beautiful bow that you got Allen, and looks like it may be the one that Ron LaClair used to own and hunt with that made a trip out to Colorado to a couple of other TradGang members who owned it before Allen bought it. You know any Shrew that Ron chooses to own and hunt with is going to be a nice one! I would have bought that bow a couple of times when it was for sale before if it were not wrong-handed!
Although all the Shrews will continue to be wonderful bows, they do keep getting better, and the latest model that I just had made for me and received 10 days ago is easily the best ever. I would hate to try to say which bow out of all the really great ones out there is the best all around bow, because each one of them is a tradeoff. All I can say is that Ron and Gregg have succeeded in making all the right tradeoffs to make the Shrews the "best of breed" in a short, light, smooth, fast, great feeling bow. That is not what every bowyer is trying to build, and it is nice to have the variety of types we do. There are many other bows I own and love too, but I am definitely a devotee of the Shrew line. Congratulations on your new to you Shrew Classic Hunter, Allen.
Bob, if you have liked my other Shrews, you have got to shoot my latest two. They are both fantastic, but the last one I got will blow you away. It is the holy grail of short, light, quick handling bows. Give me a call when it warms up a tad and I will come over and shoot with you.
Allan
What are the specs on it? Length and poundage.
Here we go again--Smokin'A.S.
Sweet looking bow.Are those limbs Camphorburl or Curlybirch.
Yep the limbs are Curly Birch, riser is phenolic.
Specs are 56" 51@28", I was told that this bow started out as one of Ron's personal bows.
Chris, so far the grip fits me pretty well (it's been cold and windy so it's kind of hard to tell how well I'm shooting it). My target is a Block, it's 4' X 4' and WELL broken in (if you can't tell) LOL
Tim, will a hot dog do? Now I'm out of money again!! :biglaugh:

I should have given Mr. Tim a big "thank you".
He took time out of his Christmas day to answer some questions about Shrew bows for me, and blatently nudge me into buying it!
Thanks again Bud!!
Wait...you needed nudging to buy a bow? That's rich :saywhat:
You bringin' that pretty thang to Dixie next week?
Beautiful bow (and a lefty at that!!). I have a 60" Shrew and love shooting it. I would love to try one of the shorter ones!!
That bow used to be mine. It's made a couple trips to ShrewHaven and has made meat a time or two. I don't recall who talked me into selling it to him but he was a pretty slick talker, probably a used car salesman.. :D
Allan, it looks like you need to slide your quiver up farther on the riser, both top and bottom. The limbs bend into the riser and if you don't get the quiver up past the fadeouts as far as possible it restricts the limbs. Take care of my bow, she's a sweetheart... :archer:

Hello, Ron...may have made the same mistake on mine. Can you post a pic of a correctly mounted quiver? Might be a help to us all. Thanks. :archer:
This is the only picture that I've got with a quiver mounted on the short riser of a Classic Hunter. I hope this helps.
Thanks, Ron...just to be clear, you want the quiver mounts as close to the center (opposite direction of the tips) of the grip as possible?
I've been infected and symptoms are getting worse as my next due date approaches.
this thread is awesome just bought a new to me last night on the classifieds cant wait to shoot it. beautiful bow A.S. even cooler that it was Rons at one point!
Ron, thanks for the help with the quiver. It's a sweetheat, I'll treat her good!
Doc, I've been trying to talk some of the other Cool Springers in to shooting next weekend. I may have to go whether they do or not!!
Good looking bow....shelf on the wrong side tho....lol
found another picture.

