I don't have a pic of an elk becaus I've never shot one..... but I do have a dream of shooting one with my longbow one of these days. I have been to CO twice and not taken a shot. Maybe the third time will be a charm?

Here's my 2009 Arizona bull. My first elk.
Steve where were did you get that bull in wyoming?
In the Bighorns. My best hunting buddy lives in Sheridan.
Outstanding!
You elk whackers should post up your gear choices over on the thread asking what draw weight/arrow weight is adequate for a broadside elk at 25 yards...
I want to go elk hunting with Randy!!!
Congrats on gettin it done a number of times!!
How old were you when you killed your first one?

Those are some awesome pic's....like everyone else my dream animal....Randy...I just need those gps coordinates...you can pm me...LOL
Yea O@U it was a weard evening hunt I shot a 3 coyotes fairly early all 60 yds plusover a water hole.(coyotes 3 me 0)About 5 a 280ish 5 by 6 came in wich I promptly shot over his back at 20yds.To this day I can't explain that shot. When that spike came in it was getting dusky at the shot but it felt good and I watched him lay down 40 behind the stand, backed out and came back in the morning. If Y'all were counting thas 5 missing arrows from 6 previouslly full slots.Needless to say when I returned I had a full quiver.Found the bull were I left him and never took another shot.
I'll play. Got the elkaddicition bad. Start shaking just looking at some of the pics on here!! Now I just want to shoot a bull like one of Ferrets!

I was lucky enough to be able to hunt WY in 2000 and take a 320 class bull. Can't wait to get back out there again, I've got 2 elk points, 8 moose points, and 8 sheep points. Probably looking at 2011 for a combo of elk and moose. Nice pics every one !! Joe
Very nice Whip....where did you get your elk?
Whip steve o and jeff thats awesome.
Those are great bulls.
Terry, They were in New Mexico. I have hunted elk in Colorado as well, but I always seemed to mess up there. Plenty of chances - even more excuses.
Looking to use my preference points in Wyoming this year and find the bull of my dreams!
I am so jealous of you guys!!! I have one cow elk to my credit with 2 misses on bulls in 6 years of OTC Colorado tags. How do you miss something the size of a voltswagen my wife asked last year? Next year I have enough points for unit 7 in WY hopefully will change my luck. Great pics guys!
Grand animals! Well-done, all!

That sounds like one exciting water hole with lots of action!! 3 shots on coyotes no matter hit or miss is awesome!!!! Well done with the recovery!! Any elk with a trad bow is quite the accomplishment!! Now an elk with an invisible arrow...that is another story all together!! :bigsmyl: JK..
Great Pics everyone!!! September cannot come quick enough!!
Thanks guys for sharin' photos of some really nice bulls!
Definitely, one of my favorite threads thus far in 2010!
Shoot straight, Shinken
i am trying to find the pics of my biggest bull with a trad bow.biggest ever actually...347 dry...5yd shot.perfect six...had only one inch deduction..gave the rack away..cant eat the horns, woulda shot a spike just as dead.i absolutely would rather be dead than not be able to call in elk and teach others what i have learned calling elk.this is the sport that feeds my need.
This years OTC Colorado bull, should get my draw tag for next fall and will try for something a little bigger. (a few pics)

Nice elk everyone. How about some bow stats, draw weight and length, bow you used and arrow weight.
Dave
Mark that is awesome.
I wouldnt care bull or cow...elk are awesome animals...one of these days!
Idaho 2005

Robertson Stykbow 65#@28". 150 gr. RazorCap with 625 gr. arrow.
Joe
sweet bull njstykbow...what did he score....great brows...them brows look 20-21 inches...whys that bull hidin his face? he camera shy or sumthin? :D
My setup has changed some over the few years that I have been hunting. All of my bows are 57@28.
I have used three different bows to take my elk and four different arrows. This is in lagre part because I did some learning here and through experiance.
I took my cow and my first bull with a Palmer Classic double carbon. I was shooting a 35-55 goldtip weighted up 150 grains and a 125 grain magnus stinger.
I then switched to a 55-75 and no weights. Total arrow weight less than 500. Still using a magnus stinger. This was not a good plan. I spined the rag horn in my picture. I was very disappointed in how that arrow performed.
Then I got a new bow. My Pronghorn Ferret Recurve. I also went back to the drawing board for arrows. I started with a Axis FMJ 340 added a 100 grain insert and a 125 magnus stinger total arrow weight 600 grains. I took my largest bull with a bow to date with this arrow. I will say that it has performed the best. I took a lot of animals with this arrow and never once did it fail me.
Then I got my new Pronghorn Foam Core longbow. I am using a Axis 400 with a 100 grain insert and a magnus stinger(see a trend I really like this head for elk). Total arrow weight 570ish. Clean pass through on my elk this year.
You asked sorry for the long winded version.
lol...nice job on the elk ferret...you elk slayer you...lucky duck living in wyoming.need a roomate or somebody to hunt with? :readit:
Joe that is one heck of a bull.
Elkherder thanks i have been blessed. If i never take another elk i will still have been a very fortunate person.
This year was my 6th time archery elk hunting. The first 5 times was with a wheel bow this year was with a longbow in CO in an OTC area.
Guess I should have switched 6yrs ago :knothead:
Elkherder,
He grossed 365 5/8". The whale tails are 21". Bad pic of his face...he fell into that log and it's hidden in a shadow!
Joe
Here is a 5x5 that I got in 2007 while hunting on my own in a Colorado wilderness area. Taken with a 54 lb Toelke Whip with Carbon Express 150 shafts and Magnus broadhead with the total arrow weight increased up to 640 grains.

