Has there ever been any experiments or testing done on trad bows due to extreme cold weather? I just got to thinking that even though I've been told that cold weather will not hurt my bow I was very curious if it does or not. Do the
-20 deg. temps harm a laminated bow when drawn? Or does it affect speed? Your thoughts.....
I've done lots of hunting in -20hurt the bow no, but it dose seem it make it a bit faster.
I did a school project a couple years back that required me to chrono my bows when it was minus 35 (F). Out of curiosity, I again chrono'd the same bows that following summer (70F). They were all consistent...about 5 to 7 FPS slower in the cold.
Intoresting Jeff wonder why they seem faster to me??
aquafang. The Byrd expedition to Antarctica, in the 1930's, took some selfbows with them for exercise and just something to do in their spare time. They stored them in temperatures down to sixty below zero farenheit. None failed during the trip and they were used there.
Fred Bear, Ben Pearson and a few others hunted in the arctic at -30 and more with no effect on their bows.
The short answer to your question is no.
My bows seem to tolerate it much better than I do these days. :(
You guys need to move South. :biglaugh:
i lived in alaska for 4 years and we shot in very cold weather all day at shoots we noticed no difference on how bows performed
iv had a shrew longbow that iv had out hunting in Australia at 100+ and the same bow during the winter here at -20 with no ill effects

It would take a nuclear device to get me out of my mountain side home and living in Texas would be about as close to hell as I can imagine.
Glad it works for you but I fry when the temp gets above 65.
George-You forgot the Pythons.

Hold on a min I'll go out side and see. It's -27 right now. NOT
I'm dumb but not stupid!!!
No bugs bothering here in Minn.
No hurricaines either
After a two hour ground blind sit this morning, at 8 degrees; two shots at squirrels...yes, AT...the bow was fine...I wanna know what to wear...George knows the bow, it is 7 lams of wood.
I have travelled to 19 degree MT from 80 degree Florida on several occasions with no ill effects.