This Classic Hunter was made in 2008 and did start life as one of Ron's personal bows that he shot last year. Then Ron started shooting the new Shrew Model-T in 3D and other tournaments and loved it, so he decided to keep shooting the Model-T throughout the hunting season. Rather than stick the Classic Hunter on a rack, Ron put it up for sale. A TradGanger in Denver, CO, bought it and then sold it to a TradGanger in Loveland, CO. It isn't that the Colorado TradGangers didn't like the bow; they did like it. I know that the problem the last owner had was he had a 31" draw length and the bow ended up 10 pounds heavier than he felt comfortable shooting. Too bad for him, but good for Allen. The bow has an interesting history and was carried for a season by the man who designed the Shrews, so it will be a great bow to own. It has the provenance, the performance and the beauty. Enjoy it Allen.
Allan
Am I correct about everything, Ron? I'm trying to keep up with that bow. It is one that made me wish I was ambidextrous. :archer:
Allan
Thanks for the info on the quiver mount. I had my quiver mounts to close together. That must have been the reason I missed a couple of deer last fall!!! HaHaHa :knothead: :archer:
Allan/amar911, when are we going to see pics of your new shrew? Thanks for the info the other day.
Mark
Amar911/Allan (you spell your name wrong by the way! LOL)
That history of this bow sounds right in line with what I was told. I think she has found a new home. I look forward to taking it to the woods next fall.
Allen
I am thinking about one for myself, damn good looking bows.
I'm waiting on one that has been mailed by Ron early in December but someone from the postal service screw up and sent the bow to China rather than to France ... I'm shrew sick
Allen - My name is spelled right-handed and yours is spelled left-handed, hence the difference.
Mark - I will take some pictures of my new CH this weekend and post them here.
Cacciatore - Stop thinking and place your order. You will have a long wait anyway, so you might at least get in line, and Ron does not even require a deposit.
Phil - Sorry to hear about the mail problem. It will be worth the wait, assuming it gets to you.
Allan
Hey Allen, nice lookin' bow. My daughter (Emma) is on my lap keeping me company and she says your feathers are pretty. Have fun shooting that "new" bow.
-Jeremy
Nice group , do all shrews do that or was that your tipical? :D
Allan, you must be smarter than me. I never realized there was a right hand and left hand spelling for our names!! LOL
Felix, you may as well order one. The only reason I never ordered one before is that I'm terrible at long wait times. This one is the exact specs that I would have ordered though.
Fixer, that was one of my first groups out of it. Here's a 30 yard group from one of my other bows. I'm getting close to this with the Shrew now that I've shot it for a couple days.... :goldtooth:
Nice lookin Rig Allen!!!!
Thanks John, I've had that quiver strapped on about 1/2 dozen bows now....it works great on all of them!!
You need a kanati for the schafer. limb bolt angle brackets at least. Good shooting Don
I hear ya Don....I thought I had to have a fancy laser engraved hood for it though. I'm always game for an "upgrade" though!
There's no telling how many good bows Ron has passed along but there's a Crown Jewel at my house with his name on it. I looked at that Shrew pretty hard and if she had been 10# heavier I would'a bit. You should really enjoy it.
A.S. I have only seen pictures of the shrew, how do like the fit of the handle with the thumb ridge and the size for your size hand?
Fixer, I'm a long time recurve shooter....so I don't have a lot of experience with this type of but, but the grip feels real nice. The thumb ridge really helps locate your grip.
A.S. I shoot recurve and lomg bow just looking at the shrew it appears it would feel like a low recurve. I'v missed a couple of shrews on the classified but maybe the time will come. :wavey:
fixer keep at it theyre around...i was too slow on the first four or five that i saw in the classifides, hoping to get my new to me shrew this week that i finally jumped on.
A.S. Is the grip more like a locator grip on the great northerns or is it more a straight grip like a longbow (cant wait to understand the sickness!)
It's more of a locator grip, probably dished more than most that I familiar with. Like Fixer said, it's probably closer to a low wrist recurve grip.
Thanks sounds great ill have to post my sickness when she arrives
Pcappy, Did you get the Samurai that I missed.
fixer....i was also too slow on the samuri, i had actually given up on finding one in the classifides last night and decided i was going to order one from Ron. I logged back on to get the link to his page checked the classifides one more time and ended up with a 54" classic hunter with caron foam limbs with curly birch if i remember right 58# @ 28" it was the exact bow i was going to order. Got really lucky keep at it there out there
Great looking bow!!!
Allen would you please add me to your will so your wife won't have to sell all your nice stuff. I'm sure I can learn to shoot left handed. Happy New Year to you ... nice looking bow and as usual " nice shoot'n
I got it bad............. :knothead:
Ken, I'll put you on the "list". Shootin' lefty ain't that hard!!
I promised people I would post pictures of my new Shrew Classic Hunter this weekend. The pictures are now posted on the Solana Ranch hunt thread if you want to see them. I don't want to post them twice and use up unnecessary space on the site.
Allan
Alan, awesome looking bow, especially the limbs!! I would be glad to keep the dust off of some of the other bows in your stable!
Brian, I don't let them sit still long enough to colloct dust! I may have to thin out the bow rack soon, as I have another bow on order!!
Just got my first shrew at Chritmas time.A classic hunter carbon foam core with tamo ash.I am still working up some arrows. The bow is 60#@30" any advise on arrows.Got some Beaman classics in 400 full length but I think they are weak.
Thanks Harry

So to bring back an old but good thread, I bought this bow from Allen last year to see if I liked the Shrew bows even though it was on the light side compared to what I usually shot.
A couple of weeks later I was on the build list for a takedown and should be coming up soon. I figured I would sell this bow once the takedown came in but there is just something about this bow and it will be staying here, you keep the ones that speak to you.
It caused me to sell off my longer longbows and took two nice bucks here this season. Being one of Ron's former personal bows strangely enough she hangs next to a Black Widow Crown Jewel that has Ron's name on it. Funny how things work out, kharma I guess.
David, I think about that bow often. It was one of the most fun-to-shoot bows that I have ever owned. If you ever decide to sell it, please keep me in mind. I kick myself ofter for letting it go! :banghead:
Allen
Good looking bow. I see your still rockin' the hot pink fletching. Hope to get up to Dixie and see the Cool Springers again this year.
I've got a Super Shrew 1 of 100 Limited Edition that I'm thinking about parting with. This one is #13 of 100 and comes with the knife with #13 and my name etched on the blade. The bow is 60" 53# @ 28". For those that don't remember the Limited Edition Shrews is has an arrow inlaid into each limb and stag on tips and riser.
Oh, and it's left hand
I've never seen one Ron, can you post up a pic of it? After that I'm sure somebody will give it a new home.

