No scientific tests done but when it seems like my wood arrows are quieter at the shot than my carbons of similar weight. Anyone else notice this. My whip Classic with these woodies is dead quiet.
Bob
Yes I have I think its because they flex more and I think you can check out wood, carbon, aluminum archers paradox on youtube.
Every bow I own shoots quieter with wood arrows, and that's about all I shoot today.
yes they do make a bow quieter more flex and heavy shafts will do it. but after saying that i shoot alum and they are quiet as well
If the aluminums or carbons weigh the same as the woodies, are perfectly in tune with the bow, and the screw in points are tight(wouldn't that be something-LOL!)they can be as quiet as woodies.
I find most non wood shooters are less concerned about noise than are their woodie shooting counterparts. :bigsmyl: :archer:
From my limited experience I have found woodies to be quieter on bows with leather rests and strike plates but if the rest or strike plate has a little more cusion then aluminums and carbons are just as quiet.

X2 what bjorn said.....
Good posts everyone. Good points Bjorn.
We did a test one year while out hunting. Three of us shooting 3 different bows with 3 different arrows. Shot those three arrows out of oneanothers bows into a dirt mound while the other two hid behind said mound (scientifically listening for what an animal would hear : ) . We found that the aluminums had a ring out of each bow. Carbons had a "buzzy thump" (is that a description?)and the woods had a thump. Over all we voted unamimously that the woods were quieter to our ears. It may have been that the woods were no less quiet, but the frequency / pitch was more acceptable.
I would like to see a scientific test to verify our findings.
What do you mean with quiet? Quiet in the hand or quiet to the ear?
I shoot POC's and carbons. With POC the bow is more quiet in the hand, as to the ear I notice no difference.
I suppose it has to do with difference in weight, my woodies weigh more then my carbons.
Hollow tubing will magnify any noise, so that is your answer, at least for the most part.
Not a scientific response but I think woodies are quiter cause they're not hollow thus they have more material to absorb vibration
Good Point on the hollow tubing never thought of that maybe thats it. Quiet meaning to the ear Flying Ducthman for me.
Thanks for the responses.
Bob
Wood arrows are definitely quieter than aluminum in flight. Haven't had experience with carbon.
Yes, but not enough to make any difference.

That's what I was thinking.Woodies are solid...the others are hollow.I've noticed wood is a touch quiter from my Schafer than the others.
woodies are quieter in my selfbows and seem to be more forgiving on spine
Vince at Mohawk Bows told me the same thing a while back. Wood arrows are solid; carbon and aluminum are hollow. It makes sense to me. I find that woodies are quieter.
to say that woodies are quieter than carbons is like saying chevys are faster than fords. neither have the most important data - the comparison specifics.
though i love the nostalgia of a poc shaft, if woodies were proved to be twice as quiet as carbons, i'd still predominantly use carbons for hunting.
Oh Rob, you are just a techno-twanger from way back. :biglaugh:

A question from dummy.... has anyone ever injected liguid foam from a can into a shaft and allowed it to dry? would that quiet them down? change the spine? increase the shaft weight?
Might be an area to explore???
Gene
Interesting idea Gene.
the only thing i wanna shove inside my carbonies is a 4.5" internal weight footing sleeve.
one thing for sure - efoc carbons are REAL quiet, at least for me.
so the guitar players are now arguing about the noise from their bows .....
wait til they bring out the carbon reflex deflex telecaster ...then we'll see some real arguments!!!
but in answer to the original post .. i find my woodies quieter than carbons , but not by anything overtly noticeable ....
ben
What George said. All my bows are quieter shooting woods over the hoolow ones.
Don't own, nor have I ever played a Guitar.... just asked a question
Gene :notworthy:
wood is much Quieter, I shoot wood with wood and I get the comments!
My bows are quieter w/ wood arrows, especially at 10+ grains per pound. Plus they are a lot more fun to build. As George said, a hollow tube will resonate.
Some these skinny, weight forward carbons may be a little noisier but they sure shoot nice.
Any other opinions out there?
In my experience wood arrows seem quieter, might be better tuned to the bow, point/broadhead may be on the shaft tighter, or maybe just heavier. Could also be a little aural illusion because I like to shoot wood over the man made stuff.