Great pics fellas. Any elk with a bow is a great one in my book but there are some exceptional animals in here. You guys rule.
Beautiful critters! Congrats to all! Randy, love the 2009 bull with your new pronghorn longbow. How do you like the foam core limbs?
They are smooth as silk. They have a diferent feel than my bamboo osage. The elk dont seem to care though. :bigsmyl:

I hope I get to get after again next year
Ray I was hoping that you would come around and put some pics here. As I have said before that is a great bull.
Ferret.....thanks for rolling a wine bottle into a jail cell!!!!
I can't take much more of this!!!!!
colorado has all of those otc tags I think that you can do it julian.
Kevin, Clay and John those are awesome.
John you are about to get to do a whole lot more elk hunting really soon. I hope that is all going very smooth for you.
IF I don't draw WY, UT, AZ or NM.....I'm headin to CO this year.
One of these days an elk will be stupid enough to let me shoot it, one of these days, LOL! Keep 'em coming guys, it gives me hope!
Hey, Ferrett
There's a real good story about that bull...last 15 minutes of a 6 day hunt- saw 40+ bulls over 5 points- shot him at around 4-5 yards...I was on the ground, backed into one of those trees, and he walked by me at about 4-5 feet! He looked right at me, but didn't figure me out and just turned to walk away.
These threads always bring back the smells and sights of the high lonely country to me- the wind blowing through the ponderosas, the billions of stars in that impossibly clear sky up on the divide, smell of pine wood fires while people sit around and tell stories and plan the next day's hunt- cold, but snug in your bag at night.
Close encounters with mulies, the occasional crazy antelope, mountain lions, lightning bolts from pop up thunderstorms- I just dream of the day I can return to my favorite place on earth- the Rocky Mountains and my favorite prey- ELK!
Ray I was told that I need to here you tell that story. It must be a little more exiciting than written words can tell. I might have to give you a call some time or just come hunt hogs with you once.
There is a saying about hunting elk. "The work starts after the fall down." Earlier Joe ashton said he got an elk to fall just right for him a mile from the truck and all down hill, I need to learn to ask them to do that before I shoot. That was a nice bull Joe. :bigsmyl:
It sure is nice when you get it all back to camp though. These are from last year.

Randy,
Your success has been great motivation for 2011 when I will have 3 preference points for WY. Thanks for sharing.
Clay
I hope you guys are all proud of yourselves ! I got Drool all over my computer keys LOL,Great Pics .
Hey, great thread guys! I just noticed it, nice to see all the success, great job!
ElkNut1
Elknut you you should have some pics to add dont you. You know clay you can draw in several areas with that many points especially in the sounthern part of the state and the western.
I am looking into some different areas, mainly in the western part. I had just been planning to get a general tag but I guess I should take the time to study the draw odds before using points on a general tag.
There are some really good general areas. I took two really nice bulls a general area.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:notworthy: :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
This *AWESOME* thread belongs back on PAGE 1!
2010 is going to be a fantastic year for hunting!
Shoot straight, Shinken
This year will be my first crack at Elk with a light stick. Because my shoulders from construction and age are hamburg I'm only shooting about 51#s. I'll be using a Terminator head on 500FMJs with inserts tiping the scale at 545grns. I'll be in the San Isabel Nat Forest chasing them for ten days. I'm also picking up a deer and bear tag. I build points betwean Colorado and Montana. Colorado is it this time. Gotta love chasing the mighty wapiti.
Mike good luck to you. get quartering away and stay off that big old leg bone and you will bring home elk.
Awesome stories and awesome pictures. Thanks for the inspirations and drool. Anyone have pictures of elk being packed out on horse or horse/mule packing or horse/mules in camp pictures?
Ferrett that's a TOAD that guy in the ball cap is holding onto!!!!
Ray that is me and the bull that I got last year.
yikes..how did I miss THAT one????!!!!
Here you go Ray. I bet you saw it. I just never posted that picture before.
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=90;t=000283
John that is an awesome picture.
I would have put some pictures on here earlier, but had to sort through a few to get back in time. I didn't start bowhunting elk until the late 70's or so, but had some success. This is a bull from the early 80's I think. Probably a Kodak instamatic and one of my kids took the picture. Bill, that would be a Groves wooden handle takedown. Not to be traded for blonds.
1991. First year with a longbow. Doug fir shafts and a wolverine broadhead. He was trying to circle me after eight hours of combat and the arrow broke his neck just in front of his ribcage. Dropped, but had to shoot him in the lungs to kill him. Felt bad about it. Probably the heaviest elk I've ever shot. He was missing half of his left antler.
1994. Thayne said "DAD, ELK", and I woke up and killed this bull.
Role reversal. I said "Git over there!!!"
Same bow from the '94 year, but my son was using it. He made a good shot.
Some of the elk I have killed never get their picture taken, and their antlers got left for the rodents. I do bring some racks back, if we have horses.
Woodsman after work.