She's a sweetie for sure. I was sold when I took my first buck with it. The deer was really big bodied, and I remember right before I dropped the string in the back of my mind I was hearing 51#,only 51# (being used to 60#) as the arrow slipped though and the buck jumped but only ran a few steps. I sat there watching him as he looked around and reached to take a bite off a bush and started to stagger before going down while I thought yeah...51#.
The reason I am wanting another is that the takedown would travel so well, plus I am traying to talk myself into a 54".
I still like my recurves (even though they don't get shot as much) but really for a hunting bow the SCH pretty much has it all.
Wish I was left handed shooter. I would be all over Ron's bow like white on rice. Uh oh I may be getting infected with that mysterious shrew virus for which there is only one treatment.
Allen looks like you got a winner. Always love reading the shrew threads. If you shrew owners start a club, I vote Allan as historian (not that Ron needs any one to help).
The virus is spreading in me, so the CH is available in 56", site says 52 and 54. Drawing 29.5 I think I'd like the longer length. Any thoughts from you longer draw guys?
katman,
A 56" would be perfect for you.
Java Man
I have the 56" and love it, but everybody says the 54 is good for longer draws and a takedown 54" would really pack and travel well.
Dave,
I thought the same thing about the 54" vs the 56". So I picked up one of each.
For a 29" draw the 56 is the way to go. You gain a lot of stability over the 54" offering.
Thanks Java Man, now I just need to shoot one before I commit to a take down, some common sense kicking in. Very few trad shooters here. Wonder if there is a loaner program for those not making it to a big shoot?
Dang, Them Shrew bows are all over the place. I love all of mine too! This is my travel bow bolt CH...Doc

stunning.
Beautiful bow. I've never had the chance to shoot one...but hope to some day.
What a gorgeous bow! I really like the look of the quiver as well. Is that a quiver that Ron sells? I'm a lefty that shoots a righty bow with my left hand. I need a quiver that is tall enough to slide my right hand under.

Larry
My buddy down south talked me out of my shrew as it was to heavy for me ,but man did it shoot nice!I miss her already.I can forsee one in my near future.

Have you ever considered switching to a LH bow? Shooting a RH bow left handed makes it hard it keep the arrow on the shelf unless you might be rotating your wrist so that the back of your hand is against your face.. ..at any rate it's not the best method for good shooting.
Yeah man Ive sure been afflicted. Nope, I'm not rotating my wrist and yes, I've tried switching to LH. Doesn't work, can't keep the arrow on the shelf no matter what I try.
I was probably 11 when my dad drug home a green fiberglass 45 lb. stick bow. He didn't know how to shoot it, but he knew I'd been wanting one. Now, this is in the 70's, with no internet and nobody around to show me how to use a bow. So, I fooled around with it for a few weeks and figured out a way to shoot that worked well for me.
And I am accurate with the way I shoot. I'm left handed, left eye dominant and it never made sense to put the arrow on the right side of the bow. On the left side of the bow the hand/eye/shelf are all on the same side.
It's fun to walk into a sporting goods store and ask to shoot a bow. The look on their face when I shoot a righty left handed, and right on into the target is like:
Thanks for posting the pics on the quiver Ron. That one looks like it could just work! I'm guessing it's one of the ones over on your site?

Wow...can you identify the woods in that riser? Beautiful!
Phenolic and cocobolo, with accents of koa, anigre, and clear glass.
Thanks, Gregg...pm sent. :saywhat:
I swear the wood in that bow is still alive!
Allan, you have more than exceeded King Shrew Pig status :notworthy: ;)
Gotta love shooting the Shrew bows. I love my sixty inch Super Shrew. You just can't beat the quietness and pointability of a Shrew. (and Mr. Coffey builds a pretty fine looking bow to add the icing to the cake).
Its alive,Its alive,,,shrew haven created a monster,,and Izzy has it...beautiful.and deadly when used properly, that 5.0.

