Title: 2006 MOJAM Hatchet Bow Challenge
Post by: ConnieW on July 03, 2006, 09:35:00 AM
Mike's said that there's been a few threads out there about the Hatchet Bow Challenge - but thought we should get the spirit going again.

MOJAM's coming soon - July 20th so only a couple of weeks left.  Need to get moving guys and gals!!! It's fun - it's challenging - and yes there is pride in creating that bow using only a hatchet - b50 - and beeswax.  A word to the wise for you that create your bow from white wood - the bees wax is a good thing (know that from past experience - lots of humitiy in Marshall).

There also seems to be the ever on-going challenge between the white wood and yellar wood bows - with the yellar wood holding a slim lead (yes that's another challenge).

So lets have some fun and get those hatchet bows built - you can even build them while at MOJAM - the contest is Saturday evening just before the potluck dinner.

I've heard of a couple bows being built - So lets get a sneak peak - take some pics and post them on this thread!!

Good Luck to all!!!!!  :archer:

I may be in the same boat as Calvin this year...  It's suddenly looking like I might not be able to make it this year due to having to work.

And heck, I only live about an hour and a half away...

Dave - You're looking a little feverish. Maybe too much work lately? You better take a day off.

Shaun - Tiller looks nice on that beauty! keep rubbing that wax in.

I'm thinkin Brad Merkle of Little Tree selfbows has a hatchet bow ready. You out there Brad? Do we have to wait for the big show to see it?

Must be some others too.

You know there's more than 15 minutes of fame at stake... the winner "gets to" run the contest next year! Which means you have an iron clad excuse, I mean reason, to attend the 2007 MOJAM.

Hey Brian,

You gonna try to go to mojam???

I talked to my boss the other night and there now appears to be a chance I can get Saturday off.  Of course, that will nock Sundays overtime down from double time to only time and a half....hmmmmmm, is it worth it?????

MOJAM-------------^--------------Double time

I think the scale is gonna tip in favor of MOJAM!

Besides take a hatchet to a piece of wood, and chop away everything that doesn't look like a bow.....

Can anyone provide some more "elaborate" instuctions?????

(hints,pointers,and suggestions,would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!)

I haven't built a bow since I was about 8 years old,and most of those didn't last till dinner time!!!!!

instructions? LOL pretend you're an abo with a hatchet and need to make a bow

seriously  I can tell you how I did mine a few years ago. I used an osage shoot. Chopped it off in the spring and chopped to length plus a little. Set it aside to dry. As it dried it started to split. Stuck my hatchet blade in the split and beat the end of the shoot on the ground until it split all the way. Used my hatchet blade as a scraper and removed the bark. Using a chopping motion starting at the tip and working my way back toward the handle I narrowed the limbs width wise to an even taper.(working in that direction allows you to remove less wood as you go) Then again using a chopping motion starting at the tip I started thinning the limb as I worked toward the handle.Once I got it bending at "ground tiller" ha ha I used the hatchet as a scaraper again to fine tune the tiller. You can chop V nothces for the nocks or pin nocks. You can hang the bow on a limb stub and pull on the string to check tiller or just sit and put your foot on the handle and pull the string to judge tiller.I didn't win (got 3rd) but it was fun and you'll be suprised how nice of a bow you can make with just a hatchet.

How to make a string (but remember you must cut the strands from the spools with your hatchet)

Don't forget that you are also allowed a chunk of beeswax too for the string and to rub on the bow.As I recall they also allow a file to keep your hatchet sharp but you can't use it for the nocks or anything else.
