Title: to stiff vs. to weak
Post by: rustyfence on December 29, 2009, 08:15:00 PM
Keep in mind I am a very recent convert from the compound ranks. I read alot about spine issues on the traditional side of things. In the compound world, to stiff is better than to weak. Is the same true in the traditional world? I ask because I have some left over compound arrows I was gonna fletch up with some feathers, but they are gonna be way to stiff. They are 340 ST Epics by Easton. They are cut to 29". I see alot of talk also about bareshaft tuning, and such. I can not shoot my recurve good enough yet to even think about tuning anything!!!!

Weak is better then stiff.  Depending on the weight bow your shoting 340 can be shot.  I use them out off a 60lb bow with 280 grain up front.  This give me EFOC plus a 600 grain arrow.

Unless you have a fairly long draw length, 340s are probably going to be a tad stiff. Since your arrows are cut to 29", I would tend to think they will be too stiff out of a 48#er. Given a choice,I would rather be slightly weak.

I dont think you can get enough weight up front to make those work outta a 48 lb bow

Hey rustyfence, find Stu Millers spine calculator and download it. Anything you need to know about arrow spine will be answered there. I have had some arrows I didn't think I could have used but if you play with point wt. length etc. you may find the right combo to shoot them? But just a guess, they are probably way to stiff!

Ben,
A center shot recurve, or CS hybrid might be your best bet, but they are probably too stiff. Try adding weight up front (100 gr steel adapter and 150+ pt or more). There are topics about FOC you can search. Using a lighter string may help, but check with mfgr recommendations.  Look for topics on Tuning, Spine, or Bare Shaft Testing etc. Check the following that I posted on Shooting Forum:

Refer to the following to determine your correct spine, but be sure to read through to the bottom to understand the basic principal.

If you are not interested in the technical stuff go to their homepage.

If you have TradArchers' World, Fall 2009, check the article on "Tuning the Carbon Arrow" pg 30.

If you have Primitive Archer, Feb/Mar 2009 there is another article "Traditional Bow Tuning, The Bare Shaft Method", pg 17.