Have to try one. :archer2:
Patrick -- Are you saying you bought that bow from Izzy? Can't believe he would let it go.
Ray -- I still have that Shrew Lite I bought from you -- or at least my wife has it. Great little bow for a woman or a youngster. I am trying to decide what I want for my next Shrew since my time is here. I ordered two in the fall of 2009 and got the first of those two a few weeks ago. It is the best ever, a 56" 52#@29.5" Koa Classic Hunter. It is amazingly beautiful in an understated way. The next one will be 14 Shrews, if I am counting correctly, but that is because one of them went back home to our fellow TradGang member, David Janssen. I will be hunting in Australia a month from now with TradGanger Andy Ivy as my professional hunter in search of Asiatic buffalo using my 60" 68#@29.5" Super Shrew Samurai. I know the bow can do its job. The question is whether I can.
Allan
I have the sickness as well !!! Just not nearly as bad as Allan though. :biglaugh: I recieved my first Shrew 2 months ago.
Bill
PDK25, you are going to love it!
I sure wish this one was still mine! :banghead:
Allan, Im not selling mine. I believe Allen Shafer is. How bout putting up a pic of your koa bow?
I'm with Izzy. Would really like to see a picture of Allan's Koa Shrew.
Bill
I have the sickness also...I'm thinking about taking one maybe two more jobs (on top of my full time job) just so I can own a Shrew one day. I've never shot one but I've never heard anything bad about them. If I could own a Shrew 2 more jobs would be totally worth it!
I love my Super Shrews here are a few pics:

Warden609 very nice bucks and the pictures are very good quality. Did you shoot those in kentucky? If so kentucky must be a sleeper state or should I say was. Congrats on the nice bucks
Izzy -- Glad to hear it was not your bow being sold. That bow is outstanding in every way.
Guys, I am on business in NYC for the rest of the week and will be hanging out at Ground Zero tomorrow with the President (actually I will be somewhere in the vicinity of where he will be), but I will post pictures of the Koa CH when I get home Monday.
Allan
Allan, when I get the shrew we'll have to get together for some shooting. Man, I ran away from the northeast to get to Oklahoma. I'm staying away from NYC unless it is a life or death emergency.
I got a Super Shrew a few weeks ago in a trade with a fellow Tradgang member and I think I may have the sickness too. Looking for another one now....... Super Bows!!!
Randy
Allan, I'm glad somebody is getting some use out of that Shrew Lite.
It looks like Warden609 got the big buck attactant package and accuracy package option with his Shrews. Ron never offered me the big buck attractant package on my Shrews, but perhaps that's because we're in camp together and he doesn't want my bow drawing all the big bucks from his stand. Hmmmmmm.......
I'm waiting on my first trad. bow, from Maddog Archery, when I get up to speed, I'm gonna be on the Shrew Order List! :bigsmyl:

Ray, the turkey package is really expensive.

Nice Tom, Richard!
Is that a 52 inch CH in the photo?
Enjoy the feast!
Shoot straight, Shinken
Warden609,
That's a dandy bird and nice picture. I know how expensive that turkey package is!! My avitar has my first turkey with a bow from back in 2000 that I got with my Super Shrew Samurai. It was my first Super Shrew and after bagging countless deer at Shrewhaven, that turkey and a P.Y. class bear, it's been semi-retired (well, a 60 inch Super Shrew with special wood riser combinations and bamboo core/stained curly birch limbs really has shoved it aside-truth be told the Samurai is about 62#'s at my draw and my 60" Super Shrew is about 50#'s).

It is a 58" Super Shrew with stained curly birch. I have never shot the classic hunter, but I hear they are great bows. Thanks
Ray, I look forward every year to hearing the stories from Shrew Haven. You being co-chef I bet you see alot of new Shrews. Is the Super Shrew model your favorite?
Richard,
I personally like the 60" Super Shrew (I draw 30"). My Super Shrew Samurai is 58" and it's just been an outstanding bow. I like the 56" Classic Hunter and the 58" Scout recurve too. My personal preference is as follows:
60" Super Shrew
58" Scout recurve
56" Classic Hunter
58" Samurai
Next I'd probably put a 56" Little Favorite Recurve. I've not shot one, but now that they're available, I think that would be dandy little bow.
One of the favorite parts of Shrew Haven lodge is getting to try prototypes and to also shoot everyone elses bows. The other fun thing is sampling great bourbons and appetizers each night after the hunt. Darn, camp is just too many months away right now.
The good times don't last long enough. Hope you guys have a great hunting season.
Pdk25 (Pat) is getting his Shrew from me, I got it from Allen. Pat wouldn't be getting it if I didn't have a new one going on the line in the next week or so. He'll find it to be a pretty sweet bow.
I'm on the list for one like originally pictured and I am VERY anxious. Normally I'm not a big fan of "short" longbows but these are really something. I just hope mine comes in time for the Fall hunt!
I have to say i like your bow, but i like this line even better.
QuoteMy biggest fear is that when I die, my wife will sell all my stuff for what I told her I paid for it!!
I laughed out loud when I read it. Do you mind if I plagiarize it?
very cool!