From last fall.

Those sure are some *nice* bulls over the years Mark!
Thank you for sharin' both your success and your son's!
Have a great 2010 huntin' season!
Shoot straight, Shinken
Mark U those are some awsome elk :thumbsup:Had to did around a bit to find this one my first trad elk (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm219/bighorncooch/001-2.jpg)Before I started carrying a camera in my pack
Thanks for sharing Mark, nice to see you passed the tradition to your son.Nice Bulls.
Man o man...that's a bunch of mighty fine pictures. I am chompin at the bits to go this year!
Mark those are awesome. Your son is taking a picture of you in one and you of him in another. It does not get better than that.
Great pic's Mark...
Very cool pictures guys, keepum comin!!!
Mark, very cool pics and post. I have a three year old son and can only hope I have a chance to do that with him. Thanks for sharing.

Norbert is that a Tule elk?
Nope, this was New Mexico. I'm collecting points to hunt Tule here in CA. Should take me another 10 years!
Awesome!!! Someday........
Ya know, the sad thing for me is, I've lived in elk country since 2000. Ten years with Roosies on one side, Rockies on the other, and still eating tag soup!
Those stingers are awesome. That is a nice elk man.
Wannabe1 this will be your year stay confident.
I used a Stinger only once but killed a wild boar,it felt on view 50 yrs, very nice sensation.

are you going to come to elk camp Terry.
Thanks for the heads up Randy.....I'll check it out!...
THANKS!
Wannabe, don't give up. This will be my 20th year chasin elk, still not brought one home, my fault all the way, but I'm hoping for this year. Mabey I will draw :bigsmyl:
If I draw I'll have to do another hunt-a-long, thay are good luck for me. Great pics everyone!
You could always come back and give ol' CO another try!
Absolutely incredible photos, guys. Thanks for sharing.
I'll be making my 1st trip to CO and my 1st elk hunt, in Sept.. As someone else said, earlier......I just wanna walk among them. If I get a shot, that'll be a bonus.
I'll be purchasing an OTC "either-sex" elk tag and a mule deer tag. Any elk that isn't "this year's animal" will risk being shot (at). ANY mulie runs the same risk.
And, NEVER think I'm too proud to have a cow elk mounted......lol.
Please keep the photos coming. I'm a fan.

I wish that I would have done that with mine. If I get another one I think I will have to do that.
it keeps getting closer.
Whos ready
I'm not ready. I hope I DON"T DRAW the limited tag I wanted. I have too many other things going on this year.
Good luck to ya Randy! I hope you kill your big bull right away so you can help me pack out a bison! I hope!
Here is a pic that Tracy(Shedrock)sent me to post of his awesome bull that he got. I am sure that he will give you some more info. What I do know is that he used a Pronghorn :archer2:
Thanks' Randy!
Yes, Pronghorn bow, 58@28, cedar shaft tipped with a Woodsman. 12 yard shot through the heart, 45 yard recovery.

