Title: Snuffer/adapter question with a season ending twist...
Post by: BowHuntingFool on January 03, 2010, 10:54:00 PM
Well it was almost a dream end of the season, well is was. With time winding down I look at my phone and see there is 7 minutes left, put my phone back in my pocket and hear some noise, I know its a deer coming over the ridge, it comes right into my range, stops broadside. I'm thinking this is AWESOME, a small buck to close the season with minutes left. I get repositioned and loose my arrow, crack... thwappp... the arrow hits a twig and deflects high and sticks right into a tree! Bummer, all in all it was awesome way to end the season! It all happened so quick I didn't even know what was going on, kinda counted my chickens way to early...LOL!

Anyway... I go fetch my arrow and the arrow is laying on the ground with the broadhead stuck in a tree, the head and adapter came loose?? The Snuffer is all bent out of shape but was wondering why they came loose? Cheap glue or.....

There are several reasons;

>> Sometimes the glue gets brittle after age...
>> Cold temperature make the glue brittle...
>> Could have been a bad bond between the inner shaft and adapter.

Several years ago I had a lot of issues with points coming loose in the winter.  I now use a more flexible hot melt glue and degrease all bonding surfaces with denatured alcohol.

Good luck, Jack

Thanks Jack, this was a factory head and the temp was around 7 degrees at the point of impact when the head hit the tree! LOL!    :bigsmyl:

It could be all that Jack said and based upon your post, the glue could have failed due to the lack of integrity of the ferrule after the impact.

20 yrs. of stumping has taught me the best glue in very cold temps is Franklin Tite-bond sub floor adhesive that carpenters use. In the caulk tube. It stays pliable. All other hot melts and epoxy get too brittle. Searching for judos in the snow is not my idea of fun. Good Luck, Tom

In addition, when mounting the head it should be cleaned with asetone.  There's always some oil left.  You'll see it on a Q-tip soaked with asetone.

Yeah, the one that came apart was from the factory, a screw in 150gr! Also bent it up pretty good!

Bittersweet!  I'd start practicing in the 7 degree temps Joe   :saywhat:

My season ended a while ago for deer shotless I might add.

The ferrel cement for fishing rod tips is what I use it seems IMO to be a little more flexible and not brittle in the cold temps.

No surprise there.I've had Magnus factory mounted heads before and I think they oil coat the inside before they glue them.I've had a bunch of them come off.

I'm hoping it was a fluke, I love shooting the Snuffers! My Big River Longbow sunk it in a tree pretty solid!
