Title: BW sickness!!!
Post by: String Cutter on December 28, 2009, 10:07:00 PM
Is it possible that BW puts MSG's in the finish of their bows?? I've done bought and sold 4 PSA widers over the last 10 yrs.. Cause I can't get them quiet enough for my liking. But man do they ever shoot sweet for me!!!
No sooner had I placed the wider in the mail box and I already started missing her.... Gettin thoughts of ordering another already and it aint been 4 days...  :(

They're nice shooting bows.  I don't currently own a Widow but wouldn't mind getting my hands on a PTFX, tulip or bacote.

Never had a problem getting them quiet enough, at least none of the deer I shoot ever complain. If you get another one try to wooly whisper silencers that Widow sells, work great.  They do shoot great.

Skinny string will work wonders.  I notice a HUGE difference.  I use a 6 strand 450+ on my PSA 3.  Love it.

MRD,
How does that string compare to the D97 in speed, noise, tuning, etc.?

Thanks

There are many ways to quiet your BW,mine are no noiser than the other bows I have, just try to find the time to work on your bow.

Brother, I been working on them and got feed up 4 times cause they are loud. Even had a friend shot it while I was listening from the sides , behind and even down range.. they are just plain loud. I know BW says that they aren't any louder then other bows?? That its just the pitch of the sound??? But I think pitch has alot to do with weather the deer jumps the string... Are you going to jump more at a big bass drum or a car alarm if they were set at the same volume???
I'm havin a love hate relationship here... Think I need a mistress???

Mine made a big difference in noise as I put some deer skin material where the string contact the limbs and after I worked on the brace high.Remember Widows need a stiffer arrow but too stiff makes the bow noiser.

Mine was loud with the original spider silencers. I took velcro and put it on the string grooves and then wrapped the string with wool yarn where they make contact with the string grooves. I then made some silencers out of wool yarn and you have to tinker with the brace height and silencer placement in the string. I also added limb savers.

The most important thing I did that did that killed all the noise was I put bow string wax between the limbs and the riser and on the alighnment pins. Dead quite now, killed 4 deer with it this year.

Try Crown serveing .26 dia, serve the string about 6''.Place  catwiskers about 12'' down from the string loops.
I shoot a Habu Vyperkahn 65lbs(widow copy lol)and have this bow very quiet w/ this formula.

I third the pl statement, I loooooove mine and it's very quiet, have never had any problems, besides my freezer getting too full.

I set my PAII up according to the BW instructions (brace height and spider silencer placement) and couldn't be happier.  It is very quiet.  Oh, sounds like you have been bitten and have the disease!

I've been shooting SA models for 13 years.  Woolie whispers and a 650 grain arrow make a pretty quiet and effective bow.

You better order 2 this time.  ;)

My PTFX is quiet with wooly whispers, limbsavers at the fades, the right brace height (8 5/8" for me).  I have found that the whispers at .25% down from the top and .25% up from the botton work the best for me.

I don't clam to be a BW expert I have only owned a few but my last BW a PSA-X shoot like a dream accuracy wise and the draw was so smooth it felt 5-10lbs lighter than it was. On noise I tossed that factory string in the trash and went to 8 strand D-97 and 10 strand 8125 thin strings with wool puffs cut the noise way down and picked up about 6 FPS through my Chrony. Now I say its average for a recurve and never had any issues this past year with deer, hogs, turkey jumping string. I sold my PSA-X yesterday mainly for one reason that being I ordered a BW 54" PCH-X the new short 3 piece takedown recurve BW has coming out this year. I am just a 54" bow kind of guy 75% of my bows are that length. I will say I think that BW PSA I just sold was the hardest bow for me to sell the last few years it just shot so good it was hard packing it up last night to mail off this morning.

I am with 'Steel' on the PCH.  If you like shorter bows, but longer limbs, this could be a good combo for you.
I just ordered a 58".  That way I have the same length limbs as my 60" bows.  The riser is just 2" shorter, and the sight window is 1" shorter.
Can't tell you how or if this will affect the noise, but I will let you know in about 10 weeks.

String Cutter nice thread -- I have had two take down MA models they shot excellent & yes a little loud. Have a PSA take down on the way and thanks to this thread I will have even more things to try to quiet it down. Thanks again Jerry.

I just spent the better part of this fall hunting with the new PCH "X" 56". See "Back to back in West Texas" Highlights 2009 and there's a hog or two that didn't make it in the photos. You will not find a short bow with better manners period! The PCH is slimmer in profile, lighter in hand, smooth to 29+" very stable everything the bigger Widows are in a very compact hunting recurve. The boys in Nixa are about to get very busy filling orders for PCH's.

Like MRD said. Skinny string, though I dont know the strand count on mine I am sure it is more than 6. Use the spider silencers placed closer to the limb tips than you think they should be. And a little heavy on the arrows. My PSAV is as quite as any recurve I have ever shot.

Has anyone tried the "low grip" on a PSA??? OMG!! I'm doin it again... I just know I will order another??? Maybe I should just get on the list for one of those pretty Blacktails?? Atleast I would have to slow down to 15 months between bows??  :knothead:

A sickness to some I suppose.  Me, I think of it as a love affair since I've been shooting the same MA II for 20 years.

For my behalf I can say, that only cure to a widow bite is to have a BW bow. My MA III is as quied as any with correct brace height and 4 spider silencers. Dont fight it, do get one and have peace to your soul  ;)

I asked Roger about a PTL X.....Precision Takedown Longbow with 10 inch "PSA" riser and longbow limbs.

He said that would be a "whole new ball game".

I would be first to order the new...

I hated mine (PSA) because it was to loud until i played around with the brace hight  , now it is so quiet ,it only makes a whisper as the Arrow leaves the String

I also have mine really quiet, a combo of felt on the string grooves, wax on the riser where the limbs bolt on, and a couple cat wiskers, get the brace right like any other bow.. i dont shoot very heavy arrows 580 gr 60lb bow and its plenty quiet.. Thomas I know you bought one from me they are addicting arent they? I have another PSA coming in a couple weeks...