heres a pic of the world record roosevelt archery bull taken by my brother and dale (controversial)in 1985 scored 367 3/8 and.not the record anymore.sadly i had a crack at a bull bigger than this on the oregon coast range in a walk in only area.i was shakin so hard i dropped my arrow on a rock.he was less than twenty yards from me and closing when i dropped the ball.that bull was never killed by a hunter.there are some huge bulls in the oregon rain forest just hard as hell to get close to them from all the brush and holes you gotta climb up and down.
Both killed in over the counter area in CO little guy from last year (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/getphoto-1.jpg)
litttle bigger from 05' (http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu36/L82HUNT/023-3.jpg)
Glenn those are some good ones.
Man, this is getting me charged up. I love me some elk hunting and some high country wilderness.
There are many that will be out next month chasing the wild wapiti
I picked up a left over Region J mulie tag and am waiting on the half-priced cow elk tags to go on sale the 20th for WY. I am chomping at the bit! There are huge bulls there and although I missed my draw this year I am gonna take some awesome pics (I hope) and put a cow in the freezer. I also hope to do a cow elk mount as I have some limited taxidermy skill :)
It's back to New Mexico for me this year. I even got a TradGanger to go with... the old Knappster himself, Woody Blackwell.. Our whole group of 4 drew this year. Applications were way down in NM apparently.
Good luck to all hunting elk this season!
I didn't draw a limited tag, and probably won't buy a general tag this season. I have too much on my plate already this year.
Go get 'em guys!

I feel your pain brother! I've had plenty of chances and blown every one of them. Some guys just have the luck, knowledge or skill to bring home the wily wapiti consistently. Not too many elk in my neck of the woods now though! Keep at it!
Awesome. Finally a thread to show some off all the elk I saw this year in CO. Here are the pics:
Brian,I was on another spot but I am sure to have seen the same elks.!!LOL.
Here is my "little guy" from this past September. Hunted with 7 other TGers and had a wonderful time. This was my 4th elk hunt and first elk.
Anxious for 2011 season.
Thanks Randy, and all others that have posted here. I've learned a lot from this site.

First P&y bull, 1984, Bighorn Custom, called him in with a piece of flex gas pipe, I took off the cook stove every morning

Last day of the season, this little guy busted me at daylight on open tundra, started to run off, I layed down- calf mewed, he turned around walked up at 4 yds

OK... so the year was 1990, not a big bull by any stretch---but, I shot 3 animals in 3 days, first day was the goat, second day was the elk, third day was the mulie, 4th day the wife cut my bowstring and said no more meat packin...Jeez... like Jerry used to say: when you hot you hot!

cmon Big River show us that sapling shot...I so love that picture!!!!!
Thanks for the pics HornHunter, congrats on the 3 for 3. Love all the pics and storys.
Surely there's more elk from this past season... come on guys!!!
Post'em up!!!
Three for three and that includes a mountian goat mighty fine sir.
Great animals all. I hope I'm in good enough shape when I retire to get out for hunt. Until then threads like this keep me dreaming.
Nice pics guys. I hope to get an elk with my widow this year.
Wups!! Knew this thread might be a mistake. I'm planning an elk hunt in either Kentucky or Oregon this year (August or September). Could use some credible help. I'll post my own thread after the Ky drawing.
Utah Colorado Border, open sage, lots of elk tough to hunt
(http://i55.tinypic.com/15zi634.jpg)
way cool!! thanks for the pics.
Hornhunter, you just let me know if you need packin' help so long as you alow me to "dogear" a spot or two for future reference :)
Seriously though, awesome animals you guys. That 3 for 3 is just top shelf though!
Man, you guys are living a dream! If I am ever fortunate enough to go elk huntin' and actually bag a bull elk with my trad bow, I would be ready to die, or at least would be thinking I had already died and gone to heaven! It has been a lifelong dream for me.
"Hornhunter, you just let me know if you need packin' help" been there done that
ITs that TIME again
Thanks for bringing this up again Randy.
It's getting close and I can't wait
Yeah... thanks! Surely there are some more pics to post.
Last year I past on a 5X5 at 15 yards... just not totally clear shot... and called in a monster to within 15 yards of my son (that couldn't get a shot). Called in a total of 6 bulls in 12 days of hunting.
Looking forward to this year as I am doing a pack in 3 week solo hunt.
Good luck all!!!
I think next year is going to be the year for my first elk hunt! Just trying to talk my step father into going with me. :bigsmyl: Awesome elk guys! Thanks for sharing.
My picture has the wrong kind of bow in front of it, maybe in about a month or so, I'll have some pictures to post, probably will be a pic of the one my wife shoots, plan on trying real hard to get her a shot this year!

How the heck did I miss this thread? I just spent 20 minutes browsing it all, Thanks! I could add a pile in here, so here's a few to keep you movin. I didn't start shooting a stickbow till about 9 years ago and a lot of my friends still use wheels. SO, I still have a few I can add.

You've had quite an elk hunting career elk breath! Great photos!
Randy's has likely been more decorated. Having grown up here, these are my whitetail. In fact, I've never taken a whitetail with my bow!
Heres my first without camo. I'm going to try to top this this year, got a trick up my sleeve.
